Surnames: May, Treadway, Kite Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/an/mYSBAEB/238.1.1 Message Board Post: The information that I have is Eliza May (her maiden name) Treadway married Jeptha Kite sometime after the Civil War. Eliza had 2 sons (James Abraham and Benjamin Franklin Treadway) and she and Jeptha had 2 sons (Richard, born 1869 and Jeptha, born 1870). Jeptha Sr. died sometime after 1870. In the later part of the 1880's the four brothers (James, Benjamin, Jeptha and Richard), and I am assuming that Eliza also, went to New Mexico and Arizona to round up horses and they brought them back to Oklahoma for the Land Rush in 1889. They are recorded in New Mexico. Eliza filed for Civil War Pension on Jeptha Kite in 1888 in New Mexico (I don't know exactly where she was at the time). I do know that Jeptha Sr. was in the 1st Arkansas Calvary for the Union side. I also show that he was in Jefferson Co., MO in 1850 and 1870 and he was in Crawford Co., AR in 1860. Eliza May was widowed in 1862 and her husband (Benjamin Franklin Treadway) was buried in Sabastian Co., AR. I am a! ssuming that she met Jeptha in Arkansas and they moved to Missouri (Eliza was born in Newton Co., MO). So I figure that they both had family in MO. After the Oklahoma Land Rush the Treadway and Kite boys, with their mother, went back to Missouri. Eliza died in 1894 and is buried at Springfield, MO. James Treadway moved to Perry, Oklahoma and Benjamin Franklin moved to Clinton, Oklahoma. I don't know whatever happened to Jeptha and Richard. I have not been able to find out anything about them after 1889. If you find out more or have more than I have let me know. [email protected]
I show a Jeptha Kite in the 1860 Van Buren Twp., Crawford Co., Arkansas Census, pg. 642, Dwelling 318, as living with Charles C. Dunfield and wife Elizabeth. Jeptha Kite was listed as 25, b: MO, Laborer. Hope this helps some. I am still trying to locate anyone whose great grandparents were Charles Quillen Treadway & Mariah Embree (White) Treadway from Washington County, Tennessee. My paternal grandmother was Virgie Isabella (Treadway) Dent. As she was a native of Tennessee but after her marriage to my grandfather, Alvin Weldie Dent, she moved to Columbia County, Pennsylvania (near Bloomsburg). I knew literally nothing of her family and was very surprised a couple years ago when I discovered she had many brothers. I only heard her speak of her brother, Uncle Kirk. I believe his right name was David Kirkpatrick Treadway. He worked in Youngstown, Ohio in a car factory. He never married. There was one other sister, Lula Louise (Treadway) White who married a Horace White. She lived in Bristol, TN on Anderson Avenue. These are the only folks I ever heard about. In 1947 my father, Charles Henry Dent, Sr., packed up his family and his parents, Alvin and Virgie, and we spent a whole week in Bristol. At that time, we also took a trip to Jonesborough, Embreeville and Erwin to visit some folks my grandparents knew. There were about 8 boys in my grandmother's family so I know there must be descendants of this particular family. Please, if anyone reading this message is related will you please let me know. At the moment, I only know of 3 second-cousins who live in Bristol. I would dearly love to meet more of my cousins. Thank you for your help. I have the following notes on Nathaniel Treadway: I hope this helps. p607: "...a weaver...settled first in Sudbury, afterwards in Watertown, where he was Selectman, 1653,5,'64,66,69,70,72...his will dated 25 June 1687, mentions sons Jonathan, James and Josiah; children of daughter Hawkins; children of daughter Hayward, which she had by her first husband, Hapgood; sons-in-law Josiah Jones and Joseph Goddard..." (290) p11: "...was born in England about 1605...landed at MASS Bay around 1635, and after a brief residence in Watertown he settled in Sudbury, MA, where he was an original grantee of lands...the business pursuit of Nathaniel Treadway was that of a weaver, and his home was located upon a small acreage approximately in the center of Sudbury on the north side of North Street, facing south. His nearest neighbor on North Street to the east was John Stone, and that to the west was John Knight; to the north of the home was the home of Walter Haynes..." (290) p19: "...was active in the business affairs and local government of his community: a Selctman of Watertown, 1653, 55, 64, 66, 69, 70 and 1672...together with his wife's relatives, John haynes, Josiah Haynes and Thomas Noyce, the latter three all being of Sudbury, purchased a tract of 3,200 acres of land east of Quinsigamond Pond in 1664, which eventually resulted in the settlement of Worcester [MA]..." "Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908, Part I : The Ancestry of Warren Francis Kempton" by Dean Crawford Smith, edited by Melinde Lutz Sanborn has new information on Nathaniel Treadway. He was born ~1615 in England the son of Nathaniel Treadway and Mary Howe, who were married at St. Botolphe, Colchester, Essex, England 21 Sept. 1614. Mary Howe was baptized at Boxted, Essex., Eng. 23 Jan.1591/2 daughter of Edward and Ann (Lumpkin) Howe. Mary was the sister of Edward Howe of Mass. Edward and his wife Margaret both left part of their estates to Nathaniel Treadway, which led some to jump to the conclusion that his wife must be a Howe, but Sufferana Treadway was Sufferana/Sufferance Haynes the daughter of Walter Haynes and probably his wife Elizabeth who came with her parents from Sutton, Mandeville, Wilts Co., Eng. See "Walter Haynes and His Descendants" by Francis Haynes, 1929 NEHGR July, 1885 p. 263 NEHGR July, 1911 p. 295 for more info on Haynes. Nathaniel was granted land at Lake Quinsigamond in the year 1664 with John and Josiah Haynes, brothers to Sufferance Treadway. Walter and Elizabeth Haynes, came to this country from Sutton Mandifield, Wilts, Eng., with their children in 1638. Will of Nathaniel Treadway Admitted to Probate: 01 Oct 1689.
