Now I can transfer some of my energy over to finding Benjamin Franklin Treadway (1st husband of Eliza May Treadway Kite). I feel comfortable, now, that I have been compiling the CORRECT Jeptha Kite to my extended family lines for Eliza May. I really appreciate your input. Have you determined whether or not the first two sons -- listed as James KITE and Frank KITE -- in Eliza KITE's 1870 Barry Co MO census enumeration -- are actually KITE's? They appear to be the same sons as: JAMES ABRAHAM TREADWAY (1860 AR) & WILLIAM FRANKLIN TREADWAY (1862 AR) -- which belong to Benjamin Franklin Treadway & Eliza A. May Treadway. Eliza's second two sons -- RICHARD KITE (1868 MO) & JEFFERSON KITE (1869 MO) --appear to be the sons of Jeptha (Jr) Kite & Eliza A. May Treadway Kite. If these are the "missing Treadway children" of B. F. & Eliza it would certainly help this Treadway researcher in her quest to find these folks, as adults. Again, Becky, thanks for sharing with me. It makes the hunt less confusing. I am still checking for the progenitor, Jeptha Kite, in England. He must have left footprints there...after all, he was already, at least, 40 years old when he came to America. [It looks as if Jeptha (Eng) came to America with the express intention of meeting/living with family members who had already established themselves in Arkansas. I'm weeding my way thru the 1840 census records to see if I can place him in the enumeration under another named head-of-household.] I'll keep posting what I can find. CJ

You have shed new light on the Treadway's, thanks. The only error that I can see in your message dated 26 Jul 2004 is the listing of lineage from Jeptha Kite/Susannah: ii. Jeptha Kite (c1833 AR/MO or NM?) m Eliza A (May) Treadway, widow iii. James Abraham Treadway (not Kite) Eliza had two sons when she married Jeptha Kite, James Abraham Treadway, born 22 April 1861 (MO?) and died 04 April 1930 in Perry, Oklahoma. He married Mary Elizabeth Milliron on 10 February 1882. They had 10 children. The second son, Benjamin Franklin Treadway, born 1863 (he was born after his father, Benjamin Franklin, was killed in 1863 during the Civil War). The younger Benjamin Franklin Treadway was my husband's grandfather. He married Elizabeth Rowena Biggs (before 1902) and they settled in Clinton, Oklahoma where he died in 1937. Eliza May Treadway Kite had two sons with Jeptha Kite: Richard Kite born 1869 and Jeptha Kite born 1870. The 4 brothers, James, Ben, Richard and Jeptha were in Neosho, MO. They went to New Mexico and Arizona and drove cattle and horses to Kansas City and sold them to people going to Oklahoma in the Land Run of 1889. I believe that in 1888, Jeptha Kite had died and Eliza went with her sons to NM and back to MO. I have been told that she is buried in Springfield, MO but have been unable to locate cemetery. If you find in other information please pass it on. You and Becky have been very helpful. Pat

I am, actually, a TREADWAY researcher but the Kite's and May's criss-cross thru my Tennessee line with some frequency. I have found, whom I believe to be this KITE proginator, in the form of JEPTHA KITE (born circa 1787-1792 in England). He arrived in America in 1832 at the Port of New York. His given age on the manifest was 40. He was travelling with his wife, Susannah, age 32 (born England), and children, Sarah age 11, son Richard age 9, daughter Susannah age 6, daughter Mary age 4, daughter Harriet age 1 (all born in England). This is the same Jeptha & "Susan" in the 1850 Arkansas census. Richard, the son, is grown and living in a neighboring (Barry) Arkansas county with his wife and three children. I'll put on more as I find it. Claudia

His father, also a JEPTHA (1) KITE, was born in England. Jeptha's (2) mother was born in England. Jeptha (2) was the third child & first son of this union. The first two children, both daughters, were born in England. The eldest sister of Jeptha (2) married a BELL. The 1870 census records show your Jeptha (2) Kite was married to an Eliza A. -- they are in the New Mexico Territory census enumeration -- see JOSEPH (sic) KITE entry. Other messages in this thread, connecting the Kite (Jeptha) family with the May (Eliza) family -- and -- the May (Eliza) family to the Treadaway (sic) family shows a distinct connection, also, to the East Tennessee families of the KITE's, MAY's and TREADWAY's. I.E.: The KITE family was in the Embreeville, (now) Carter Co TN region [old Greene Co TN & Washington Co NC, before TN statehood]. This KITE family was connected to the TREADWAY family by the following link: Robert Treadway/Tredaway (1762 MD/1835 TN) m Nancy Lynch (c 1762 now, Bedford Co VA/1845 Carter Co TN) -- one of their daughters, Martha "Patsey" Treadway, married Harmon Davenport. Harmon & "Patsey" Davenport's daughter married Samuel KITE. The same Robert Treadway/Tredaway (1762/1835) & Nancy Lynch (1762/1845) had a son named Robert (2) Treadway who married Artymacy May Bayless. Artymacy "Arty" May Bayless was born 27 October 1805 in TN, a daughter of Daniel Lake Bayless (18 Apr 1779/14 Feb 1867 TN) married 05 Mar 1803 TN, Mary MAY (18 Jul 1779/-). Robert (2) Treadway & Artymacy May Bayless had a son named John A. TREADWAY who married 01 Apr 1852 TN, Mary Anna MAY (b 06 Jan 1833 TN), a daughter of Samuel MAY (b 26 Aug 1797/12 Mar 1842) & Mary MILLION (27 Mar 1799/24 Feb 1863), a daughter of Jacob Million. [Samuel MAY (1797) was the uncle of Artymacy May Bayless.] [Artymacy May Bayless Treadway, and her daughter-in-law, Mary Anna May Treadway, were second cousins.] Add to this mix the B. MAY in Arkansas census data, with his wife, Margaret -- and you come back to Tennessee again. The MAY family proginator is one, Casimore (sic) MAY, who died in East Tennessee on 31 May 1836 and was married to Mary HORNE (d 18 Feb 1832). He had brothers who came to America with him: John, Reuben, Samuel & George. These MAY brothers had sons who bore names such as: John, David, Samuel, Barnabus (Barnes) m Margaret Ruble, Casimore (sic), Jacob, William, Isaac, Martin, George, James, Edward. These descendants migrated to different areas of America -- including Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. If any of this is helpful to the TREADWAY -- MAY -- KITE researchers I have a little bit more information on these families. Feel free to contact me.

In my database I have many men named BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TREADWAY/TREDAWAY/TREDWAY/TREDAWAY (the surname spelling varies from record to record). This particular Benjamin Franklin Treadaway (b c 1854 Arkansas), and his brother, William J. Tredaway (b c 1857 Arkansas), appear to be the children of JOHN W. TREADAWAY (b c 1837 GA) and MARY E. [last not known]. See the 1850 Arkansas census record, Concord, Green County. By the 1860 Big Creek, Green County, Arkansas census these two boys (ages 14 and 11, respectively), are shown as orphans, and are living in the home of their paternal grandparents: John C. and Rebecca Treadaway. John C. Treadaway (b c 1812 SC) is the son of Richard Treadway and Nancy Smith of SC. John grew to manhood in SC -- then travelled to Tennessee, where he lived for nearly 10 years -- he then went into Georgia, and from there migrated to Arkansas. Richard Treadway (et. al.) of SC, father of John C., is descended from the Cumberland Co NC Treadway clan which belongs to Richard Treadway (b 1706 MD/d 1777 NC, will), who migrated to Virginia before settling in Cumberland Co NC circa 1752. Richard Treadway (1706/1777) is the son of Richard Treadway (b c 1677 unk/d 1720 MD) and Mary Jane Parker Smith. [Richard Treadway (1677/1720) lineage unproved -- may be the son of Josiah Treadway of MA & Sarah Sweetman; Josiah of MA a son of Nathaniel Treadway (b c 1605 England/d MA) and Sufferany HOWE, a daughter of the church elder, Edward Howe (Eng/MA).] *This Benjamin Franklin Treadway (Treadaway) (b 1820 VA) married Nancy Elizabeth Allen [daughter of John Allen & Esther Neel] is the son of the unwed, Nancy Elizabeth Treadway. This Benjamin was born in, and lived in, Scott Co VA. His only sibling was Nancy Elizabeth Treadway (b 1825 VA/d 1853 VA), married Hiram S. Cocke, and had one son, Benjamin Franklin Cocke (b 1853 VA/d 1853 VA). Following her death, Hiram remarried and migrated to Kentucky. This Benjamin Franklin Treadway, also, migrated to Kentucky in his later years. [Nancy Elizabeth Treadway, Benjamin's mother, died of cancer in Scott Co VA in 1855 -- see that counties' death records.] ** Benjamin Franklin Treadway (b c 1824, Sullivan Co TN/d c 1910 Carter Co TN -- TN death records, Carter Co TN obit), was a farmer. This Benjamin Franklin was the son of John A. Treadway (b c 1785, then NC, now Sullivan Co TN), a son of Robert Treadway (b 1762 MD/1835 Sullivan Co TN) &, Quaker, Nancy Lynch (b c 1762, now Bedford Co VA/d 1845 Carter Co TN) and Onijah Holt (b c 1795 TN/1881 Carter Co TN), daughter of Henry Holt. This Benjamin Franklin married M. Evalina Shawley, daughter of James Shawley & Rebecca Head. [See court and census records of Sullivan, Carter & Washington counties in Tennessee.] [Onijah -- Benjamin Franklin's mother, was a widow by the 1850 TN census -- sometimes she is listed as the head of household, but in some census records she will be listed under other household heads: ie, her son, Robert Treadway.] Hope some of this unravels the confusion of the Benjamin's.

(b c 1867) Andre/Andrew Treadaway is a son of a Henry Treadway/Treadaway who migrated to Louisiana from the New Jersey Treadway clan; some of whom also went into the Ohio frontier. Check for ship departures/arrivals from New Jersey to the Port of Orleans in the late 1700's for this Treadway migration. [The progenitor, Henry Tredway/Treadway (aka Tredwell), lived in Virginia when he married. Shortly thereafter he migrated to New Jersey --from there his family began the migration to Ohio and Louisiana --- some of the Louisiana clan went northward into the Missouri area (watch out for a Treadway surname mutation). These Treadway's came to New Orleans in the late 1700's and lived on the large rice and sugar cane plantations. They were intermarried with families of Spanish, Cajun and French heritage. [The surname is, at times, spelled with the 'French flair' and inflection.] Happy hunting! cj
