    1. [TRAUGOTT] traugott "or how a name changes!"
    2. ... valentine53179
    3. Subject: traugott from: RootsWeb Review, 16 April 2003, Vol. 6, No. 16 Putting Our Ears On I have an interesting family by any definition of the term, but one ancestor in particular has been a headache for decades. My 2g- grandfather was the actual immigrant. In Germany he was named Johann Christlieb DIETZMANN, but in America he became John C. DIETZMAN. Being well-to-do, by the standards of the day, he was able to bring his family along, including my great-grandfather, who was born in Germany. For reasons known only to my ancestors, (perhaps a streak of insanity in the line?) they gave him "the name from hell." He was born Traugott Glaubagott Fuchtegott DIETZMAN. He is most often found as "Trouket" DIETZMAN, sometimes changed to "Trucott." In one U.S. census he is listed as "Henry" and in another as "Frank" (best readings) but the uncommon names of his wife and children allow us to trace him, anyway. But on the death certificate of his youngest child (by his first wife) the decedent's father's name is given as "Crockett" DIETZMAN. Some people have further incorrectly extrapolated the name and list him, based on this wrong datum, as David Crockett DIETZMAN. Whatever was "going around" at the time of his birth, he wasn't totally alone. His mother's maiden name was OBENAUF, and in his generation there was also a Traugott Glaubagott Fuchtegott OBENAUF to keep him company. The ultimate advice is, don't even accept so-called PRIMARY sources at face value. --W. Dale Dietzman [email protected] [Editor's Note. Even original primary sources can contain errors. On the death certificate cited, the date of death is probably accurate, but the rest of the information on that document is only as accurate as the person's knowledge who provided it, and it is most likely secondary at best. The name of the father of the decedent might have been accurate originally, but was transcribed incorrectly on the death certificate form. Researchers should not worry about name spellings and learn to "hear" names. See this excellent article on the subject: "Do You Ear what I Ear?" by Michael John Neill: http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews/07_27_99.htm?rc=locale%7E&us=0#3

    2. Traugott
    3. The name Traugott does indeed translate to "Trust in God". It is part of an old German proverb that says "Trust in God and fear no man". It can be traced, I understand, to a very specific region, even a single town in Germany. I had a German teacher that pointed it out to me when I was child but I do not know what town it is now, perhaps 45 years later. 3. My grandparents came to Canada in 1929 from Poland (Edward and Eugenia). My Dad (Erich) was 9 months old. They were forced to Western Canada for two years (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) then returned to Kitchener, Ontario where they lived until their deaths in 1981 (Eugenia) and 1987(?) (Edward). They were both born in 1900. My Dad had two brothers, Arthur and Walter (1930 and 1932 I think). They are all still alive. I am an only Child. Arthur had two girls, Joanne and Wendy. Walter had a boy and a girl (Edward and Sherene (?)). I have three children Jenna, Katie and Ben. There are more 4th generation children but I'd have to ask for names as we don't see cousins too often. I know my Dad has a fairly large family tree that was put together by a cousin of his that lived in Montreal. I met her once but I should get a copy from my Dad. It may be of more interest than what I know off the top of my head. Kenneth Traugott moved to Oshkosh and died in 1948. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh. Leonard Traugott also moved to Oshkosh and died in 1922. He was married to Ida Bertha Fietzer (she is buried in the Little Creek cemetery, Symco - Waupaca County) I don't, however, have any information as to where Leonard is buried.
