With the caveats that Israel and Elizabeth have mentioned, my initial hypothesis would probably be that her maiden name may have been Hockett.  Assuming I had evidence that Jabez' surname was VanDoren, not Smith VanDoren, I would investigate whether Margaret had previously married a Mr. Smith.
