    3. Is this the right way to reply? I agree with everything that was said about using original sources, but want to mention that I have run across documents from the 17th century in which the letter "u" was consistently transcribed with a "v". The word unto was spelled vnto, for example. Does anyone know whether this was just something that was done with transcriptions or whether the same convention was used in any original documents at the time? Pam Vestal

    3. The book Reading Early American Handwriting by Kip Sperry gives lots of examples of letters that are used interchangeably as well as a lot of other useful things.
