Hi Kathie! It means that MyHeritage or geni.com can trace a connection between X and Y by counting one or more marriages as links. In other words, X and Y do not have common ancestry. For example, I have 24 links between me and A. J. Jacobs, the Global Family Reunion guy. Three of those links are marriages. Link #8 crosses out of my blood relatives into another tree, and so on.
