Teresa, I am not as versed in accounting as you. However it does strike me that whenever you buy a document, DNA testing, or anything on behalf of the client, wouldn't you bill that client for the same and it is a wash? Congrats on making a profit for your time. Where do you include the cost of obtaining certified records or DAR record copies or the cost of DNA testing you paid for on behalf of the client? Thank you for any advice you can give, Teresa S. Hello Elissa and Dee, Thanks for the speedy responses. I included the amount of the client check that reimburses me for expenses as part of INCOME, so I need to deduct it somewhere. Thanks Dee for the pointer. My profits would barely buy us all lunch at Mickey D’s, but I am still thrilled about it. Can anyone take a stab at my other two questions? How do you deduct books? Computer software? (179 deductions? Depreciation?) And what professional code do you use? Teresa S. These two links for NAICS codes for genealogical services: http://siccode.com/en/naicscodes/812990/all-other-personal-services-1 http://siccode.com/en/siccodes/7299/miscellaneous-personal-services-not-elsewhere-classified My accountant says we show both the income and the expense, even if they negate one another. Books are deducted as educational and software the accountant does his thing to write off full amount for the year. I think IRS is more reasonable now on writing off smaller expenses. d > On March 6, 2017 at 1:36 PM Teresa Kahle <teresa@theintrepidsleuth.com> wrote: > > > Hello Elissa and Dee, > > Thanks for the speedy responses. My record keeping system labels records as "client research documents" under expenses. They are then charged out to the customer in a dollar-for-dollar reimbursement. Dee > 4.
