Those letters look like USM, which means nothing. Probably a messed-up N, so it would be USN, that is, the Navy. However, as a "post-Coastie" (I was in the Coast Guard), I cannot fail to remind everyone that the rate of "fireman" is also found in the Coast Guard. It is one of the two lowest enlisted rates, both of them being classified as E-1. The other is seaman. A fireman is one who has decided to go for a rate which involves combustion or the like in its duties, such as a damage controlman (they are the firefighters of the sea services) or something to do with the engines and that sort of thing. A seaman strikes for rates such as boatswain's mate or, in the Coast Guard, port securityman. And that's probably more than you wanted to know.
