A subject whom I am researching was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Santa Monica, CA, in the BPOE section of the cemetery. His tombstone has his name, dates, and is headed with the letters "B.P.O.E 1" He was interred 3 April 1938 and was born in 1864. Does anyone know the significance of "1". Thank you to all who replied to this question. Yes, it does refer to his membership in the BPOE lodge in NYC which is number 1. An obituary listing confirmed this fact, and provided for me some indirect evidence of his residence in NYC before his move to Santa Monica.
