Amy, I am unsure if my earlier post arrived safely or not. I am currently giving away a 2012 version of FTM. I mistakenly bought the Windows version instead of MAC. I thought it would be a great drive for my blog and decided instead of a refund to conduct a giveaway. Would someone who has a subscription to the international/worldwide Ancestry.com please look up the marriage of George Lowrie and Janet Cowan. It is listed as being recorded in Midlothian (Edinburgh) Scotland extracted parish records. The marriage took place between 1798 and 1802. If there is a FHL film number attached, please let me know what it is. This couple is my gr gr gr grandparents. Nancy Lowrie Wright
Nancy, Try searching the FamilySearch catalog for the "Register of marriages of the city of Edinburgh, 1751-1800" which appears to be the item cited by Tony P. below. It's available on FamilySearch -scanned! It is 800 pages so it takes a while to load. Janet and George appear on p. 159. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to have much more information than what Tony P. gave you. Try this link - you may need Internet Explorer and may need to allow the file to load: https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE518282 You could also try searching "Edinburgh marriage registers" in the catalog which may have some more leads. You should be able to find all the film numbers also if you still need them. Let me know if any of this helps or you have any questions. And it may be that she just decided to use another name. My great-grandmother's name was Amanda Sarah Jane, but I have not seen that on any paper work from 1900 and after for her. For awhile she used "Desa," and then went to "Dulcie." The grandson of her oldest child said that his grandfather was supposedly named "Vivian" (yes, on the spelling for a male child) because he was "full of life." Since "Dulcie" means sweet in Latin, I figured she must have been on a Latin kick. And despite disagreement on the list about Lurancy being a form of Urania, I am convinced that they are the same person. Thanks everyone. I think that even though FTM 2010 will technically work on Windows 8 that it is really not compatible with it. I had based the Compatibility on https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/Home where Microsoft says it does work. Anyway the compact file fixed part of my problem temporary. Looks like I will have to get FTM 2012. Amy
Amy, FTM2010 will work on Windows 8, as it does with Windows 7. I think you will find that the Compact File will help you in the future IF you experience this problem again. I'm new here, and swore to myself I would listen longer before I dove in. But I just had to. I find land records so valuable! And websites are not great sources, but they can be incredible finding aids. First, a lot of big cities do have indices searchable by grantor/grantee. Just indirectly, usually through the county. When you head to the repository for originals, their indexing systems may be entirely different, but more information is available before you go there. You have to head for the government websites, and all are a little different. Detroit records, including recent ones, are searchable by name through the Wayne County Recorder of Deeds site. This then provides the liber and page number, the reception dates, entry dates, etc, for individual deeds. So are Chicago's through the Cook County Recorder of Deeds site (click 'search criteria'). That provides the 'pin number' to access the the history of the property and related documents as it changed hands. Lake Co IL also seems to have a friendlier and searchable site, but they wanted $5 for one day access. I wasn't willing to pay just to see what they did there.... For older land research, I have found the glorecords.blm.gov site invaluable! It is limited in that it only covers the original grantee/warrant/patent, and does not include the original colonies, or states directly derived from them. Different surveying scheme. But most of the country is included. Searches by name. And by then searching by township, range, section, etc, you can then 'map' the surrounding owners of your ancestor's property. I have found so many cousins, in-laws, old neighbors that moved to the same area.... ... Wasn't intended to be, originally, but this seems to be related to the "digging in anyway" part of Sarah's note. I can't help myself ... I must respond to this. As someone who has used Apple computers for 20+ years, I find that these kinds of issues rarely – and I really mean rarely – come up when I upgrade from one Mac computer to another. Or even when I upgrade operating systems. I don't know how you fix the problems you are having with Windows, but I urge anyone who needs to upgrade to consider getting a Mac instead. FTM finally has created software for Macs, so you should be able to upgrade flawlessly from one platform to the other. (A few years ago, when I got my first MacBook Pro, I sent an email to FTM to find out how to get the Mac software. At the time, I was told that they had absolutely no plans to make the software available for Mac users. Apparently, they realized their mistake.) Yes, Macs ARE more expensive, but when you consider how often you have to get your PC "debugged" and replaced because of viruses and other malware, and how much you spend on so-called "anti-virus" software – in the long run, you will actually spend less money. I got my husband to get an iMac when his Hewlitt-Packard computer started acting up. He was hesitant, because there is a bit of a learning curve as the system is a bit different. But Macs are really more intuitive -- it doesn't take long to learn how to use them. It's been 4 years; his iMac runs as fast now as it did when we bought it, and he's never had to take it in to have it repaired or virus-scanned. He's not anything near being a computer whiz, but he's convinced and will never go back to a PC. Just so you know, while I SHOULD be getting some kind of commission from Apple (I've sent many people over to "the other side"), I don't. I just really believe in the product. Mary The Kentucky Secretary of State office has most, if not all, of the KY and pre-KY Virginia records: http://www.sos.ky.gov/land/ To do metes and bounds, I use multiple programs, depending on my needs. The first is Deed Mapper from Direct Line http://directlinesoftware.com/ . This is essentially a drafting program you install on your computer, where you can enter plats and place them on various topo or other maps. There is good support via a mail-list. By the way, the new version works on Win7 - 64. Others are "Deed Platter" http://www.genealogytools.net/deeds/ and http://www.tractplotter.com/ http://map-pass.mytopo.com/index.asp is a subscription service that allows you place plats on modern day maps easily. I was able to plat several neighboring plats easily, in some hilly country. Both Deed Mapper and Map-Pass have fees attached. One particularly nice thing about Deed Mapper is that many people have uploaded their compilations of maps to the website, especially for Virginia and some for Kentucky, which is very helpful. Saves time if "yours" are already platted. Hope you enjoy this foray into mapping! Amy I hear your pain. Can you clarify whether these issues started immediately after you installed FTM 2010 on your new Windows 8 computer? It sounds to me like the ftm data file has been corrupted. Have you tried opening a backup file or an earlier version of your data file, that was created before upgrading your computer? Are the issues still present? If you haven't got backups, I sympathise and I'll plug my ears while you scream. Sometimes a file can be repaired by running 'Compact file' on the 'Tools' menu.
