    1. [TGF] Preemptive Land Patent
    2. Bethany Waterbury
    3. I am working with a land patent through the BLM that is labeled both on the original patent and in the county deed books as a "Preemption Certificate." I did a bit of research and it looks as though a preemption certificate was issued to someone who was already living on the land they wished to purchase (or a "squatter"). Does anyone know approximately how long someone would have to be living on the land to have a preemption certificate issued? The land patent I am working with is in Kent County, Michigan with the purchase date of 1839 and the patent issuance date of 1841. Thank you! Bethany Waterbury

    3. Michele, I do not consider county creation dates as common knowledge. I live in Tarrant County, Texas, but I would have to look up the date is was formed. You state that the dates are easily found, however, when I cite the information I reference the actual statute the state/parish/commonwealth created it---not a derivative source of that information. 3. Kassie Nelson, I would love to participate in a survey and yes I was born in the late 70's. I wonder if there was any difference between those who were unable visit their grandparents often compared to those who could. Most likely in Vols 209-211 which covered SOs 1-310 dated 2 Jan 1864 to 31 Dec 1864. 1. Re: [TGF] question about a Civil War service record
    2. Hi Maggie - I believe the notation means that Lt. Jno D. Bryan, Lt., Co. E., 6th Regt., Kentucky Calvary, retired under Special Order 217 in 1864. The "S.O." notation generally refers to "Special Order" with a numeral following which indicates the sequential number of the Special Order in any given year. You'd want to look to see if there is a regimental book containing the Special Orders issued for the regiment in 1864. Special Orders were issued when there were personnel changes (among other reasons), and they were common practice. Janeth L. 2. M. A. Beldin
    3. Dear TGF Listers, Thank you so much for your responses to my query of Jan 30th, “When is a phrase copyrighted?”. Your responses were very enlightening. I realized I was beating myself up over something that was not a problem after all. First, thanks Philip. I now see I need to understand the difference between copyright and trademark. One more thing to learn! Elizabeth, Thanks for your insights. I am not a professional nor planning to be but strive only to attain the quality and attributes of a professional. I have been paid twice for an all-day lecture; otherwise, all of my presentations are done for my society or the local family history center. You also helped me understand what I am trying to present. I love your explanation of “The 5 Hottest Ideas in Genealogical Research....”; You gave me my “AHA” moment. That is precisely what I am doing! My presentation is, “How to Become a Better Genealogist” and I am sharing with my society what I am doing to better my research skills and helping them to learn along with me. (I began my January presentation with this opening: “My name is Margie and I am a name gatherer!”) I am following the suggestions found in Angela McGhie’s Adventures in Genealogy Education blog entry of Jun 6th: “Elizabeth Shown Mills Ten-point Study Blueprint”. This was my inspiration for my own learning and the basis for sharing with my society. Dee, your posts show how passionate you are about professional genealogy. My goal is to learn from all of you and incorporate what I am learning into my own research and then pass that experience along to my society members. I and not trying to steal anything from any of you but rather learning, using, digesting, incorporating and then sharing what I learn so others will also strive to higher standards in their genealogical research. Thomas, thanks for your input; you kept me from cancelling my next presentation because I didn’t think I was being “original” enough. Like you, I listen, read, watch tons of webinars, search out info online, in magazines, anywhere someone is presenting good methods and principles I am not familiar with. I then digest what has been presented, incorporate what I have learned into my own personal research, and, finally, share what I have learned with others. Learning is a process (as you all know) and teaching what I learn is the best way for me to really understand and incorporate these new ideas into my own work. Like you, “I let the work of others inspire me.” And lastly, Melissa, THANK YOU! I don’t know what an OP is, but I believe you are referring to me. I am the education chair for our small local society--abt 125 members with less than 40 attending general meetings. I introduced the position when I was president and then quickly accepted the chairmanship when my term ended. I love teaching; I want people to understand and practice good genealogical research principles. I have easily presented well over 100 talks; all of them original ideas based on my own experiences coupled with ideas gleaned as described above. This is the first presentation where I have used so many quotes from others. But, as explained above, it is because I am outlining the path I have laid for myself in my quest to be a better genealogist. If I can get just one person to start planning their research, recording their positive and negative search results, reading NGSQ or taking time to learn better methodology instead of finding just one more name, then I have done my job. Thanks to you all who are helping me become a better genealogist. And, because of you and my new goals, I am attending APG’s PMC next month. I can hardly wait! Margie in Washington State

    3. Connie, I am saving your message, and will try Multi-Row Toolbar and Xmarks. I did not download the Relatively Curious toolbar because I read the information about it and discovered that they will want to use "push" technology to put messages on my browser that I may not want to be bothered with. I just never have cared for the "push" idea. But with your arrangement, I'll be able to go quickly to the places I want to go on a regular basis, and may also employ your idea of replacing the blog reader with the toolbar. 3. Dave, I am so sorry to hear about the problems you had with the toolbar. I should have stated that I am using IE8 and there were several items (those pesky extras that always seem to come along with free downloads) that I had to skip or say no to (and I did not download anything other than the toolbar); I also told it not to change my home page. Luckily, I didn't encounter any freezes during the download process, so I guess I was lucky. I have been using the toolbar today and still find it useful for me, especially since my favorites list has gotten unruly. 3. I only have IE 9 installed.  I had no problems with the install, and my home page remained the same.  When installing you have to uncheck any options that you don't want - I unchecked them all.  "Clicking past" those options without deleting the checks basically tells the install to "go ahead" and install them. I don't know why your system froze; mine does that on a daily basis!   Cathy Champion     Fenton, MO 63026 (near St. Louis)   I feel compelled to share my experience!  Because of the difficulty with the installation, I figured it wasn't worth the grief.  I uninstalled Relatively Curious.  Upon re-opening the browser, my home page was changed.  WOW!  So, any ideas about "What have I done wrong???" ________________________________ From: Dave Robison dave@oldbones.co

    3. I'm sorry it didn't work for you! I know it works with IE but I haven't tried with any other browser. I think I recall that Linda said it wouldn't work with Chrome, but I thought she said it would work with other browsers. I am finding that I could spend all day and more just clicking on possible links that may take me to places I might not otherwise find. I just located some info on my Waggaman family in Missouri that I had not previously known about--and I haven't gotten past the free sites area yet; can't wait to get into the other areas. Below it said that in the meantime to try downloading with one of these browsers which included IE, Firefox, and Safari. So I went to Safari, and it told me that it wasn't quite ready to support Safari, and in the meantime to try downloading with one of these browsers: IE, Firefox, and Chrome. I downloaded the toolbar and I think it is going to be a time-saver for me. I thought I would share the info in case you want to check it out. It has categories for resources, free sites, subscription sites, in print, and connect and within each of those a listing of several choices that you can just click on to go immediately to that site. I think it works with most browsers. http://relativelycurious.ourtoolbar.com Constance T.
