    3. For immediate release 8 August 2016 BCG OFFERS FREE WEBINAR Tuesday, August 16, 8:00 p.m. EDT. *“Another Kind of Navigation: GPS for Genealogy” presented by Shellee Morehead, Ph.D., CG* The first to be presented under the new webinar partnership with Legacy, this lecture describes the five steps of the Genealogical Proof Standard to establish proof of identities and relationships. Shellee Morehead, CG, will present examples at each step, along with a case study of a complex problem that was solved with research, creativity, attention to detail and a defined process. See how reasonably exhaustive research, accurate citations, analysis and correlation of data, the resolution of conflicting data and a reasoned, written conclusion was used to identify the parents of a Civil War soldier who shaved 10 years off his age and complicated the search for this relationship. The Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) will present “Another Kind of Navigation: GPS for Genealogy,” a webinar by Shellee Morehead, Ph.D., CG, free to the public at 8:00 p.m. EDT, 16 August 2016. The recording of the webinar will be available for free from the 9th through the 22nd of August. After that the recording will be available with an annual or monthly membership to Legacy Family Tree Webinars. Shellee Morehead has a Ph.D. in evolutionary ecology and is an adjunct instructor of biology at New England Institute of Technology. She was certified by BCG in 2012, and researches, writes and lectures on family history. Her specialties include Rhode Island, Italian, and French-Canadian research and genetic genealogy. She is an active member of the Rhode Island Genealogical Society, American-French Genealogical Society, and the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) New England Chapter. She is currently serving as Treasurer for the Federation of Genealogical Societies. “We are pleased to offer this informative webinar as the first in our collaborative efforts with Legacy Family Tree Webinars,” said BCG president Jeanne Larzalere Bloom, CG. “The Board for Certification of Genealogists strives to foster public confidence in genealogy by promoting an attainable, uniform standard of competence and ethics. Partnering with Legacy, whose technical expertise in genealogy webinar production and management is second to none, will allow BCG to focus on its mission of promoting attainable, uniform standards of competence and ethics among genealogical practitioners.” Register for “Another Kind of Navigation: GPS for Genealogy,” a webinar by Shellee Morehead, Ph.D., CG, before 16 August 2016 at: http://familytreewebinars.com/webinar_details.php?webinar_id=477. 3. Hello Folks, Quick question. Are genealogists considered contractors in VA? In my county in VA contractors are required to have a business license, but according to a fellow professional Genealogist they really aren't considered contractors. I asked Rocketawyer this question and am awaiting their response but just wanted to get the opinions of other professional genealogists in VA. Thanks, David

    3. Very interesting and timely. I'm facing a similar situation. I took on a client who provided me with a nice write-up of what he had thus far. He provided no citations of where the information was extracted from, however.  He did fully acknowledge "not being very organized" and said he obtained "most of his information from Ancestry and newspaper clippings." I actually found most of the sources he used. However, as you know, it took some time. The brunt of what I was asked to do was research personal papers at a local research library, which I did. But that also took quite some time. It's frustrating because neither searches revealed the amuont of results I had hoped, for obvious reasons. I was wondering how I was going to write up the experience. I have been writing my report along the way (just like I was taught in my BU course! and by Elissa at IGHR!) so it won't be difficult. That said, your answer to Brandt does provide much appreciated further reinforcement that I'm on the right track. The best way to address it is during the negotiation phase with the client where the professional states any limitations and educates the client that some of the previous research will need to be verified. Some professionals even write this into their contracts so that when (not if) this occurs, the client is fully aware that it was a possibility. But you are past that stage. In your report under the background section you would state what was previously given to you. Under Limitations you may state something like research was conducted on the assumption that the background was correct but that deeper research revealed that the original hypothesis did not hold up to further scrutiny. Then in the Research Notes section show all the research that was conducted with the Conclusion or Summary section detailing what the new information means. No blame-- just the facts. You could go into the GPS which means that now that reasonably exhaustive research has been done and all discrepancies have been addressed, the conclusion is the best one to date. The client probably knows they did not conduct reasonably exhaustive research -- that's why they hired you! I wouldn't be nervous about it if you give your reasons for your conclusion and back them up with the facts. They may already know what they gave you was shaky. -- Elissa Elissa Scalise Powell, CG , CGL www.PowellGenealogy.com www.GRIPitt.org 25-30 June 2017 and 16-21 July 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA CG, CGL, and Certified Genealogical Lecturer are service marks of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by board certificants after periodic evaluations. 1. Re: [TGF] How do I explain my research?
    2. Brandt, you have received good advice. Our job is to be an impartial researcher, analyst, and reporter of the findings. This probably will not be your last case with this issue. It happens frequently in all kinds of genealogy cases, even legal. The Indian Princess, the Revolutionary War hero, the same name but wrong person ancestor, the first cousin who knows the decedent had no siblings so the first cousin must be the heir, the military record that shows a mother who was really a neighbor who took the kid in. Every circumstance one can imagine in genealogy research. This is the reason many people turn to professionals. Misinformation or their assumptions or incomplete/inaccurate research threw up a brick wall. d ---- Dee Dee King, Certified Genealogist Forensic Genealogy Services LLC and Contract Genealogist, US Navy Casualty, POW/MIA Branch Mail address - PO Box 1085, Manvel TX 77578 Telephone/fax 281-595-3090 www.forensicgenealogyservices.com www.facebook.com/forensicgenealogist CG is a service mark and Certified Genealogist is a registered certification mark of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by board certificants after periodic competency evaluations, and the board name is registered in the US Patent & Trademark Office.

    1. Re: [TGF] How do I explain my research?
    2. Barbara Mathews via
    3. I concur with Elissa. This is one of the places where the strength of the report model in Professional Genealogy shows. I had this experience with a client many years ago. She told me that a woman named Eliza was her great grandmother and she needed to find out when she married. I had three hours of research, but I found no evidence that Eliza married. I found her in the 1850 and 1860 censuses with her parents on their farm. I found no marriage record for her in town records. I found her buried under her maiden name with her parents. In the report, my research summary was that there was no evidence that she ever married. I referred the client to a genealogist that lived in that hometown. About three months later, that genealogist came walking across the library's reading room, waving my report in her hands. She said she couldn't believe how much I had accomplished in three hours. (Now you know how helpful that "limitations" section can be in a report!) She also told me that the client had a conversation with a great aunt who told her that Eliza's older sister Margaret was her great grandmother. Live and learn. But by using the ProGen report structure, I had a report that withstood scrutiny. The client paid and realized that she had to talk to more family members. Another professional genealogist didn't see that report as a failure, but as a success. God bless Elizabeth Shown Mills, is all I can say. Her report chapter rocks.
    2. This is a scenario every professional has, or may, encounter. Researchers looking for enslaved people almost always need to find research slaveowner(s) first. And, they need to see the enslaved people in context of the entire document. Not seeing the will(s) you have, I will assume there are no surnames for the enslaved people. However, there could be clusters, families (ie Mary and her four children) and descriptions (ie child, yellow, blacksmith) of the slaves. The will would also describe to whom the bondsmen were distributed before or after the death of the descendant. All of these are clues that help determine if the “Henry” in the will was the “Henry Brown” in an 1870 or later census or a male who is 10 in an earlier census. You’ve transcribed the will already. So, put the digitized transcription and images in the usual locations where you have your family records ie websites like ancestry or in the book you are writing. If your state or local archives or libraries have records of your family, add it and look at the indexing. Add includes slaves. Perhaps, publish it in your chapter newsletter. Connect with a local or state African American genealogical society <http://www.aahgs.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Page.ViewPage&pageId=542> in your geographic location. They will have ideas. Alot of this is locality driven. The researcher is looking for slaveowner{s) who will lead to the enslaved person or family. Many thanks for including and highlighting the enslaved people in your family records.
