    1. [TRANSCRIPTIONS-AUS] Cemeteries of South-West Victoria Website
    2. Ian Marr
    3. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - WE ARE MOVING One of the worst things that can happen to a web-site (especially a popular one, to which many people have linked or listed as a favourite) is for it to move to a new host service. This invariably means that at some point in time, all of the old links will cease to work. Unfortunately, this is exactly what we have had to do with the Cemeteries of South-West Victoria site. I apologise for the inconvenience and work that this will generate, but have no choice. The State Library of Victoria is in the process of closing down many community web-sites that it has hosted on its "vicnet" servers over the past several years. We have all benefited from the service they have provided and should thank them for that. Included below is the statement I received from SLV regarding the issue: "Over the last 12 months, the State Library of Victoria has undertaken a detailed review of our web hosting and email services. This is part of a broader process to re-align the SLV's services with the broader strategy of the library. As a result, the decision has been made to close our community web hosting, DNS management and email services (mailboxes) effective from Friday, January 31, 2014." However, all is not lost. I have just completed transferring the entire "vicnet" site to another provider, along with a new domain name. You will now find the Cemeteries of South-West Victoria site at: http://www.ianmarr.net.au/ This will look and operate exactly as it does on the "vicnet" server. E-Mail addresses HAVE NOT CHANGED. To those of you that have multiple links to the Cemeteries site, and can use "find & replace" on the source files - Do a global 'replace all' Find: home.vicnet.net.au/~marr or home.vicnet.net.au/marr (depending how you originally specified the site) Replace with: www.ianmarr.net.au This should correctly change the URL even if your link points to a specific folder or file within the "vicnet/~marr" site. I have contacted SLV asking if they will provide a redirection on the existing site, but have not received a response. I suspect that they are probably not prepared to provide this service. The "vicnet" site will no longer be updated, so I guess it will just die a natural death sometime around 31 January 2014. 1. [TRANSCRIPTIONS-AUS] A new non-commercial website - www.familynotices.org
    2. Nigel Penton Tilbury
    3. Posted with the kind permission of the Listowner. I have just launched www.familynotices.org which is a totally non-commercial & privately-owned site and I hope to attract postings from the past as well as new social events. Following the death of a close family member, I was surprised at the charges levied by the local newspaper made for posting just a small obituary. It made me think through the whole 'death notices' thing and I created FamilyNotices.org - which is an on-line repository for all notices of Births, Deaths, Marriages, Engagements, Anniversaries and Missing Persons. This has the advantage of being world-wide, free and doesn't get thrown away! Please feel free to help yourself and post anything which is relevant and appropriate - and it doesn't have to be current. Details of 'Auntie Millie born in 1896' is just as relevant as a modern-day wedding notice. If you like it, please tell your friends, for anyone is welcome to post good news or sad news. .........& if you don't, just tell me! Cheers for now, Nigel ______________________________________________ FamilyNotices.org - the free online repository for all notices of Births, Deaths, Marriages, Engagements, Anniversaries and Missing Persons Doing it for free - unlike the newspapers !
