    1. Posting (or re-posting) your reply messages...
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Some members of this mailing list, ask why their "reply message(s)" are NOT being posted on the Mailing List. Be assured that I do _NOT_ censor any messages and, if properly sent, they are ALL posted to both the List and Digest Modes. 1. Are you sending your message to the correct address, which is: TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com (Note, the word "request" is not used here... only when you want to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List). 2. Remember, if you use the "Reply" button of your e-mail program, your reply _only_ goes to the person you are replying to (the individual who originally posted the message)...and NOT the Mailing List. In which case, subscribers _don't_ (unfortunately) see your reply. Instead, you should use the "Reply All" button of your e-mail program in order for the TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com address to be added to your message. And then, if you only want your reply to be posted to the Mailing List, delete the e-mail address of the original poster. HOWEVER, be certain NOT to include a long list of other e-mail addresses. Bottom Line: Always make certain that the TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com address appears in the "To" line of your reply messages. 3. Another possibility: The TRAHAN Mailing List, is a "closed list" which, from your standpoint, merely means that you must use the same address with which you are subscribed to the Mailing List, in order to be able to have your message posted to the List. So, if you are subscribed under the e-mail address jsmith@msn.com but have a second e-mail address, you MUST use the address under which you are subscribed. As a matter of fact, if you attempt to send a message using jsmith@mail.msn.com your message will NOT be posted to the List. 4. Currently, the maximum size your message can be is 20K bytes...anything larger gets rejected by Rootsweb. So if necessary, reduced the size of your message by sending multiples...i.e Part 1 of 2, Part 2 of 2 etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------- A few other thoughts... a) When replying to a message, "quote" only a portion of the original sender's message...just enough for him/her to remember what the original inquiry was. Delete everything else from the original message (use cut and paste), including any signature and/or taglines. This is especially important when you are replying to a lengthy original message. Of course, if the initial message is very short, you can re-post it in its entirety... but please be certain to remove the "tagline" from same). And, if you are subscribed in the Digest Mode, PLEASE do not attach the complete multiple digest message to your reply...merely cut and paste a portion of the applicable message you are replying to, into your reply. b) Also, in instances where you are _re-posting_ another request for the SAME information, please add the word "REPOST" to the subject line? While I don't want to discourage anyone from re-posting queries (since there are new members joining the list, daily), I note that often the same message gets re-posted once (or even twice) the same week! By adding the word "REPOST" in the subject line, this would provide a quick indicator for those of us who read all messages, to just delete the re-posted message. c) If messages are "bounced-back" by your ISP as being a 'wrong address' (this can occur if your mailbox is full, for example), the Rootsweb software will automatically UNSUBSCRIBE you after a certain number of "bounce". So, if all of a sudden you stop receiving messages from the Mailing List, you should check with me AND your own ISP (Internet Service Provider), to determine why. Note: I usually try to send you sample of "bounced" message to assist you in discussing with your ISP however, if your mailbox is full, you obviously do not receive same! And finally... c) Remember, all messages which appear on the "L" (list) Mode, are also posted on the "D" (digest) Mode. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's TRAHAN Mailing List. 1. Chat Room for ACADIAN-CAJUN Cousins
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Every SUNDAY evenings starting at 7:00 PM (Eastern time), all Acadian-Cajun cousins are invited to meet in the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room located at: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html This is your opportunity to "TALK" with all your Acadian-Cajun friends and cousins. Won't you join in? PS: If this is your first time "at the party", you may want to arrive a bit early, in order to have the opportunity to check things and figure out how to enter the 'Chat room". PSS: As we all know, the Mailing List is primarily intended for genealogy-related discussions however, there are times when subscribers might want to discuss a subject matter not quite suitable for the Mailing List. Obviously the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room is an excellent medium for this purpose. While the regularly scheduled Sunday meeting (7:00 PM Eastern) is a _weekly_ happening for the subscribers of this TRAHAN Mailing List, keep in mind that anyone...at anytime...can meet to "talk" in the Chat Room. Just (privately) send each other an e-mail message and decide what date/time you want to meet. Then, at the pre-arranged time, click on the URL address: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html ...and follow instructions there, for your get-together. PSSS: You must have your Internet Browser (Netscape, Explorer etc.) java-enabled. If you are not certain how to do this, contact your Internet Service Provided for assistance. YVON L. 1. DON'T's and DO's for this Mailing List
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a short-list of "do's and don't's" which I will be posting here on a regular basis. Many thanks for your cooperation...and enjoy. -DO NOT send attachments (attached files of any sort...this includes v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files or any other type of attachment). These messages DO NOT get processed by the Rootsweb software, thus the reason it's not possible for VIRUS to be posted directly to the Mailing List. -DO NOT send copies of complete Digest Mode messages, when replying to a post. Cut and paste the applicable message in your reply, only. -DO NOT repeat the entire "initial" message in your reply. Include only that portion of the message which is necessary to remind everyone, what you are replying to. Delete everything else (including headers, signatures, taglines)...use "cut and paste". -DO NOT use "auto-reply software" since this will result in duplicate messages being posted on the Mailing List. You MUST disable any "auto-reply software" once subscribed to the List. -DO NOT forward virus warnings (most of which are hoaxes), chain letters, "test" messages...or jokes (even _Acadian-Cajun_ jokes)! -DO NOT use signature files wider than 70 characters or longer than 4-5 lines, OR with long lists of surnames you are researching. And please do NOT include any graphics or long list of URL addresses, in your signature. As a matter of fact, you are encouraged NOT to include any signature... just your name and e-mail address. -DO NOT use HTML (styled text) or RTF (rich text format) in your messages...plain text only, no MIME format. Turn off the "Post in HTML'' or "Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader and don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your own ISP's technical support line for help. -DO NOT cross-post messages to multiple Mailing Lists (or individuals) in the "To" or the "Cc" line of the e-mail. Use ONLY the ACADIAN-CAJUN-L@rootsweb.com address in the "To" field. -DO NOT post messages which are off-topic. This Mailing List is intended to be used PRIMARILY as an exchange medium, for ideas, information and specifics relating to Acadian-Cajun GENEALOGY and HISTORY. The Mailing List is most assuredly NOT the proper forum for discussing/posting Acadian-Cajun jokes, Acadian-Cajun recipes, Acadian-Cajun computer problems (and virus warnings), Acadian-Cajun medical problems, as well as "politically oriented views" vis-a- vis French, English etc etc (add your own list here). -DO NOT use all-capital letters when writing e-mail messages. Similarly, do not use ALL lower case...which makes the message more difficult to read. It only takes a moment to proof-read your message _before_ hitting the "send" button...do so. At the very minimum, use the spell check of your e-mail program. -DO NOT flame other members of the mailing list. I enjoy lively debates (especially when they're educational) as much as anyone...as long as your comments don't get "personal". ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -DO continue to participate actively. -DO encourage your Acadian-Cajun friends to join the Mailing List. -DO review the guidelines to using this Mailing List at... http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.html -DO enjoy yourself to the fullest. -DO be nice to one another. ------------------------------------------------------------ And finally, as a couple of _former_ subscribers could attest to, if you are contacted privately by me with a request to adhere to a specific guideline/policy, I expect you to likewise reply to me _privately_. This Mailing List is NOT the forum to discuss these matters. Thanks in advance for your anticipated cooperation. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's TRAHAN Mailing List. 2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- (If you haven't already done so), may I encourage EVERY subscriber to tell us a little bit about themselves by posting a BRIEF message to the Mailing List to tell everyone about their interest in genealogy, something along these lines... --------------------------------------------------------------- SAMPLE MESSAGE: "My name is Yvon Cyr and I am the Listowner of over two dozen Rootsweb Mailing Lists, including this one. I'm originally from Grand Falls, New Brunswick... right smack in what has become known as the Madawaska Territory where so much wonderful Acadian history has been written. I now live in Ontario, Canada. My late father was Robert CYR (born February 2, 1910); my deceased mother Annie OUELLETTE (born May 14, 1914) and I am married to Judy THERIAULT, the daughter of Eugene (born March 11, 1892) and Alice MICHAUD (born May 5, 1896) [the main four surnames I am researching]. I have over 110,000 (directly related) names in my personal data and have produced two Acadian-Cajun Genealogy CD's with over one million names combined (with complete pedigree). It don't get much more Acadian than that! <grin> I am the Webmaster of the Acadian Genealogy Homepage which may be viewed at URL address: http://www.acadian.org where details of my CD's are posted. I encourage Acadian-Cajun webmasters to add links to their own web site, by visiting http://www.acadian.org/hotlinks/ Working in conjunction with KH&A Printing Inc., I can now assist in providing beautiful family tree wall charts... as you've never seen before! For complete details, connect to http://www.acadian.org/charts.html -------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE 1: Please use your own SURNAME in the "Subject Heading" of your message. For example, an appropriate "Subject" for my message might have been... "CYR, Yvon; Introduction". This will ensure that the message is properly archived. Thanks. NOTE 2: Please do NOT include a _long_ list of surnames in your message. Include only the FOUR main surnames you are researching. NOTE 3: Don't send your message to ME. Post it directly to the Mailing List for all your cousins to see, by sending it to: TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com [For those who are posting to the List for the first time, please note that the word "request" is NOT included in the address and is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe to/from the Mailing List]. 1. Managing your subscription to the Mailing List
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- TO POST A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON THE MAILING LIST: Type your inquiry/response message and send it to... TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com Note that the word "request" is NOT included and is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the Mailing List. Your message will be sent to ALL subscribers of the Mailing List. Be certain to keep your "signature" short and sweet. As a matter of fact, your name and e-mail address is all that is required (and recommended). TWO VERSIONS TO CHOSE FROM: You are either subscribed to the "L" Mode (and receive a copy of each messages posted on the Mailing List, in individual messages), or the "D" (Digest) Mode (and receive copy of multiple messages, in a _single_ e-mail). Regardless of which Mode you are subscribed to, you receive a copy of ALL messages posted on the Mailing List. If you are subscribed to the "L" Mode and find you are receiving too many messages from the Mailing List, turn OFF your signature file and then, merely send an e-mail message to TRAHAN-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "L" Mode. Then, send a second message to TRAHAN-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word SUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will subscribe you to the Digest Mode. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE MAILING LIST: First, you must determine if you are subscribed under the "L" Mode (individual messages) or the "D" Mode (digest of multiple messages in a single e-mail). 1. To unsubscribe from the "L" Mode, turn OFF your signature file and then, send an e-mail message to TRAHAN-L-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "L" Mode. 2. To unsubscribe from the "D" (Digest) Mode, send an e-mail message to TRAHAN-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (only) in the body of your message. This action will cancel your subscription to the "D" Mode. Note: If you have more than one e-mail address, you MUST send your message from the address with which you are subscribed to the Mailing List. YVON L.
