    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- You may not be aware that all e-mail messages posted on this TRAHAN Mailing List since its inception, are being archived indefinitely by Rootsweb. Not only does this eliminate the trouble of you "saving" messages on your own computer, but it provides ready-access for any message you've previously seen here (or may have missed when you were away or temporarily unsubscribed from the List). There are two archives of the mailing list messages... 1. The first and most complete is the _interactive_ search at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This is an interface to the archives for most of the RootsWeb mailing lists, current through the past day or so. In the form provided, enter the name TRAHAN. You will then be provided a form in which to enter the surname (or whatever) that you are looking for. 2. The second archive is the _threaded_ archives and is located at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Here again, you merely enter the name of the Mailing List [TRAHAN] in the form provided and then click on "Submit Query". --------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. As you will see when you visit the above noted URL addresses, all archived messages can be viewed in "chronological" order, or in "thread" (by subject) order. The importance of using a brief but descriptive "subject" when you're posting messages (or replies) on the Mailing List, should be quite obvious. It is also important to also use the _original_ "subject" when replying to a message. This new service is provided for YOUR/OUR benefit... so let's all work together to make it successful. So, when posting a message to the Mailing List, please don't use a vague "subject heading" like...'Need Help'. Instead use a brief but descriptive "Subject" which best describes the content of your message. 2. If you are subscribed in the "Digest Mode", be certain to remove the Digest Reference Number in the "Subject" column, when replying to messages on the Mailing List, and replace same with a brief/descriptive "Subject" based on the content of your reply. 3. Another very important consideration, is that reply messages to initial inquiries should be posted to the Mailing List, rather than sent _privately_ to the originator. This is the only way all can see both the question... and the answer. Many thanks for your anticipated cooperation. YVON L. CYR, cajun@acadian.org Facilitator of Rootsweb's TRAHAN Mailing List. 1. Working on FIRST Names, starting with the letters A, B, C or D...
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- A subscriber to one of the other Mailing Lists which I Facilitate, has offered the following suggestions as a means of increasing the activity on the List: "Would it be possible to start a trend? Each week we concentrate on one (or more) letters of the alphabet for FIRST names of Trahan? We are getting a lot of input this way on another List and great discussions going. As an example, the first week we work on people whose first name begin with the letter A. There can be the usual e-mails covering all subjects concerning the Trahan lines but this might put some spark back into the list. Just a suggestion." I very much support this suggestion and encourage all subscribers to participate. So, to get the ball rolling, I'll chose a letter of the alphabet to work on for the current week (see the Subject Heading above), such as... 1st week: Post information (or ask about) any BERNARD names starting with "A" 2nd week: Post information (or ask about) any BERNARD names starting with "B" 3rd week: Post information (or ask about) any BERNARD names starting with "C" etc. etc. etc. PS1: Anyone on the List can chose an appropriate letter (A, B, C etc.) and keep the ball rolling. PS2: Don't send your messages to ME... send them directly to the List at: TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com PS3: This "idea" is NOT to discourage anyone from asking/posting any other genealogy-related information to the List... it is merely intended to be a catalyst to get subscribers to actively participate. Enjoy. PS4: Since all messages are archived by subject matter, I would suggest the following be used as a "Subject Heading"... Subject: TRAHAN first names starting with the letter A or Subject: TRAHAN first names starting with the letter B etc. etc. YVON L. 1. Re: B- Birgette/Brigitte Trahan look-up
    2. Marsha
    3. Hi, me again, Would someone please do a look-up for me when you have a moment? I am desperately trying to connect my Landry/Trahan line to my Acadian Gousman/Bonnevie line...which would connect to my Gusman family in St. Bernard in 1800 or so. Hope that statement makes sense to you...it gets sort of confusing. It's one of those lines where a Landry marries a Trahan and the next one marries a Landry and there are many Brigitte's to boot...just a little confusing... Anyhow, Birgitte/Brigida Trahan m Etienne Landry 2 May 1776 ASC-1,133, DBR Vol2,423. They had 5 children and Etienne died in 1787. What I need to verify is Birgitte/Brigida date of birth or baptism and/or a record of her (3rd) marriage to Jean Gusman whom she married? ca.1790. They resided in St. Bernard Parish and had one child that I know of, although I haven't been able to find a record of his baptism. If I can be of help anyone please let me know, you never know, we may be cousins up the line somewhere. Sincerely, Marsha

    1. Copyright considerations; please read carefully!
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- [IMPORTANT: Please be certain to read this message in its entirety]. Copyright issues are very complicated and while it is not my intent to discourage anyone from posting the excellent historical information which benefits all subscribers, it is very important that you be made aware of Rootsweb's policy relative copyright: 1. ROOTSWEB'S COMMON-SENSE ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY: Neither Rootsweb nor the Listowner (me) own the material posted on Mailing Lists. YOU OWN YOUR POSTS. When you post messages to this Mailing List, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain YOUR property under copyright law and as such, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that the material posted meets established copyright regulations. 2. ROOTSWEB MAY ARCHIVE AND REDISTRIBUTE: By posting to this Mailing List, you give RootsWeb a permanent license to archive and redistribute those posts, so as to provide current and future users access to your posts,. This policy may be superseded in specific circumstances by other commitments made by RootsWeb. 3. POST ONLY MATERIAL YOU OWN: When you post to RootsWeb, you must either be the copyright holder (that basically means you wrote it), have written permission from the copyright holder, or the material must clearly be in the public domain (which is very often the case). 4. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR POSTS: If you post anything that results in RootsWeb being sued, you are responsible for any costs you incur. They may also hold you responsible for any costs they incur defending themselves. 5. ROOTSWEB RESOURCES MAY NOT BE RESOLD: No RootsWeb facilities -- for example, Web sites, Mailing Lists, and message boards -- may be resold. Public domain content on RootsWeb may not be harvested for commercial or other use, other than as would have been permitted by the Fair Use provisions of American copyright law if the material had been copyrighted. Material written and posted by an individual may not be harvested for commercial or other use, except with the permission of that individual or as permitted by Fair Use. 6. ROOTSWEB MAY REFUSE SERVICE: For violations of this agreement or other policies posted on the RootsWeb site, RootsWeb may revoke the violator's right to use part or all of the RootsWeb site. SUMMARY: As you can clearly see, RootsWeb takes the rights of copyright owners seriously. As their Acceptable Use Policy (above) states, users are expected to post only material they own. Therefore when you post to the RootsWeb's Mailing List, you must either be the copyright holder (that basically means you wrote it), have written permission from the copyright holder, or the material must clearly be in the public domain. For additional information and guidelines pertaining to "copyright", please visit: <http://twp.rootsweb.com/copyright.html> YVON'S FINAL THOUGHT: After reading the massive amount of information at the above-noted link, it appears that the consensus is that one can reprint a PORTION of an article however, reprinting an entire article _does_ violate the copyright. I am certain that most people who do this, do not INTENTIONALLY violate the copyright law, but nevertheless it is important that you protect yourselves. Also, please remember, once a message is posted to the Mailing List, it is automatically/permanently archived by the Rootsweb software and CANNOT be removed from that archive. FYI. AN IMPORTANT PS: The subject of "copyright" is NOT appropriate for this Mailing List. If after carefully reviewing the information at the above-noted link, you have any questions, they should be directed to ME in a _private_ message. YVON L. 1. How do you get removed from the Mailing List?
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Once you have joined, there are only _three_ ways a subscriber can get removed from the TRAHAN Mailing List: 1. You chose to unsubscribe yourself for whatever reason. 2. I chose to unsubscribe you because you are not following established guidelines. 3. The Rootsweb software automatically removes you from the Mailing List, because messages being sent to your address are being "bounced-back". Item # 1: a) You may chose to "temporarily" unsubscribe from the List because you are going to be absent for an extended period of time. That of course is YOUR decision and when you return, you need only re-subscribe. In this instance, you are NOT required to provide me your name when you re-subscribe, since I already have you in my records. If however, you change your e-mail address before re-subscribing, be certain to send me your complete name. b) You change your e-mail address, in which case, you need to unsubscribe the "old" address and re-subscribe under your "new" address. Here again, you must provide me your complete name for my records (only). Item # 2: a) Very few people get removed from the List by myself...and when they do, it is usually after they've received fair warning that they are breaking established guidelines of the Mailing List (a blatant "flaming" message is one of the few exceptions where a member may be removed without further warning). While I can usually live with heated discussions, I cannot condone and will not accept any personal attacks against any subscriber. b) When subscribers are removed from List by myself, it is PERMANENT and they cannot re-subscribe. Item # 3: a) The Rootsweb software automatically unsubscribe's a member, when a number of messages from the Mailing List have been "bounced-back" (for whatever reason) by the subscriber's Internet Service Provider. While a change in e-mail address can cause this, more often it is because the subscribers Mailbox is full (or exceeds the size allowed by your ISP). b) I am provided a copy of all "bounced" messages by the Rootsweb software and I usually attempt to advise the subscriber...however, sometimes my messages are also "bounced". If you do receive my message, you need to quickly contact your local ISP to have the matter rectified and/or delete some of the messages in your Mailbox (at the ISP server level). c) If you stop receiving messages from the Mailing List (and have _not_ been informed that I was unsubscribing you for cause), you need only re-subscribe by using the information listed at the URL address of my signature. 1. Chat Room for ACADIAN-CAJUN Cousins
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Every SUNDAY evenings starting at 7:00 PM (Eastern time), all Acadian-Cajun cousins are invited to meet in the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room located at: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html This is your opportunity to "TALK" with all your Acadian-Cajun friends and cousins. Won't you join in? PS: If this is your first time "at the party", you may want to arrive a bit early, in order to have the opportunity to check things and figure out how to enter the 'Chat room". PSS: As we all know, the Mailing List is primarily intended for genealogy-related discussions however, there are times when subscribers might want to discuss a subject matter not quite suitable for the Mailing List. Obviously the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room is an excellent medium for this purpose. While the regularly scheduled Sunday meeting (7:00 PM Eastern) is a _weekly_ happening for the subscribers of this TRAHAN Mailing List, keep in mind that anyone...at anytime...can meet to "talk" in the Chat Room. Just (privately) send each other an e-mail message and decide what date/time you want to meet. Then, at the pre-arranged time, click on the URL address: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html ...and follow instructions there, for your get-together. PSSS: You must have your Internet Browser (Netscape, Explorer etc.) java-enabled. If you are not certain how to do this, contact your Internet Service Provided for assistance. YVON L. 3. Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this TRAHAN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- (If you haven't already done so), may I encourage EVERY subscriber to tell us a little bit about themselves by posting a BRIEF message to the Mailing List to tell everyone about their interest in genealogy, something along these lines... --------------------------------------------------------------- SAMPLE MESSAGE: "My name is Yvon Cyr and I am the Listowner of over two dozen Rootsweb Mailing Lists, including this one. I'm originally from Grand Falls, New Brunswick... right smack in what has become known as the Madawaska Territory where so much wonderful Acadian history has been written. I now live in Ontario, Canada. My late father was Robert CYR (born February 2, 1910); my deceased mother Annie OUELLETTE (born May 14, 1914) and I am married to Judy THERIAULT, the daughter of Eugene (born March 11, 1892) and Alice MICHAUD (born May 5, 1896) [the main four surnames I am researching]. I have over 110,000 (directly related) names in my personal data and have produced two Acadian-Cajun Genealogy CD's with over one million names combined (with complete pedigree). It don't get much more Acadian than that! <grin> I am the Webmaster of the Acadian Genealogy Homepage which may be viewed at URL address: http://www.acadian.org where details of my CD's are posted. I encourage Acadian-Cajun webmasters to add links to their own web site, by visiting http://www.acadian.org/hotlinks/ Working in conjunction with KH&A Printing Inc., I can now assist in providing beautiful family tree wall charts... as you've never seen before! For complete details, connect to http://www.acadian.org/charts.html -------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE 1: Try to keep your message as genealogy-related as possible. For example, you might want to include your direct (Acadian-Cajun) lineage, as far back as you have been able to trace same. HOWEVER, keep in mind that the _size_ of your message cannot exceed 20 K bytes... otherwise it will be rejected by the Rootsweb software. NOTE 2: Please use your own SURNAME in the "Subject Heading" of your message. For example, an appropriate "Subject" for my message might have been... "CYR, Yvon; Introduction". This will ensure that the message is properly archived. Thanks. NOTE 3: Please do NOT include a _long_ list of surnames in your message (unless it is in your direct lineage). Include only the FOUR main surnames you are researching. NOTE 4: Don't send your message to ME. Post it directly to the Mailing List for all your cousins to see, by sending it to: TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com [For those who are posting to the List for the first time, please note that the word "request" is NOT included in the address and is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe to/from the Mailing List]. YVON L. 1. I'll be away from the Mailing List.
    2. Yvon Cyr
    3. Hi Folks: Thought I'd give you a "heads-up" that I will be away from the Mailing List for the next couple of months. During my absence, I would appreciate if all subscribers followed the established guidelines of the List, which may be viewed at: http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.com For your future reference, I would recommend you print-out a copy of this message and in the event you are required to make changes to your subscription, here's a reminder of what you need to do: 1. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST: First you need to determine if you are subscribed to the "L" (List) mode, or the "D" (Digest mode). If you are receiving _individual_ messages from the List, then you are subscribed to the "L" mode. If you receive messages in packets (of 10 to 20 messages), then you are subscribed to the "D" mode. a) To unsubscribe from the "L" mode, merely send a message to: TRAHAN-L-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). b) To unsubscribe from the "D" mode, merely send a message to: TRAHAN-D-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). Note 1: If you have done it correctly, you will receive a "robot" message from Rootsweb, confirming that you have been unsubscribed from the List. Note2: The word "request" in the above-noted addresses, is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List. 2. TO RE-SUBSCRIBE TO THE LIST: a) To re-subscribe to the "L" mode, merely send a message to: TRAHAN-L-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word SUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). b) To re-subscribe to the "D" mode, merely send a message to: TRAHAN-D-request@rootsweb.com ... with the single word SUBSCRIBE in the body of your message (do not include any signature). Note 1: If you have done it correctly, you will receive a "robot" message from Rootsweb, confirming that you have been re-subscribed to the List. Note2: The word "request" in the above-noted addresses, is only used to subscribe or unsubscribe from the List. 3. TO CHANGE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION MODE: Use the above-noted instructions to UNSUBSCRIBE from your present mode, and the similar instructions to re-SUBSCRIBE to the new mode. 4. TO SEND MESSAGES TO THE LIST: You can only post messages to the List, if you are properly subscribed... and your message cannot exceed 20 K bytes, nor can it include any attachments. To post a message to the Mailing List, merely send it to: TRAHAN-L@rootsweb.com Note 1: Your message will be posted to BOTH the "L" and "D" modes for everyone to see. Note 2: The word "request" is NOT used in the address (it is only included to subscribe or unsubscribe from/to the List). As you know, all messages posted to the List are permanently archived and I will be reviewing these on my return... "see" ya soon. YVON L.
