I reread your post. He couldn't be a sibling (at least not a full sibling) to Hortence and Victor. I wonder if Ricard was a resident or was he a servant? You mentioned that Renice appeared in two records as a servant in 1860. Was there a surname for the 2nd household? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I can't tell you how much you opened a window for me in that last post. All I ever heard was that Renice was a slave from Ghana. And you have found my great grandfather!!! I haven't heard the name Ricard, but maybe he's another sibling to Victor and Hortense. Keep your eyes open for any Moutons. I heard years ago from an aunt that they maybe a part of the siblings as well. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I went into search mode this morning and it's been hard to stop. I'm not sure if you've seen it but I found a record(1870 census) of Rernice that gives her names as Ramier. On this census record, she is listed as a domestic servant with two children. Those children are Hortence and Victor. She is 22 at the time. This would put her birth at about 1848. I also found two other records which may be her and she is 12 or 13. She is listed as Azema. It's the 1860 census. She is a servant in both. same age but on one there is something interesting. She seems to be a servant and the lady of the house has the maiden name of Boudreaux. On the other record, there is a young man listed under her named Ricard and he's 15. Not sure what all that means but it's odd that the name and age would appear. Seems more than coincidence. I attached it to her record. I did notice also that the name of Charles Trahan is the name of many men. Apparently, he was a slave owner. So, the person she had Mary with may not have been a husband. Or he could have been a former slave. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm gonna have to contact one of my Cousin Eva's children and see about getting pictures to upload. As thorough a person as Cousin Eva was, I can't imagine how she wouldn't have had something. I'm gonna start with Adam again and see what I can find. If you have anything on the other childrens names, please let me know. I remember as a little girl, Cousin Eva would bring someone to visit my grandma Asame and I think her name was Noami. They grew up together. Not sure if it was cousin Eva's mother, sister or aunt. I got most of the names from my Uncle James and my mom(Ernestine) and you probably know both. Uncle James died last year and he knew more than most. For some reason, this side(Melonson) of the family seems completely left off any census reports. Or maybe the names I have are incorrect. I received a reply about Mary H. Trahan in October and the person told me there was a son by the name of Narcisse. I've never heard that name before. But obviously, he could have been one of her children. And it would be great to share stories. Seven was the name of one of my grandfather's brothers. We never knew why he was called Seven, as that was only a nickname. Later during my research, I was assisted by a genealogist who graciously shared that my great grandfather's name was Sevenne. No one in our family, for generations, ever knew that. So that was a major discovery. I don't know anything about Charles Trahan, only that he was Mary Hortense's father. But I am curious, is your picture which is entitled "Grandma Trahan", Renice? She was Charles wife, so her last name would be Trahan and she would be grandmother to your grandmother Asame, correct? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Do you know anything about your great uncle Adam's family (Asame's brother)? Were there many brothers and sisters on your grandmother's side. I sent a reply back to you in October that I just realized was very wrong. I think I gave you my grandfathers brother and sisters names. So, I'm gonna try to redeem myself and tell you I am related to the Mary Hortense Trahan you mailed me about. She would be my great grandmother I think. She had many children and one her babies was Asame who was my grandmother. I received an email from one of your relatives as you have the same family name of boudreaux. who would have been the half brother of Mary right? Please forgive me for the mistake. I spend way too much time on ancestry and sometimes the names run together. thanks and sorry about my mistake. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. A few years ago, my Aunt elaine gave me a letter from a relative and there was a family history typed on it.Maybe it came from you or someone on your side of the family. Sevenne was one of the names and I believe Boudreaux was also there. I need to find it and send it to you. Maybe it can help you in some way. So, Mary Hortense Trahan was not white. Do you know anything about Charles Trahan? I ask because the picture is grandma Trahan. She was much light from what I've been told. Once I saw your message I went back and started looking again and thought I saw Someone I thought might be Cousin Sadie. She was Grandma Asame's 1st cousin I think. Not sure who her mother or father was but I did find someone with similar family names. Sorry if I'm all over the place. The Melancon/Meloncon side is extremely difficult to locate. I can't find anything. I try to change the spelling when I search and still nothing. Maybe once I add Mary Trahan's parents it will help. Please keep in touch and I will do the same. Renice (Azema) and Sevenne Boudreaux produced Mary Hortense's 1/2 brother -- Joseph Boudreaux, who was my great grandfather. Renice (or spelled Rernice) was a slave from Ghana. Her name as a slave was Azema. So Rernice was the mother of Hortense and Joseph, but they had different fathers. I don't know that much about Charles Trahan, but Sevenne Boudreaux was white, so her 1/2 brother Joseph was mulatto. I noticed a picture on your profile called Grandma Trahan. Is that a picture of your Grandmother Asame's mother (Hortense) or grandmother (Rernice)? My father recall's his great aunt Hortense when he was a boy. He still talks about a line that he stills remember in French that she would say all of the time. I'll have to ask him again what it is. Your grandmother Asame had a brother named Adam (1 of the 12 or 13 siblings). Adam's daughter's name was Eva (she passed within the p! ast 2 years). Eva was your mother, Ernestine's 1st cousin. That made Eva your 2nd cousin. Eva's children are your third cousins. I'm on the Boudreaux side of Mary Hortense's family. My grandfather and his 9 siblings (10 in all) were your grandmother Asame's 1st cousins. My father would be Asame's 2nd Cousin and I'm her 3rd Cousin. So that would make you my 5th cousin. One of your other 5th cousins on the Melonson side, and I, have been working on bridging the Hortense Trahan and Joseph Boudreaux family trees together since the early 90s. As far as I know, she had many children but I may not have all their names. I have 12 so far. I have yet to find any of my great aunts and uncles from this side of the family. If we have the same Mary Hortense it's my understanding she was white and my great grandfather was creole or mulatto and could pass for white.
