Minton seems to be a very small place now but may have been bigger in the past. Yes, older records often have phonetic spellings. I've seen the same name spelled 3 or more different ways in the same record, all written by the same clerk! "Correct" spelling was apparently not a priority. If you're working from a marriage certificate, try the marriage record books in the county where Minton GA is located. Good Luck! ... 3. Margie, once before I t hink I checked this area.  There are Tomberlins in that area, not necessarily Tift County.   Now I have looked at the census records really can't  tie John or Henry into any of  them, but that really doesn't mean much.  Back in the 60s I worked for an insurance agency and an application was  turned in on a man named Tomberlin and he told the agent that sold him the policy that he was kin to me. I wasn't involved in genealogy at the time and had no idea what he was basing it on.  I have no idea when they moved to Alabama.   Georgia has lots of counties for the size of the state.  You can drive through several of them in an hour.  Thank you for your idea!!  The certificate was typed and clear and  blanks filled, but the man typed what he heard and the way he would have  spelled it, not known the place. Minton does not show up on my map.  Is Minton a small  community.    Thank You!! Margie Allen In a message dated 11/30/2009 10:54:25 P.M. Author: satomlin0710 Surnames: Tomlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.tomlin/547.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I perused over the titles to some of their books and they look like they might be good as they appear to deal with specific genealogies. So much of the surname product business is a big scam as they make it sound like everyone with the same surname comes from the same root person of their surname. Thus they make it sound like we all have the same family history. The so called "family crest" pedders are a good example of this. Actually a crest is merely part of a coat of arms and coats of arms were not granted to families but to individual men and are inheritable property by individual men. Any time you go into someone's home and see one of those walnut plaques with a coat of arms on it on their den wall or over their fire place, it is okay to smile to yourself but to laugh at people in their own homes about something like that would be rude. A coat of arms that has been legitimately passed down from father to son will not be mounted on a walnut plaque and actually it will not have your surname over or under it. Most were granted before surnames were common or stable. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
