It is strongly believed that he came from the East Malling district of Kent. He described himself as a 'mariner' whenh he was admitted to a masonic lodge in his late 20's. They had one son, John born around 1803/06. It is believed he was in the seafencibles a sort of marine homeguard raised to fight during the Napoleonic wars and that he died in a battle between smugglers and preventatives in 1809 at age 34. Death was attributed to a heart attack, Jarrell was formerly of Minden and was employed as a janitor at the wire mill in Baltimore, He was born at Dorothy. Survivors include his wife, Ethel C. In answering many questions about genealogy, I have found that there are lots of people who do not know that the surname product business is a racket. Now I would be cautious about accusing anyone with a kiosk in mall selling so called "family crest" as a crook. They just might have bought into a franchise and really know absolutely next to nothing about the rules of heraldry. When surnames were taken or assigned in Europe during the last millennium, it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to wind up with a different surname and still each could have shared his surname with others with no known relationship. In the Netherlands and low countries it wasn't until the reign of Napoleon that people had surnames. In England most had one by the end of the 14th century and still in many cases it was a couple of more centuries before the same surname was passed down to subsequent generations. The purpose was not to identify a man as a member of a family but they had a poll (people) tax and they had to have a way of identifying people. Too many Toms, Henrys, Freds, Homers etc in the same town or village and they had to have a way of telling them apart. One of the most outrageous examples of surname product scams are those iwho sell so called "family crest" like they belong to everyone with the same surname and they don't. A crest is merely part of a coat of arms. It is the 3 dimensional beast on top of the helmet. The earliest coats of arms that were granted in England did not have crest but one might be added for some deed pleasing to the crown. About the 16th centuries all coats of arms granted had a crest. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames and as a matter of fact in most countries they don't belong to families but to individuals and are inherited by individuals. In England, Wales, Scotland they are granted by the specific heraldry authority. In Ireland there are arms that are granted to individuals and there are clan arms. However if you have an Irish name you still cannot take it for granted that arms associated with your surname are your clan arms. Examples: O'Brien(descendant of grandson of Brian). Someone once asked me if a certain person named O'Brien was a descendant of Brian Boru. I simply said, "I don't know." A man present named O'Connell said, "you have to understand there was more than one Brian that had descendants." Another person who had the family name O'Connor (descendant of Conchobhar) said there was more than one Conchobhar that had descendants. So if you are Irish and you want to find your clan arms if you have one, you must send your family! tree along with documentation to the Chief Herald of Ireland. In continental countries they are usually assumed by individuals. Unlike Britain where they began for titled people of wealth and then later for just important people, in Germany any man that was a craftsman or tradesman had his own designed and made up to identify his craft or trade. In Poland they do belong to famillies, dynastic families! Frequently more than one man with the same surname, not all necessarily related, were each granted or assumed their own coat of arms, all different. No one peddler who sells them on the internet, at shopping malls, in airports in magazines etc will have all of them. They don't need to in order to sell to suckers. The only time they will have more than one associated with the same surname is if more than one man with the same surname from different national origins were granted or assumed a coat of arms. Then they will have one of each and there might have been 50 others. Most men with that same surname are not entitled to a coat of arms at all as they have no direct male line ancestor that was ever granted or did he assume a coat of arms. To add to the number, in England when a man was granted a coat of arms, all sons were entitled to one with some differences called cadence marks. However, only the oldest son inherits his father's upon his father's death. A coat of arms that has legitimately been passed down from father to son will not be on a walnut plaque and it will not have a surname over or under it. Most were granted before surnames were common or stable. Now a person might claim more than one in their family tree. That doesn't mean personally they are entitled to any one of them. It just means if after doing family research they find more than one ancestor that were granted or assumed a coat of arms and if they have a book printed or even published on their family history, it is quite valid for them to put pictures of their ancestors' coats of arms in their book. However, it would not be valid to put in their book those that just happened to be granted to persons with the same surname as their ancestors. For Americans if a peson has any English lines that goes back to early colonial days in the American South, they have an excellent chance of having several in their family tree. The early Jamestown settlers, many came from titled famillies and later on when Cromwell over threw Chares II, many younger members of royal Cavalier families immigrated to Virginia. Over the years due to intermarriage a large portion of people whose ancestors have been in the South for 2-3 hundred years have ancestors going back to the Jamestown settlement or the Cavialier families of Virginia. But it requires research to get this information, not taking a picture for instance off of House of Names website of a coat of arms they have with a surname in your family under it. If you do have any English lines going back 350-400 years in the South, you probably have distant cousins you never met that have the ones the ancestors you share in common with them brought over from England. As a rule the! y don't display them. They aren't any good for buying groceries. Walmart won't take them as a credit card. They won't help your 401k. Now some Americans who have gained wealth and prominence have applied to the College of Arms and have been granted one but I understand those are not hereditary. I heard a person over a genealogy society many years ago said if those on Boston's Back Bay have them, that's how they got them. Also, I understand those that have been granted to men that have been knighted are not hereditary. To dispaly a coat of arms without documented proof that you are entitled to it is identity theft and is considered bad taste. In the U.S. we have no laws regarding heraldry and you can display any coat of arms you wish. In some countries, you can have a lawsuit on your hands. In Scotland you can have criminal charges brought against you if you display a coat of arms with documented proof that you are the person entitled to it. So if you have a Scottish name and you have bought a t -shirt from one of the surname product peddlers with a coat of arms on it and you visit Scotland, don't wear the t -shirt.
