I had an uncle Wade Tomlin. He married my fathers sister Clara Marcum of Catlettsburg Ky. Wade worked for Hearne Block Company of Ashland as Yard Foreman for many years before his retirement due to the plant closing and his late age. I was quit close to Wade as was my father. Wade raised two step sons who are now both deceased also. They lived less than an eight of a mile from me on Catlettsburg/Cannonsburg Rd. Wade and my aunt Clara are buried in the Marcum Family Cemetery behind their old home upon the hill. Let me know if this is the right Tomlins. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: satomlin0710 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.tomlin/593.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The X chromosome is untraceable at present and should not be confused with Mitochondrial. Y & X are the 2 sex chromosomes. Then we have 22 pairs of Autosomes. That is what is being used in the so called "ethnicity" testing which has been over hyped. However FamilyTreeDNA will use your Autosomal DNA to match you back 5 generations to people in their database in their FamilyFinderTest. The X is passed from mother to both sons and daughters and in addition 5 out of 6 females get an X from their father. Mitochondrial is in the cytoplasm outside the cells. Both males and females get Mitochondrial from their mother but only the daughters pass it on to the next generation. Y is passed from father to son. One out of six females get a Y from their father. If they do so they will not have ovaries but undeveloped testicles. The reason why the testicles do not develop and they turn into the female phenotype is they are born totally insensitive to testosterone. They are totally estrogen and frequently have more feminine features, are softer and have larger breast than xx females. They generatlly will not know they have a Y until they go through puberty and fail to have a menstrual period and as a result their doctor will run some tests. You get Autosomal 50-50 from both parents but not necessarily 25% from each of your 4 grandparents. The reason why what you inherited can be biased between grandmother and grandfather on both sides of the family. When your parents passed on their DNA to you what they received from your grandparents went through a process of random recombination. Any bias you inherited will not be how your siblings inherited it. An exception can be for identical twins. There are no Haplogroups with Autosomal. Here is a short video re Autosomal. http://www.smgf.org/education/animations/autosomal.jspx For those curious out the overall ancestral testing of ethnicity testing. Don't be hoodwinked. Y & Mitochondrial are not good for this type of testing as you get each from only one person in each generation you go back. Get back to your 16 great great grandparents and 14 of them will be excluded from both analysis. So Autosomal is used which is more complicated and does not come down in a straight line unchanged. There are no Haplogroups wth Autosomal. So no doubt what they do is match you with population samples in their database. It has been reported on the genealogy board of Yahoo Answers that the same persons have sent off to have this so called "ethnicity" testing to more than company and the results are not the same. You have to understand one might be deficient in certain population samples the other one isn't and vice versa. So warn anybody who is thinking about taking one of those type test what to expect. Maury Povich doesn't know enough to ask questions and! George Lopez needs to have his analysis done by other companies and find he will have different results. I would love to see a Y DNA website for the Tomlin surname. I have only one cousin left who is a direct male line descendant of my great grandfather and I have a brick wall on my direct Tomlin line. 1. [TOMLIN] DNA testing for genealogy purposes
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: wclaurence Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.tomlin/593/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It is my guess that everyone has heard of, or knows something about, DNA testing by now. It is mentioned with regularity in the newspaper these days with regards to criminal cases. Most of us that watch police dramas on television have seen a bad guy getting the inside of his cheek swabbed for a saliva sample. And from that saliva sample, specific markers, or chemicals, in his DNA structure will be tested, that pertain only to him, to see if they match human samples left at a crime scene. This is a wonderful tool for prosecuting criminals. But, how many of us are aware of DNA testing for genealogy purposes? Everyone involved in genealogy research is familiar with the 'paper trail'. We've all had our share of visiting court houses and libraries, and reading microfilm, and tromping through cemeteries. And probably all of us doing research have hit the 'brick wall' with one or more of our tree branches. We may even have a possible 'cousin' that we know of that we can't connect to our tree through a paper record. This is where DNA testing could come in handy. Also, we can use DNA results to prove or disprove an old family legend. The genetic markers that are tested for genealogy purposes are different than the markers tested for criminal purposes. Our fathers have a Y and an X chromosome, and our mothers have two X chromosomes. If a newborn has a Y chromosome from the father, and an X chromosome from the mother, this newborn will be a boy. If a newborn has an X chromosome from the father, and an X chromosome from the mother, this newborn will be a girl. In boys, that same Y chromosome gets passed from father to son, generation after generation. So, when a son has his Y-DNA markers tested for genealogy purposes, he is also testing his father's markers, his father's father's markers, his father's father's father's markers, and so on. As an example, your great-grandfather passed on his Y chromosome to all of his sons, who passed it on to all of their sons, and so on. So, your male cousins, second cousins, and so on, that share your surname, will all share the same results from DNA testing. The odd marker result may differ due to a mutation in that marker. As you can see, the genetic markers that are tested for genealogy purposes pertain to all the males in the same family. There is a quality DNA project that started in April 2000 called Family Tree DNA, out of Houston, Texas. Originally they used the lab at the University of Arizona for all their testing, but now have a second lab in Houston running tests, as well. Inside this project, genealogy researchers like you and I have started up surname groups and geographical groups to help each other achieve a common goal. As you might have gathered, my favorite DNA test is the Y-DNA test that males participate in, and there are a total of 243,362 males in the overall project that have tested, to date. A test kit can be ordered, and paid for by credit card, on-line. The cost will be in US dollars. Family Tree DNA mails a test kit to your home address, you swab the inside of your cheek, and you return the test kit through the post back to the lab. The lab offers 12 marker, 25 marker, 37 marker and 67 marker tests. It is recommended that at least a 37 marker test be purchased. Once your test kit is received back at the lab, it should take approximately 2 months for the results to be culled from your sample. Family Tree DNA will set up a personal page for you on their website, that you will access with your test kit number and a password, so you can privately monitor your test's progress, your test's results, and see others in the project with whom your results match, among other things. Your results will also be posted on the Tumlin-Tomlin-Tinlin Y-results page, on the surname's web pages, for all to view, and to see how all the different Tomlin tester's results compare. Family Tree DNA's website is: www.familytreedna.com The Tumlin-Tomlin-Tinlin Surname Group's website is: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/tumlin/results There is nothing to be concerned about regarding privacy issues. No one can learn anything about you personally with this information. So, Tomlin gentlemen, please consider using Y-DNA testing as one of your genealogy tools. Let's expand the size of the group, and hope for matches to help us expand our family trees. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
