The story I was told, was that my Great Grandfather's mother was a Skipper, and his father was unknown. Charles Lee Selivant (later changed to Sullivan) came to Texas with a family by the name Tomlin, and settled in Van Zandt County, Texas. The family members of the Tomlin family were: Jesse M. Tomlin Nannie Tomlin Tabitha F. Tomlin Bonnie M. Tomlin Narcissa Tomlin Dovie Tomlin I don't know if the Tomlins, Selivants, and Skippers were related or not, but I hope someone knows of Charles Lee Selivant's parentage. On the 1755 Tax List there is listed a William Tomlin and a John Tomalin. I think that one of these may be the family I'm looking for. >From there Orange county gets divided several times, so I don't know where they are by 1771. There are several Tomlin and Tomlinson families throughout NC, and on the 1790 census they show up in the following counties: Iredell, Chatham, Craven, Guilford, Randolph, and Wake Counties. In 1807, Elizabeth Tomlin, who is the mother of Sarah (md. William Bridges), John and Charles Tomlin; David and George Philips, writes her will in Rockingham Co., NC.(proved 1810). I think she was born about 1730 or so. She is somehow related to Abraham Philips and Sarah Philips/Job Baker of that same county (maybe sister or sister-in-law). I am trying to figure out which Tomlin she was married to. If anyone knows anything about the Tomlin or Tomlinson families in any of these counties, please help? A HUGE Thank you in advance! Amy. It was my own birth father, after he impregnated a teenager and left my mother for her. Don't know why they adopted the child out...maybe due to the youth of the mother? They subsequently were married for a while. Sigh... The things ya find out doing genealogy! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My father's Middle name was his mother's maiden name too. Daddy was blonde as a youth, not red-headed. Could he be a half -brother of mine? My dad served in the Canadian Army beginning in his late teens. He served overseas for about 7 years. That would make any offspring about 67 years old and be an obvious reason to put a child up for adoption. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are some "similarities" but the one I am looking for is not your father. My John Tomlin (born California) dropped his birth surname of Ishmael and changed his name to his mother's maiden name, taking his Father's givrn name of Samuel as his middle name. John married and he and his wife adopted a son. I believe the son, a redhead called Jack, is/was maybe my half brother. Next time I will remember that "CA" also stands for Canada! The whole family seems to have been born, married and died in Leigh on Sea in Essex. The men of the family were all fisherman. Do you have access to www.genesreunited.com? I have my whole Tomlin tree on there at the moment. If not, let me know and I'll download the GEDCOM file for you and send it on if you have the software to open it and also give me an email address.
