True there are migrant Toman families in Ireland who were indeed brought to N ireland to work the looms the name was angliacised in their case from the usual as this would have helped them to integrate and settle more easily in their new country I guess. 1. Re: [TOMAN] Toman''s of Northern Ireland
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: terryleigh127 Surnames: Toman, Barbour, Bradley, Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.toman/5.38/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Catherine, My Grandfather was Patrick Toman of Mills Street Hilden N Ireland and he had six sons and six daughters . The name Barbour is strongly associated with the Linen Industry and the Mill was situated in Hilden . Perhaps there is a connection there for you to chase up. The Barbours were a wealthy family who were strongly identified with the so called trial Industrial village of Hilden which was an experiment in breaking down the religious predjudices in Ulster by that very devout Quaker family. I am also chasing Patricks family tree so if there are any connections to the Tomans of Hilden N ireland I would appreciate your help with that. Patrick was a soldier in the 14-18 war and served for 3.5 years on the western front and in Belgium, he was wounded twice and returned to service both times . The predjudice against the Irish Catholic men was very strong and he would have suffered abuse from both sides of that debacle as the Nationalist community would have seen him as being a lackey of the British perhaps whilst the Other side were plain haters of all things Irish Catholic or green so he would not have been properly welcomed home after the war as the hero he indeed was. I hope there is some linkage here if not all the best anyways with your searches. Best Regards Terry Bradley Expat Irishman and Australian resident nowdays Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
