    3. I'm just beginning to appreciate who the Tolpuddle Martyrs were. Is the following correct? James Brine (another source says 'Joseph') Thomas Stand(s)field John Standfield - (son of Thomas) hotel proprietor/ eventually became Mayor of district George Loveless - Methodist lay preacher - died 1874 James Loveless - farm near settlement of Siloam/Canada James Hammett - settled again in Tolpuddle/died 1891 One source <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/Tolpuddle.htm> says "..only Hammett stayed in the country. The others moved to farms purchased for them in Essex by a public subscription called the Dorchester Labourers Fund." <http://www.dorset-cc.gov.uk/tolpudd.htm> = "...three emigrated to East London, Ontario, Canada, where John Standfield eventually became the Mayor..." Where's the father, Thomas? It's true, one doesn't find STANDFIELD in the 1851 or 1861 Tolpuddle census listings, but that doesn't mean they're not nearby. In the 1871 census there is a listing in Household #4 (nextdoor to Martha LOVELESS, a 55-y/o widowed dressmaker; Household #6 = John Hammett) James Standfield Head 40? Retired Naval Officer (Greenwich) Mary A Standfield wife 44 (both b. Dorset Whitechurch) James R Standfield son 7 'Scholar' b. Dorset Broadway Eliza H Standfield dau 5 Scholar b. Dorset Broadway Harry Standfield son 3 b. Dorset Broadway Mary F. L. " dau 2 b. Dorset Broadway (guess they're 'relative'ly newcomers from Broadway - anyone find it?) So, Dinniah Loveless (dau of Thomas Loveless and Dinah/Dianna STRICKLAND) married Thomas Standfield and there's the following family group recorded in the LDS Ancestral file: 1. Elizabeth STANFIELD b 1818 in Dorset Christened: 15 SEP 1818 @ Conygar, Lane-Wesleyan, Weymouth Married: James BRINE 20 JUN 1839 @ Greensted, Essex County, Eng Died: 23 Apr 1906 in Blandshard Twp, Perth Co, Ontario Buried: St. Mary's Cemetery, Blandshard Two, Ontario 2. John STANFIELD b. 'before 1818' in England Buried: London, Ontario 3. Charity STANFIELD Christened 15 Jul 1823 @ Conygar Lane, Wesleyan, Weymouth 4.
