    3. Does anyone know who Captain LOVELESS was? The Sussex Weekly Advertiser, Monday, September 18th, 1809 has an alphabetical list under Game Duty, of individuals who obtained licenses for killing of Game in Sussex, September 16th 1809, including Loveless, Captain, of Brighton, Sussex. Also included are May, Thomas jun. and May, Richard, both of Billingshurst, Sussex. These entries may be relevant to the later marriage of William Henry LOVELESS to Mary Jane MAY in Portsea, Hampshire, in 1875 DecQtr, as William was in the Royal Navy, b. 1854, Portsea (age 27 in 1881 Census.) Mary Jane MAY was a daughter of William MAY and Mary Ann CLEMENTS, and William MAY was born in 1822 in Brighton, Sussex to Celia MAY, widow of Dean MAY (who died in 1817). William claimed Dean as his father in 1854 when he married Mary Ann. It is not clear who was his actual father! There may have been some longtime connection, therefore, between the LOVELESS and MAY families in the Brighton area. My conjecture is that Capt. Loveless could have been William Henry's father or grandfather, or a great-uncle, perhaps. I don't even have a first name, though I suspect that W.H's father and grandfather were also named William Henry, based on a son William Henry LOVELESS and a possible grandson named William Henry V LOVELESS. The MAY family definitely was in Brighton for a good portion of the 18th century, and Thomas could have been a son of Richard, though what connection if any Richard has to Dean, I do not know. There is a Thomas MAY b. 1744, s/o James MAY and Mary DEAN, but I do not have any Richard MAYs in the lines so far researched. Thomas's brothers John and Edward were married, but I don't have any children for John and no Richard among Edward's children (there is a seven year gap between the second and third.) Two other brothers James and William, may have married but I have no details, so there are plenty of possibilities for a Richard in the mid 1700's and a son Thomas in the late 1700's. Any information on either of these names would be helpful! I still have no known parents for William Henry LOVELESS and no known connections between him and any Dorset LOVELESS family. It is VERY frustrating not to be able to find him or his ancestry. (No birth or baptism record found in Portsea, either, only the 1881 census to go on!) Doesn't anyone have any connections to Hampshire or Sussex? Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
