I've been transferring some files from my old Macintosh to a newer system and noticed that this had been put in the "READ MAIL" file....did it ever get out to people? jki Subject: [TOLPUDDLE]LOVELESS/ COSH? Sent: 9/12/99 11:50 AM To: [email protected] Dave Doldon, [email protected] Lovelace List, [email protected] Greg Lovelace, [email protected] I have the enumerator's handwriting on the pages of 1851 census for Tolpuddle which I printed from microfilm and I'd like to lift out a few items for analysis: First, I would like to suggest that the spelling of "Tolpiddle" (and that is how the enumerator consistently spells it at the upper left corner of the pages) might be a clue as to whether there might be other miscalculations....unless that was the spelling of the village's name at that time -- proximity of other 'piddle' names suggests it was a simple mistake done by an 'outsider,' ergo the possibility of other misspellings? [enumerator also uses old 'fs' for double 's's, like Cross] Households #3 and #4 are "Daniel" (Edward and Henry) Household #5: Wiliam Lovelefs Head M 32 Ag lab b Tolpiddle Rebecca D wife - 31 D ('ditto') Ann COSH Dau in law 9 Scholar [Until Dave's posting, I was almost ready to read this "CASH; and what type of relationship comprises a 9-y/o 'Dau in law'?] Household #10: Thomas Sergeant Head M 24 Ag Lab b Bere Regis (3 mi) Ann D wife D 23 b Tolpiddle ________ name scratched out John son 2 Thomas son 1 Ellen Lovelefs Lodger M 49 Charwoman b D Household #11: Thomas COSH Head M 67 Thatcher b Affpiddle (1 mi) Elizabeth wife M 56 b Melborne [probably 'Milborne St. Andrew' = 2 mi] Sarah dau U 24 Buttoner b ?More Critchett? The "D" indicates he's a COSH] Household #12: Robert COSH Head M 27 Ag Lab b Melborne Elizabeth wife D 25 b Tolpuddle [original cross-out like 'Southover;' corrected later as witnessed by the 'u' in Tolpuddle and different "T"] George son 2 b Tolpiddle Lucy Daniel Lodger U 44 Pauper/Gardener's dau b Tol There's a Lucas family in #13 and we have a Sarah Lucas 'lodger with John and Ann Lovelefs in #14; then Samuel Davison 73 (from Ireland) with his 'Southover-scratched-out+Tolpuddle' wife Diana 63 plus Jane Hammett 29 (Pauper Ag Lab) + Miriam dau 3 y/o Household # 16 is the younger John Lovelefs (it says he's 32 but I think we find him and his son, Arthur, with 'my' Susan Corish/ Cornish Loveless WAY in the next two census listings and he'd actually be 52 here?) At any rate, if you've followed me thus far, the reason for this exercise (and I've worked on this a couple of hours) is to suggest that it might be easy to confuse the 'Ellen Lovelefs' listed in #10 and written right above Thomas COSH, with Thomas COSH's 18-y/o daughter Ellen in household #11.
