Tolpuddle is on the north bank of the River Piddle or Trent, hence so many of the 'piddle' names - and perhaps why the enumerator of the 1851 census lists 'our town' as TOLPIDDLE. The River runs southeasterly to Wareham. Immediately south of Tolpuddle and about 2 miles, the River Frome runs to meet Piddle/Trent at the same estuary. Moreton lies on the south bank of the River Frome and an additional 1-1/2 mile downriver...an easy walk in those days! FYI: About 3 miles southeast of Tulpuddle is an area listed as "Lawrence of Arabia's Cottage" Anyone find Fordington yet? The 'description of enumeration' for Fordington Parish listed on the 1851 census reads: "..as lie on the west of the Turnpike Road leading from Charminster through the Town of Dorchester and Weymouth (including Retreat Cottage and Cottages belonging thereto, Bennett's Village, __arrett's Houses, The Brittania, Grove House, Hamilton Row, All Grove Buildings and __iller's Close, West Mills and the Can____ at the Barracks (every part thereof being within the Parliamentary and Municipal Borough of Dorchester." On the detailed map I've recently received from S&DFHS, the only thing that looks likely is about a mile west of Dorchester and labelled "Fordington Down." But maybe that will get you into the geographical area. I had xeroxed the map in our Nat'l Geo Atlas and drawn circles around Tolpuddle in 10-mile-radius increments then did a spread sheet on the towns surrounding it. I'll probably have to redo the data now that I have a more detailed map! Sometimes one doesn't realize that a name he sees in records is only a few miles away and might be a relative. If anyone's interested in my simplifying the town list and submitting the information, let me know. Jacki Keck - Williams County Genealogical Society Williston ND USA <[email protected]>
