Hi Phillipa My name is Irene Welcome, You have to start by seeing the birth, marriage or death certificate of your grandfather, if he is still alive ask him can you take the details off his certificates. It is very important for you to talk to your elderly relatives. (That was my New Years resolution, to go back and talk to my living relatives, again). In your relatives you should find at least one who has the same interest or one who would know if any relatives have done any genealogy. Women are often the story tellers. On the certificate you will get the name of maybe names of your grandfathers parents. If you cannot get a look at the certificates then go to the St Catherine House register in your nearest library or Morman Family History Centre. On this register you can find your father and even your grandfather it will give you the numbers so that you can order the certificate. I know that you can look at very resent births, marriages and deaths in England because I have looked up my hubby on the St Catherine and he is still alive and kicking and in his early forties. Don't be afraid to ask for help, at the libraries they are very helpful. Stay with us Phillipa and we can guide you through what you need to get, remember there are no short cuts you have to go back step by step. There are some very knowledgable and friendly people on this list so be cheeky, jump in when you like and ask questions. I am in Victoria Australia Phillipa so we are nearly neighbours ;-) >From Irene a very proud mum at the moment with a very clever daughter who received her entrance to University to do Medical Science }}}}}}}} see my puffed chest!
