According to the memoirs of James Heberley (b 1809) his father, John, was captured by a Privateer in the English Channel in the year 1790. He was originally from Wurrtemberg and was presumably trying to emigrate to either England or the USA. The other clue that James gives is that his father was taken prisoner by his "Grandfather" which is a little strange. John Heberley was married to Elizabeth CURTIS in 1809 in Wyke Regis. Elizabeth was the daughter of James CURTIS and Ann SMITH - possibly from the Isle of Wight. The only other name that I have not yet found a positive connection with is LOVELACE, who may be the owner or master of the privateer. Incidentally, I am related to Captain Joseph Hebley who used to live on Cove Street, and who was one of the oldest sea captains who still remembered working the old sailing ships. Any help with the above would be appreciated.
