Fantastic report!! And what a tremendous amount of time and energy you devoted to this memorable occassion, Gayle. The descendancy chart idea was something I had been thinking of developing for our family reunion (we meet every three years) in August. The Ash family (German descent/ESCH) married into the SEBLEY/SHAVE/WAY line and I've been developing material to share August 7-11 in Colorado. One of the projects I'm working on is putting music to the words of a booklet put together c.1954 of songs g-grandfather used to sing. Many American/Irish/Civil War lyrics; but also some typically English songs. Duke University has a wonderful site where you can print American sheet music: <scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/sheetmusic> Anyone know of other sites for musical research? Hi Everybody, I just want to give a brief summary of the Tolpuddle Martyrs Standfield Descendants Family Reunion. We all had a very enjoyable time. Fortunately, our cousins, Jan & Barry Stewart, who visited our rental facility last winter had suggested that we hold the event in the Watson Porter Pavilion at the Fanshawe Conservation Area in London. This buidling is an enclosed facility located on the top of a hill overlooking the man made, Fanshawe Lake. The weather was damp, cool and breezy, but this didn't stop the children from enjoying outdoor activites. Inside the pavilion was a large stone fireplace that was lit for the comfort of those seated on picnic benches in the enclosed room, eventually taking the dampness away and adding the pleasant fragrance of a wood burning fire. There were about 45 people that attended, including a young couple with their young family from Cleveland Ohio in the U.S. We arrived about 10 a.m. and I was able to arrange all the name tags on a table for the attenders as they arrived. On the wall above, I tacked a copy of Wesley Loveless Standfield's family (he was a son of John Standfield T.M.) and another photo of Charity Madeline Standfield ( d/o John Standfield T.M.) and James Cunningham, showing lines from each person in the photo to a color coded dot, that corresponded with a color coded dot on each person's name tag which indicated which line of descent each person was related to. I had also typed and mounted the 1770 Will of Robert Standfield, (Thomas Standfield T.M.'s grandfather) who married Katherine Jones and mounted it on bristol board as a document that may be of interest to some to read. (This will was copied from the Pidela written by Audrey Wirdnam on the account of the history of Tolpuddle.) My brother, Gary had produced an all inclusive family tree, which we have over 2000 names entered. The sheet of paper was over 10 feet in length and as deep as 3 feet in places. Gary also displayed a photo tree of ancestors that lived in Ontario. Several books we have relating to the Standfields were on display, and we had two laptop computers available with the Thomas Standfield descendant files for viewing. Geoff Anderson had donated a copy of his book to the Standfield Family that he graciously left at the motel to be delivered to my brother. Thank you Geoff for your kindness and for the information you have provided in your writings. We appreciate the hard work you have put into it. A London Free Press (local newspaper) reporter and photographer showed up at the beginning of the day and interviewed several early arrivals. They spent about an hour looking at our material, talking to people and shot a variety of photographs. They printed an article in Monday's paper entitled, "Martyrs Descendants Celebrate History" We were delighted to meet many new cousins for the first time. There were many favorable comments on the amount of historical information available on our family's history and the work we all put into assembling it. We took pictures of each person attending to add to our family file as well. It was about 6 p.m. when we left the Park, with promises that we will keep in touch with one another, now that we've put faces to all our names. Gayle

Hello Gayle, Many thanks for your reply. I do have a copy of the TUC book but if you could manage to contact David and extract any photos from him, that would be a great help. Greetings Gayle & everyone else, Firstly Gayle good luck with the reunion. I bet it will be a great success. Gayle, do you, or does anyone else, have any old photos of the Standfield homes in T'pud? One was presumably the pub. I have been trying to track down a Polly Hammett who I'm told lived in the Standfield's house in T'pud. My late mother remembered staying with Polly in the 1920s but couldn't remember how she was linked in with our Hammett and Loveless families. There is a photo of a cottage owned by Mary Hammett (who might just be Polly) the widow of Samuel Hammett son of TM James Hammett hence my interest in knowing if this was also a Standfield cottage. Any help will be much appreciated because Polly is fast becoming my equivalent of Irene's Blasted Bobby - take it you haven't found him yet Irene. Cheers everyone Dawn
Hi Dawn and everyone. The only picture that I have of the Standfield Cottage is the drawing from the The Martyrs Of Tolpuddle book published by the Trades Union Congress. David Standfield a newfound cousin of mine visited Tolpuddle a few years ago and actually knocked on the door of the old Standfield residence and the lady who lived there at the time invited him in for a tour of her home. He, probably has some photographs of the Standfield home and I will try to reach him to see if he does. He will not be attending this reunion that I know of, as we haven't had a response to the invitation notice that we sent. If you would like a copy of the one in the book I have, just let me know and I will scan it and send it to you. Robert Standfield the great grandfather of Thomas Standfield T.M. owned an "alehouse" or a "Tippling House" which was a small version of an Inn, but the exact location is not clear, but it was known as The King's Arms, and was most likely situated near the main road through the village of Dorset. (This info is from the Pidela, which I know you have read Dawn) Just for the interest of those on the List, it says he appears to be a man of average wealth, in that his wearing apparel is in triplicate, and would appear to be of good quality, he possessed silver shoe buckles, had two wigs and quite a lot of ready cash in the house. As well as the King's Arms, he had another house in Topuddle called Clarks, and a house or booth on Woodbury Hill which appears to have been a lodging house for travellers to the fair. His total estate was worth 273 pounds. The Pidela contains the last will and testament of Robert Standfield of the parish of Tolpuddle and it is quite an interesting read as to what he willed to each of his children and his wife Katherine (Jones) Standfield. Robert's daughter Mary married Thomas Raison, and Robert left some money to his grandson Jethro Raison, so if any of you have any Raisons in your genealogy you may be related to the Standfields. Hi All The mind boggles from certain cures for conditions from yesteryear. From a book The A-Z of traditional cures & remedies by Dulcie Lewis ISBN 1 85306 766 0:- Frog spawn An 18th centuary North Country remedy recommended washing in water containing frog spawn to reduce redness and for a clear, healthy skin. Cataplasm An old word for poultice, and in the early 1800's cataplasms of fresh cow dung were recommended for bruises. Cobweb used since Roman times to cover cuts, contains a substance not unlike penicillin and the proteins on the surface of the cobweb helps the blood to coagulate. A cobweb was always kept in a the cellar or emergencies. Spider The people of the Somerset Levels suffered greatly in the past from ague. An old folklore cure recommended carrying a large spider shut in a box and as it died your ague would lessen. Sunburn Wash the burned skin in sage tea. Teeth Were a nuisance and often those setting off for the British Colonies had their teeth extracted before leaving, beign one less thing to worry about. These are just a sample of what the book offers, but makes interesting reading. Cheers Sally

G'day Gayle, Good luck with your reunion, have a great time. I wish we could join you on the 12th of July. Actually My husband John (Jack) William Standfield is not a descendant of the Martyrs, but his 3 X great-grandfather, Richard, was uncle and great-uncle to Thomas & John. He migrated to Haselbury Plucknett in Somerset - married and died there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pete & Gayle Young" <pgyoung@rcv.org> To: <TOLPUDDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2003 10:03 AM Subject: Re: [TOL] Reunion > Hi Lesley, > > Thomas Standfield T.M. and John Standfield T.M. were my gg and ggg > grandfathers. > Thomas Standfield married Dinniah Loveless, the sister of George Loveless > T.M. > > John Standfield T.M. was the father of 7, one being my great grandfather > Wesley Loveless Standfield. > Wesley Loveless Standfield was also the father of 7, one being my > grandfather John (Jack) Herbert > Standfield. Hi Lesley, We formed our first Standfield descendant reunion after meeting new cousins while doing our research. My brother Gary, who lives in Montreal Que. and I have been doing research together for about five years. When we made new contacts, we decided to have a "get-together" and the first one was held in Bolton Ontario with our Toronto area cousins and B.C. cousins in 1990. By 1991 we had found a U.S. limb of our family in the Cleveland Ohio area, with some of their children living in the southern states. That year the Ohio cousins held a gathering in Medina Ohio near Cleveland, so that was our second reunion. This year we have found another limb who are still residing in the London Ont. area, so we decided to hold a reunion this year in London. Most of the U.S. and B.C. folks will not be attending because of distance and finances. So to say we do this every year......we have more or less just started. We thought Fanshawe conservation area was a good place to hold it as it is closest to the Siloam Cemetery should any family members want to view the Martyrs Plaque and graves and get photos. We will try and make it a tradition, if not every year, every two years. We would love to have you come and join us sometime. Hi Lesley, Thomas Standfield T.M. and John Standfield T.M. were my gg and ggg grandfathers. Thomas Standfield married Dinniah Loveless, the sister of George Loveless T.M. John Standfield T.M. was the father of 7, one being my great grandfather Wesley Loveless Standfield. Wesley Loveless Standfield was also the father of 7, one being my grandfather John (Jack) Herbert Standfield. Then my father George Weslie Standfield. You probably don't hear much from me on the List lately as my research is on the Standfields more than the Loveless's and I think that Lorraine Standfield in Aussie and myself are the only Standfield researchers on the List.
