Marriage Notes for AMBROSE LOVELACE/LOVELESS and LENA UNKNOWN: Comber Herald, Aug 6, 1896, Page 1 ON THE QUIET---Ambrose E. Lovelace, of Essex, and Mrs. Lena A. Foster, of Providence, R.I., met at St. Thomas by appointment Thursday and at once set about to attend to the business which brought them, viz., to get married. Mr. Lovelace set out to secure the license, which he did, enjoining the issuer to keep the fact quiet. The couple were driven to the residence of Rev. A. H. Munro, who tied the knot as expeditiously and as tight as any minister in the land could do it. There is a romance in connection with this marriage. The couple had been old lovers, and matters arose which parted them. For twenty four years they have been corresponding, but had not seen each other till they met here Thursday morning before their marriage. St. Thomas Journal. Essex Free Press, July 31, 1896, Page 5. Stay with this -- the answer is at the end -- it will blow you away. One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born, before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man had yet to walk on the moon. Your Grandfather and I got married first and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, "Sir"- - and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir". We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends- not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, itwas junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent store where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in, and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware store, and "software" wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap... and how old do you think I am ???..... Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. Grandma is 58 How could so much go wrong in such a short time?

    3. Thought that this one was good. Donna King Microsoft vs. GM ================ For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally, your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light. 7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

    1. Re: [TOL] jki:Standfield Reunion + music
    2. Pete & Gayle Young
    3. Hi Jacki, Thankyou for you kind comments. Your idea of putting music to the words of a booklet of lyrics that your g grandfather used to sing for your reunion is a unique idea. I'm sure all who attend will really appreciate seeing the lyrics and even singing some of the songs. The color coded dots I used were actually tiny irredescrent different colored smiley faces. I had six colors, red, blue, bronze, purple, green and yellow. I didn't know what to do about the spouses who were not descendants, so I used the same color dot for them as their related spouse and added an extra yellow smiley face dot on the opposite side of the tag, so the unrelated spouses had two dots on their name tags. I used sheets of business cards to print the name tags and bought plastic covers to put them in that were "pin-ons." It was really fun doing them, and mounting the old family pictures with the corresponding colors to person in the photo representing the ancestral lines present at the reunion. We plan to have a gathering every two years. Donna, I just want to say that I missed you as I was hoping that you'd come and we would get to meet one another. Perhaps another time we will.
