    1. [TOL] Tolpuddle School
    2. Kevin McMahon
    3. Hi all Thought you might enjoy reading the following report I made on Tolpuddle School from records held at Kew. This is the school our ancestors would have attended up to 1933. Tolpuddle Village School This school ceased to be registered as a public elementary school from 03/09/1933 (G G Williams letter to Rev H R Long, The Pasonage, Tolpuddle). It closed 28/07/1933 and the children concerned, to attend Puddletown C E school on 04/09/1933. Rev Harold Long tried to stop the closure in his letter of 15/05/1933 to The Secretary, Board of Education, Whitehall, London, where he asked them to consider:- 1) There were new people at the large house, so more employment and families to consider. 2) There had been an excellent report by the Religious Inspector on the school. 3) There was a growing concern of sending small children away to school by bus. One child had already been knocked down by a car on the main road. In a letter dated 11/03/1933 by Clement G Bone, Director of Education, Dorchester to the Board of Education, Whitehall, London, it stated, subject to approval, to discontinue maintenance of Tolpuddle Junior School, only 15 children were attending. The maintenance cost was £260 per annum. A protest was received (not in file, what a shame, as it would list their names) signed by five managers and twelve parents:- Tolpuddle School “We the undersigned being the managers of Tolpuddle School and the parents of the children attending Tolpuddle School wish to protest very strongly against the proposed closure of this school. We wish to point out that this school could easily be carried on under one mistress and that the absence of such young children from home for such a long time is home for such a long time is very unsuitable and bad for them.” The head mistress who left 31/03/1924 was Alice Russell. She was replaced by Eileen Coyle who was appointed 23/06/1924, and left September 1928. She was born 04/10/1889, passed teaching exam 1908 South Shields, last employed East Jarrow Council School, South Shields August 1913 – 22/06/1924 as an assistant teacher. She had previously been a pupil teacher 1908 - 1019. She was replaced by Margaret Evans nee Edwards. She was born 18/10/1884, qualified at Pontypool, last position Hillside Blaenavon, Monmouth 01/07/1913 – 31/01/1919. Was a pupil teacher 1900 – 1904 at Blaenavon Infants. 3. G'day to you all and hope you are all well and happy!!!! I had a great laugh at this and thought I might share it. I give you permission to growl at me if you think its to naughty for the list Donna but thought I would give to a go. Well I must go put my rollers in my hair!! Night All!!! Irene This is an actual extract from a sex education school textbook for girls, printed in the early 60's in the UK, written by a woman! "When retiring to the bedroom, prepare yourself for bed as promptly as possible. Whilst feminine hygiene is of the utmost importance, your tired husband does not want to queue for the bathroom, as he would have to do for his train. But remember to look your best when going to bed. Try to achieve a look that is welcoming without being obvious. If you need to apply face-cream or hair-rollers wait until he is asleep as this can be shocking to a man last thing at night. When it comes to the possibility of intimate relations with your husband it is important to remember your marriage vows and in particular your commitment to obey him. If he feels that he needs to sleep immediately then so be it. In all things be led by your husband's wishes; do not pressure him in any way to stimulate intimacy. Should your husband suggest congress then agree humbly all the while being mindful that a man's satisfaction is more important than a woman's. When he reaches his moment of fulfilment a small moan from yourself is encouraging to him and quite sufficient to indicate any enjoyment that you may have had. Should your husband suggest any of the more unusual practices be obedient and uncomplaining but register any reluctance by remaining silent. It is likely that your husband will then fall promptly asleep so adjust your clothing, freshen up and apply your night-time face and hair care products. You may then set the alarm so that you can arise shortly before him in the morning. This will enable you to have his morning cup of tea ready when he awakes."

Cheers, Carol When God was busy creating.... >On the first day God created the cow. I will give you a life span of >sixty years." >The cow said, "That's a pretty tough life you want me to live for sixty >years. Let me have twenty years and I'll give back the other forty." And >God agreed. > >On the second day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the >door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will >give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too long to >be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give back the other ten." So God >agreed. > >On the third day God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do >monkey tricks, make them laugh. I'll give you a twenty-year life span." >The monkey said, "How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't >think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And >God agreed again (sigh). > >On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, make >love, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy, enjoy. I'll give you twenty years." >The man said, "What? Only twenty years? No way man. Tell you what, I'll >take my twenty, and the forty cow gave back, and the ten dog gave back >and the ten monkey gave back. That makes eighty, okay?" >"Okay," said God. "You've got a deal." > >So that is why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, make >love, enjoy, and do nothing. For the next forty years, we slave in the >sun to support our family; for the next ten years we do monkey tricks to >entertain our grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit in front >of the house and bark at everybody.

    3. Irene Thanks responding to my first email to the Tolpuddle Mailing List. It provided verification of authenticity of the Loveless line presented online by Donna King and gave me a number of second christian names for the chidren of Robert Loveless and Esther Loveless. Their daughter, Amelia Jane Loveless was unkown to me (she's not included in Donna's 'Loveless' tree). I have recently purchased the birth certificate for my grandmother, Evelyn Ethel Loveless and her father is recorded as James Samson Loveless so I am reasonable confident of the relationship although It remains for me to obtain my grandmother's marriage and death certificate and a good quality copy of my mother's birth certificate to make absolutely sure of my claims. Again thanks for your help. Bye for now Malcolm

    3. Hi Rob I have recently purchased the birth certificate for my grandmother, Evelyn Ethel Loveless and her father is recorded as James Samson Loveless so I am reasonable confident of the relationship although it remains for me to obtain my grandmother's marriage and death certificate and a good quality copy of my mother's birth certificate to make absolutely sure of my claims. Therefore subject to any unforseen shocks, I believe we are second cousins having common gt. gt. grandparents and common gt uncles/aunts. It's my guess that the sons of Robert Loveless and Esther Sansom moved from the sticks into the Bournemouth district circa 1890. Bournemouth was still a new and fast growing town at the end of the 19th century so it's not unreasonable to guess that the Loveless boys moved from the sticks to find work. On seeing you response, I made a search for GRO indexes to BMD on the website FreeBMD, searching on your gt. grandfather and grandfather names which successfully returned a possible birth and marriage index for Francis Harold Loveless and a possible birth index for your grandfather, Percival Roland Loveless. It is also possible to retrieve an index for a possible wife for Frances (2 choices available). Let me know if you want the detail (you may want the fun of searching for yourself). At one time my gran (Evelyn Ethel Loveless aka Ethel) lived with her spouse and children in several locations in Bournemouth, one of these being Markham Rd, Charminster not far from Alma Road. Their last home was adjacent to Normans Garage in Walisdown opposite the recreation ground (this has long been knocked down and used as extra forecourt for the garage). Also Rob, if you know Alma Road, you may be familiar with these landmarks, Winton Rec, the Continental Cinema (now knocked down) and Stokewood Rd Swimming Baths (the old wash rooms). Anyway goodbye for now, hope to hear from you or anyone else on the list who has any info on the Loveless families in Bournmouth 1890 onwards who have Robert Loveless and Esther Sansom as their ancestors. 2. Gary Chaffey
    3. Hello Rob, I have just seen your email on the Tolpuddle list and was wondering if you have come across a Thomas Loveless b1912. The reason I ask is my grandfather Thomas Loveless lived in Christchurch and I believe Winton for a while. Until this mail I haven't come across many Loveless' in the Winton and Bournemouth area at all. If you have any info I would like to hear from you. Regards Gary Chaffey P.S. I have got my line back to early 1800s but have then hit a brick wall with a Joseph Loveless b early 1800s. Not a million miles away from Malcolm's Boscombe address below? This has become a project now for me to give me Mum something as a finished article & also so my children can see their history. To that end, any help as to how I go about this, what software is going to be best etc, is going to be very gratefully accepted. looking forward to your replies Rob -----Original Message----- From: eye [mailto:eye22@bigpond.com] Sent: 11 February 2004 11:54 To: TOLPUDDLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TOL] Loveless of Tolpuddle Hi Malcolm The children I have for Robert Loveless and Esther Samson (have seen her also as Ellen Samson) are Amelia Jane Bapt 15 Jan 1865 James Samson Loveless Bapt 12 Apr 1867 Tolpuddle Alice Laura Loveless I have two dates for Alice perhaps the first is her birth, perhaps one is wrong B 25 Jul 1869. & Bapt 15 Jan 1870 Francis Harold Bapt 17 Aug 1878 Tolpuddle William H Bapt 1877 I presume that all the children would have been baptised in Tolpuddle, I have record of the family living in Moreton Dorset in one of the census's, I think it is 1871, will check. Hey, Rob... Check out "The Master Genealogist" from WhollyGenes Software. Here's the website: http://www.whollygenes.com/tmg5.htm The release of version 5 was just made, after a long wait of several years. It's a great program, but it may take some time to learn many of the advanced features. But it is definitely the best program I have ever used! Records of these baptisms are in the Tolpuddle Bishops Transcripts, in the records full names of the both parents are listed, Robert Loveless and Esther Samson, Robert's occupation is listed as a Mason.. Robert Loveless Bapt 3 Mar 1840 is the son of Edward Loveless and Ann Bartlett. As you know this is also Donna's family tree and Jackie Keck's (Hi girls!!) and if anyone else, sorry I forget. Edward is the son of William Loveless and Jane Hoare. William is the son of John Loveless and Judith Hibbs and this is your connection to the Tolpuddle Martyrs, John is the Uncle of George and James the TM's, he is the brother of Thomas Loveless TM Dad. Is that clear as mud or what:-))) Please correct me if I got that wrong girls, other than the dates, I ran it off my head. So Malcolm to be sure that your granny Evelyn Ethel May Loveless is the daughter of James Samson Loveless shouldn't be hard. You would get that from her birth certificate. I have not typed out the whole tree because as you said Donna has it on the net. I hope this is a help to you.
