    3. Ann - have not been able to make a connection to the Tolpuddle Martyrs from your family tree. Do you have any documentation -ie marriage records or baptismal for instance. Do you know where Elizabeth Loveless was born? Her fahter William Loveless - where was he born? If he was the parish clerk for Leigh, Dorset perhaps he was born or at least raised in Leigh, Dorset. Perhaps with a more detailed history we will be able to track down the mystery. 3. Martin Are you aware you can now order certificates from the GRO on-line from abroad? Donna, our administrator, ordered one recently and I'm sure she will be able to confirm it was not that expensive and quite easy to arrange. If you purchases the certificate for William Henry's marriage, this should give you his father's name which I'm sure will help you on your way. 2. Hi. My husband has always been told that he was related to one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs --but we cannot find the connection. His father was Reginald Matthews (b.1905) He married Kathleen Watts His grandfather was Thomas Matthews,he married Elizabeth Loveless(b.9/4/1867) Her father was William Loveless( b.1829---parish clerk Leigh, dorset). He married Judith Jeans (b. 1827).The father of William was Joshua Loveless,(b.1791-d.1865.he was parish clerk 1841 census) He married Ann(b.1796-d.1852). If anyone could make a connection with a Tolpuddle Martyr ,that would be great! Ann Matthews.

    1. LOVELESS in Hampshire
    2. Martin Willcocks
    3. Hi All, Welcome Jon and Andrew. Since we have new members, I'd like to take the opportunity to re-post my Hampshire LOVELESS names. I'd greatly appreciate any information that could help me find their connections and ancestry. 1. William Henry LOVELESS, b. abt. 1854, aboard HMS Terror in 1881, age 27, M, occ. Capt. Qr. Deck, (sex transcribed as 'F' though obviously an error,) b. Portsea, Hampshire, England. + Mary J(ane) MAY, b. abt. 1857, at 15 Malta Rd., Portsea, Hampshire, England, age 24, M, occ: seaman's wife, b. Southsea, Hampshire. At same address in 1881: Grace MAY, chr. 12 Jun 1859 St. Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire, England, sister, age 22, U, occ. dressmaker, b. Southsea, Hampshire, England. (known to be my great-aunt.) William Henry LOVELESS, son, b. Sep Qtr 1876, Portsea, Hampshire, England 2b 475, age 5, U, scholar, b. Southsea, Hampshire, England. Mary G. LOVELESS, daur., b. Jun Qtr 1880, Portsea, Hampshire, England, 2b 523, age 1, U, b. Southsea, Hampshire, England, d. Mar Qtr 1888, Portsea, Hampshire, England 2n 305, age 7. Possible marriage of William H. LOVELESS (jr.) Marriages Dec 1901: William Henry LOVELESS Portsmouth 2b 1068, to one of: Ada May COUSINS or Maude WEBB. Cousins is more likely since there is a middle name Cousins in my family, suggesting a Cousins relation. Possible child of this marriage: Births Dec 1908 William Henry V LOVELESS, Portsmouth 2b 367 Areas of research that have proved difficult: FreeBMD is incomplete, and shows no births yet for William Henry LOVELESS (sr.) which would be about 1854. If anyone with access to 1837online could look him up this would be helpful, as I also have no baptism for him, and no idea who his parents were, nor any siblings. Marriages Dec 1875: LOVELESS, William Henry and MAY, Mary Jane, Portsea, Hampshire 2b 841. This confirms their marriage and Mary's middle name Jane. Both birth and death of their daughter confirms her name was May Grace LOVELESS, not Mary G as in the 1881 census. I have no parish records for Portsea that show either Mary Jane MAY's baptism, nor her marriage to William Henry LOVELESS. I also have no baptism records for their children. If anyone has these people in their family line, and has obtained certificates, I would appreciate the details given on them. If they are in your family, and you have not obtained certificates, my plan is to buy a number of them in June-July when we are able to visit the FRC directly. I have a few census details of possibly related Hampshire LOVELESS families, there were probably three or four families in the Portsea area in the 1880-1901 period, but as I don't know William Henry's parentage, I don't know in what way they may be related. Nobody on the TOLPUDDLE, LOVELESS or LOVELACE lists has yet come up with any relationship to these Hampshire families. I have no known connection to Dorset or U.S. LOVELESS families. This is not a brick wall, rather a 6 ft. stone wall!!! Any help appreciated Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.

    1. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
    2. Donna King
    3. Good day all. I would like to welcome some new members to the Tolpuddle Mailing List - Jon Loveless and Andrew M. Rose who have recently subscribed to our list. Welcome Jon and Andrew. Welcome also to those others who have joined in the past month or so. I have recently dealt with a loss of a family member and haven't been as efficient as I would of liked to be. I would like to remind everyone that although the Tolpuddle List is primarily for the research of the LOVELESS/LOVELACE surname in Canada, England, Austrailia, it is also for research of connecting surnames and/or the parish of Tolpuddle and Tolpuddle Martyrs. Funnies are allowed on this list as we are a small and connected list and many of us have become good friends through our research, sharing of trials, tribulations and yes our successes in life and in family history. I'm sure Jon and Andrew that you will find the members of this list to be very friendly and helpful. Please feel free to post your family tree and your search requests. Who knows you might find some family connections and or at least advice on where next to turn in your family research. I would also like to announce that we now have 51 members currently subscribed. Way to go!! I would like to wish everyone on this list peace, prosperity and good health for 2005. Donna King Tolpuddle List Manager emily04@rogers.com P.S. I'm also the Online Parish Clerk for Tolpuddle and am actively searching for records of births, marriages, deaths etc of the parish of Tolpuddle.

    3. Donna If I put my other (old) e-mail address into Google it produces many hits on the Tolpuddle Archives. It's no wonder that I get so much SPAM on this address when it is generally available to all to use in such a way. Do you know of any way that these e-mail addresses can be removed to hopefully reduce the incidence of SPAM mail? I haven't checked other contributors e-mail addresses but I'm sure the same applies to them as well. Whilst I don't use this address as my main address any more it is not that critical, but if my new address eventually appears on the archives then I feel the same thing may happen to this one as well. When time permits, is there a chance you can have a look at this and see if there is any way this can be changed. Regards Howard

    3. Martin - thank you for your email and kind words. I was glad that I was able to see and have some time with mom. She is still hanging in there and may last a few months more. One doesn't know when one will leave this good earth but at least she is not afraid and feels that she has had a good life and wants us to go on with our lives. I too can't feel too much sadness as I can feel her peace and am at peace with my god also. Must run for now. Thanks once again for your friendship on the list, Donna ----- Original Message ----- From: "Martin Willcocks" <martinwill2@comcast.net> To: <TOLPUDDLE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 2004 12:03 PM Subject: [TOL] Re: TOLPUDDLE-D Digest V04 #94 > Hi Donna: > > I'd just like to add my prayers to the list. 3. Hi Donna: I'd just like to add my prayers to the list. My mother died eighteen years ago, but time marches on for all of us, and my wife's parents are now in their upper eighties. When my mother had a stroke, I found out my passport needed to be renewed and it took the best part of a week even though there was a most helpful British Consulate in Los Angeles then. I managed to visit her the afternoon before she died, and I know she was pleased that I had come; even though she was allegedly in a coma, she responded to my presence. Sincere regards, and best wishes for Christmas to you and yours Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
