Hello from the frozen north, Minneapolis, Minnesota Wendy, do you remember when you gave me the name of the Canadian who wrote an article on the Tolpuddle Martyrs, and was said to have been a descendant? I believe he had responded to you but did not give you info re: Loveless, but only told of his visit to Tolpuddle and his continuing research on Trade Union History. I wrote him, but never received a response. Did he ever correspond with you? I am going to try again. His name is: Edward E. C. Beaven, of Tottenham, Ontario. I will let everyone know if he lends any clues! Linda Banks

-----Original Message----- From: LaCoe <[email protected]> >Why are they Tolpuddle Martyrs? Do you have some history on it >Sandra LaCoe Sandra, There is an article on the Lovelace web site with a bit of information that might help and I think a couple of links. It is: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/tolpuddle.htm I have other articles in past newsletters; I'm trying to figure out whether it's better to scan the newsletters as images (which usually makes the text hard to read) or invest in a new program that will make it easy to transfer the format of the newsletter articles to the website. Right now, it would take eight hours to get one newsletter up to read. Not worth it! Wendy
Sandra if you type Tolpuddle Martyr into your puter there is quite a lot on their history. I notice that Donna has a good lot about them on her wedsite. Irene, Yes, you have the right family. I checked all the children with the census for 1850 and 1860 Damscus Township,Wayne County PA. They all match. Larry Glatz has been writing me the following is his information from . "Regarding the citation, my Aunt Alice included it in a typescript of family info, which she atributed to the Matthews volume. Her quotation was: "... James Lovelass was born in Dorsetshire, England, November 21, 1816, and in 1833 came to the United States with his parents William and Mary Lovelass, the vessel on which they sailed being six weeks in crossing from Liverpool to New York. Locating in Wayne County, PA., William Lovelass built the first frame house in his locality. He died at the extreme old age of ninety-two years and his wife at the age of sixty. In their family were five children: namely Isaac, Mary (deceased), John, Robert and James." Unfortunately, I do not have the page reference, but the information appeared in the section relating to my great grandfather, Frederick Tegeler, who married James's daughter, Florence. Knowing how these mid-19th century "biographies" were put together, I assume that the actual information came (word of mouth) from Florence, or someone else in the family. As such, it should be taken with a bit of a grain of salt. The names of the children and their order of listing match up just about exactly with the general Lovelass info I have from other sources. However, just as there may have been two James Lovelasses of about the same age in the county at about the same time, why not two Isaac's as well? I have not really read the censuses in enough detail to speculate on this, and I suspect that you probably have a lot more info than I do.I understand from Larry Glatz that Mary died that is why she was not found.Mathews'History of Wayne, Pike and Monroe Counties The following is found in the: the Commemorative Biographical Record Research copied by Ann O'Hara Wayne County Historical Society: "He [Isaac Jr.] is a native of Wayne county, born December 23, 1837, near Honesdale, son of Isaac and Annie (Mills) Lovelass, who were natives of Beaminster, Dorsetshire, England, and were reared and married in the country of their birth. "On coming to this country, Isaac Lovelass and his young wife lived for a time in Philadelphia, Penn., removing thence to Wayne county and locating in Damascus township, where he had made a purchase of land. He made various improvements on the place, and they resided there until 1835, when he sold and removed to Oregon township, again investing in real estate. During his residence here he followed the trade of carpenter and boat-builder, continuing thus until 1847, in which year he sold his place in Oregon township and went to Wisconsin, where he bought land with the intention of establishing a new home in that State. While returning to Pennsylvania for his family, however, he was taken sick, and he died soon after reaching his destination, in September, 1847. He left a wife and seven children, viz.: Mary, born May 11, 1832 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, married George Sheard, of Damascus, three children being born to this union - Ellsworth A., George W. and Mary Alice (Mrs. Joseph Burcher, of Damascus); Mr. and Mrs. Sheard live on his farm and he is engaged in shoemaking. John, born November 23, 1833, in Philadelphia, married for his first wife Miss Charlotte Gavitt, of Wayne county, who died leaving a large family, and he subsequently wedded Mrs. Murrilla Matthews, of Lebanon, by whom he has no children; they reside in Damascus. Emily, born July 10, 1836, in Damascus, is the wife of David Orr, of Damascus, and they live on a farm in that township; they have had two children - William D., who is married, and Eliza J., Mrs. A. E. Sisson, of Wayne county. Abigail, born December 29, 1840, in Oregon, is married to Simeon Skinner, of Damascus, and has one son, Wellington. Catherine, born March 4, 1845, in Oregon, became the wife of H. M. Stanton, of Damascus, and they now live at Long Branch, N. J., where he follows contracting and building; they have two daughters - Harriet and Florence, both at home. Annie, born April 15, 1847, on the old homestead, is the widow of Mr. Ayers, of Brooklyn, and has one daughter, Ethel." It would appear from the above that my hunch was correct, and that Issac and "Annie" came from England to Halifax, thence to Philadelphia, thence to Damascus township, thence to Oregon township, and finally almost made it to Wisconsin, though only Isaac ever actually went there. It's likely that you've not had much luck in Nova Scotia because they only stayed long enough to have their first baby there, but as I noted earlier, there should be ship's records for that era. No Irene I think its a calling or a gift. Perhaps a halo of the month award or something like that. I think I'm still in shock. I thought I might have a chance to have my ancestors be related to the Martyrs but thought it might be just a pipe dream. Thanks once again. Hi folks, Just so you know, the way to post to this list is to send an e-mail to [email protected] Several of you have sent me personal e-mails about various lines and have asked questions; it's very difficult for me to answer all the e-mails and will be much more productive with discussions if you post these questions through the list so that others have a shot at contributing. My data on this group of Lovelesses and Lovelaces is very limited. Please don't sit back and wait; post your data so folks can help! There are some new subscribers that I haven't corresponded with in the past; I hope you all will post your information even if you think others have that data. This is an all new place to post and archive; the more you put up here in the way of questions and information, the more feedback you'll get. Since we're relatively small, I'll post the e-mail addresses of all the subscribers if you all agree that's OK. If anyone does _not_ want others to know they are here, please e-mail me privately within the next 48 hours. Thanks! I saw a post on a list from an Australian researcher that had a Lovelace listing and queried about the information. Below is her response. She sent the scanned photo, too; I'll get it up on the website later today (I hope) and let you know the address. W. Hi Wendy, No, not a LOVELACE researcher. The posting was part of a few listing names which appeared in a book "The All-Australia Memorial, History, Heroes and Helpers". The compilers and publishers were British-Australasian Publishing Service. The book was published as a Memorial to those who lost their lives in WW1. The names appear in Part 2, a section titled "Australia's Fighting Families." Of course, not all the personal who lost their lives are entered. There are about a 1,000 names. They apparently were to publish extra booklets later and were asking for people to make submissions. The book came out about 1920. The entry for James LOVELACE reads: LOVELACE, James L., A.B., T.B.D. "Torrens" [late "Warrego" and "Huon"] son of Mr and Mrs H.E. Lovelace, Rozelle, born Rozelle, July 31, 1900; educated Rozelle;enlisted in Navy June 1914; embarked October 11, 1915. War Service: High Seas. As the photograph of James is with H. Slattery I have included his details as well. SLATTERY, Henry, 1st Class Stoker, H.M.A.S. "Sydney" [late "Brisbane"]; son of Mr R.J. and Mrs M.J. Slattery, Victoria; born Carlton [Vic] March 26, 1893; educated Victoria; engineer; enlisted 1914, embarked Aug. 1914. War Service: High Seas, Port Said, Constantinople, Egypt, Mediterranean and North Seas; also three years prior to outbreak of War. Rozelle is a suburb of Sydney and Carlton is a suburb of Melbourne. There is nothing to indicate who is who in the photograph but James's name comes before Henry's. Regards, Marilyn QLD, Australia

Earlier in 1998, The Learning Company purchased Mindscape (producer of Family Tree Creator) and Broderbund (producer of Family Tree Maker), and then in December it acquired Palladium Interactive (producer of Ultimate Family Tree). What does this mean to genealogists? It appears Mattel is going to wind up with all of the genealogy toys, so to speak -- owning the major popular genealogy software programs and the companies that produce most of the genealogy CDs. Additionally, the "Wall Street Journal" in its December 17, 1998, issue announced that CMG Information Services, Inc., will invest $10 million in Ancestry for a 30 percent stake in that company. CMG is betting that genealogy is about to make a big breakthrough on the Web. However, the CMG investors are not talking about helping you find that long-lost ancestor when they refer to a "breakthrough." They mean making money. Where is all this going in 1999? I have as much trouble peering into the future as I do digging up the past, but it appears to me that the costs of computer genealogy (software and CDs) are likely to increase. Moreover, the price of admission to many genealogy sources on the Web is probably going to go up. Many surfers are already paying $5 to $10 per month ($60-$120 annually) to have access to various sources or finding aids. Many onliners are discovering their "free" Web space or e-mail account comes with hidden prices -- loaded with ads and their names and e-mail addresses sold to cyber-merchants. RootsWeb is one of the "Top 25" or so sites on the Internet and continues to swim against the tide by providing free access to huge amounts of genealogical data. Yet currently less than three percent of its users are providing financial support. If RootsWeb users contributed only $2-$3 per month ($24 to $36 annually) there would be adequate financing to maintain and build an incredible genealogical resource. If they don't, the future of Internet genealogy looks expensive. * * * * * DONATIONS TO HELP SUPPORT ROOTSWEB ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. According to the memoirs of James Heberley (b 1809) his father, John, was captured by a Privateer in the English Channel in the year 1790. He was originally from Wurrtemberg and was presumably trying to emigrate to either England or the USA. The other clue that James gives is that his father was taken prisoner by his "Grandfather" which is a little strange. John Heberley was married to Elizabeth CURTIS in 1809 in Wyke Regis. Elizabeth was the daughter of James CURTIS and Ann SMITH - possibly from the Isle of Wight. The only other name that I have not yet found a positive connection with is LOVELACE, who may be the owner or master of the privateer. Incidentally, I am related to Captain Joseph Hebley who used to live on Cove Street, and who was one of the oldest sea captains who still remembered working the old sailing ships. Any help with the above would be appreciated. I've been searching some of the English and Canadian Rootsweb lists for any posts on Lovelace and Loveless. The Kent-Eng list is fairly new; it had less than 100 posts in 1998. Here is the only Lovelace post; anyone familiar with the Lovelace and Moorcraft connection?
