Irene and all, I think we all suffer from not knowing enough about other country's geography. The two letter abbreviations for that states are not necessarily used universally internationally. American's are taught geography rather in a self-centered way; we often don't know where some of the Canadian provinces or the English references are. I don't know for sure where to get a listing of the states abbreviations, Irene, but on our Lovelxxx web site, there is a map with the two letter abbreviations with the state spelled out in full below. The address is: http://www.iredell.net/us_map.htm. You can click on one or the other to find the corresponding reference. We don't have any international listings yet, though. Nova Scotia is in Canada. I'm not as familiar with Canadian cities and provinces, but those should be fairly easy to obtain from an atlas or even encyclopedia reference. It might help us here in our posts to spell out more specifically the locations of our references since we're all so geographically diverse. Please note that Rootsweb is working on their servers this weekend and that our web site might be difficult to access for a couple days. Stop back to check it out, though! W. Irene. I'm confused. I don't see a John Loveless born 1751 on this email. My John married Judith Hibbs. I see a Thomas born 1762, parents John and Thomasina Loveless on the email. Is my John Loveless, who is supposed to be the uncle of George and James brother to Thomas Loveless. To quote an english saying, "By George, I think I've got it." Was a bit slow on the uptake there. Thanks for all the information. Just for my records, the information you have sent me earlier is also from the parish records right? Hi Wendy Thanks for the list of emails, there are more folk in here than I expected. Hello all!!!!! Shy lot aren't they???? >Percy Loveless was included in a pedigree done in 1988 by C. Bromley So who is C Bromley????? that >was sent to Alton Loveless who then sent it to me. Is Alton in here Wendy? He included this: >CAUTION: ATTACHMENT QUESTIONABLE OF ROBERT TO JAMES AND THOMAS! Yes it was Robert that I was questioning. Robert the brother of George and James TM's was bapt 22/2/1800. Just under Robert it has Charles Loveless b abt 1835 who married Eliza Smith. Are they saying that Charles is Robert's son? Robert also migrated to Canada and he shows up on the 1871 census as a store keeper in Mid London Canada, age 71. In the info by Bromley the descendents look like they stayed in England or maybe just Charles did. I'll send this to my Tolpuddle pal and he will tell us about Charles. Do you have anything on this Robert Wendy, I don't have a wife or children for Robert so Charles would be a start. Robert died in 1883 in Canada. >The rest >of that outline was sent to me by you, I believe. Oh yes, it did look a bit familiar. ;-) >Mr. Bromley believed >that his ancestor, Robert b. abt. 1810, was a brother to James and Thomas >but had not proven that fact. Has anyone seen anything else done by Mr. >Bromley over the years? Like most people he hasn't got all the siblings of George and James, so here a present, this is the family of George and James as sent to me by my pal in Tolpuddle and taken straight from the church register. Hi all. Can't help with particulars as I don't have anything on my Lovelesses emigrating from England at this point but who knows what the future will bring. I think, however, that R.I. is perhaps Rhode Island. I believe that the States operate under a two-letter code for their States. Canada just went to two letters in the past couple of years. BC - British Columbia AB - Alberta SK - Saskatchewan MB - Manitoba ON - Ontario QC - Quebec NB - New Brunswick NS - Nova Scotia ? - Prince Edward Island ? - Newfoundland ? - Labrador The above provinces are in order from West to East. I can't remember off the top of my head, probably because I have had no call to use them, what the new abbr are for Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Labrador. They used to be PEI, NFLD, and LAB respectively. Perhaps Sandra knows what they are? I have two maps of England on my wall of my office so I can get a picture of the relationship of the places where my ancestors come from. I'm beginning to think, however, I need to have a map of the world so I can tell where all my new friends are living. This information on Lovelesses from this site: http://www.phaenom.com/spracklen/research.htm . Tolpuddle Martyrs George and James Loveless, Thomas and John Stanfield, James Brine, and James Hammet. Tolpuddle is a small village in Dorset. These men were really the 'founders' of the Trade Union movement. In 1834, six agricultural labourers were sentenced to seven years' transportation to Australia for administering illegal oaths while founding a trade union. They all were granted a free pardon in 1836. In 1837 George Loveless wrote 'The Victims of Whiggery'. George Loveless was Knighted before he left England for London, Ontario Canada. Elizabeth (Betsy) Snook Spracklen(Daughter of Joseph and Maraget Snook Spracklen) born: September 16, 1798 in Dewlish England. Married George Loveless (Born 1797 in Dorchester England, died 1874 in London Ontario Canada) in 1820 in Dewlish England., Betsy died 1868 in London Ontario Canada. Thomas and James Stanfield, James Brine (Married Elizabeth Stanfield), and George and Betsy relocated to London Ontario after they returned from transportation in 1837 and had worked a leased farm in Essex for 6 years. This would put them in London Ontario as early as 1843. The Loveless China Shop in London, Ontario - which was still open in 1963 - was established in 1852 or 1854. Children (6): Diane Loveless, James Loveless, William Loveless, George Loveless (born: 1824), Tom Loveless (born: 1825), and Robert Loveless (born: 1827). Guess - they were all born in England prior to 1843 move to London Ontario Canada. W. From: martin hipperson <[email protected]> To: Donna King <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, January 14, 1999 6:32 AM Subject: John Loveless Hello Donna, Would John Loveless be Flax Dresser of Bridport? George Loveless (1797 - 1874) was certainly his brother. George was arrested aged 37years; he was married to Elizabeth with 3 children, and on conviction was sent to Van Diemen's land in the "William Metcalfe" on 25th May 1834. He eventually returned to England on board the "Eveline" to London 13th June 1837; but eventually settled in Siloam, Ontario where he worked on a farm. He died there in 1874, and is buried there. As to James Loveless(1808- ?) his brother. He was 25yrs old at time of his arrest; married to Sarah with two children. He was sent to New South Wales, and left England on board the "Surrey" on 11th April 1834; and returned to Plymouth in the "John Barry" on March 17th 1838. He also emigrated to Canada and settled at Siloam Ontario. I believe thats near London, Ontario. Some of the other Tolpuddle Martyrs also emigrated to this area. If you haven't seen an excellent book called "The Book of the Martyrs of Tolpuddle 1834 - 1934) published by the Trades Union Congress General Council (London, England) in 1934 to mark the Centenary of the Dorsetshire labourers being transported for forming a trade union...then I suggest you try to obtain a copy. I have a copy. It is full of information, photographs, pictures, letters and runs to about 230 pages. I don't know if it was ever reprinted. My father was given the book as prize many many years ago from his Union for articles he wrote concerning the trade union movement. But I have also met another descendent of the Loveless family; and visited the village itself and the the Museum there to the Martyrs. The Reverend Loveless was Vicar of Great Melton, Norfolk about 1980/2 when I visited him to see the Parish Registers. He told me of his connection to the Martyrs, and he may still be around. If you can't get hold of a copy of the book I will try to send you relevant bits from the book, although really the book should be seen as a whole. Letter from George Loveless (from the book, in his hand) to his brother James. Van Diemens Land, September 10th 1834 We left Portsmouth Sunday May 25th about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and arrived safe in this harbour Wednesday September 3rd, a voyage of 101 days. I was examined before the mgistrates yesterday, who with threatening me with punishment urged me to tell them by what sign the "Trade Union" could assemble in bodies all over the Kingdom at once. I know of no such sign and therefore cannot tell--fear not brother he that is for me is more than all that is against me. We expect to go on shore tomorrow or the day after, then there will be a prospect thank God of being separated from the company I have been in the last seventeen weeks. George Loveless Hope some of this will be of use to you. Regards, Martin
The following e-mail addresses are currently subscribed to this list. I'd be happy to introduce those that I know, but I'd rather you all introduced yourselves and told us your family lines. I know some of you don't have proven English, Canadian, New Zealand, or Australian roots and some have already posted their lines. If any of you have data that doesn't pertain to your line that you've run across while researching, please post as Irene has done so that all may benefit. Thanks for joining us! Hi Joyce, This list is just getting started, and so far, I think most of the people here are Loveless and Lovelace descendants; many of the Tolpuddle Martyrs James and George Loveless. Our list is so new that it's description isn't up yet. We haven't discussed any other Tolpuddle research, though that certainly is an option. This list is an offshoot of the Lovelace surname list designed to allow those with non-American roots to discuss their lines without having to wade through all the other Lovelxxx family messages. You can search the archives of the list by going to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and searching under the Tolpuddle list. -----Original Message----- From: Irene Howgate <[email protected]> >Hello all! >This is a very quite mailing list. Hi Irene, I am sorry that I've been neglectful here; because of time off during the holidays, I have worked a lot more and have had difficulty finding time to devote to this project. I keep hoping the rest of you will jump in and share; as I've said before, I don't have much original data on these lines and hope to learn more from all of you. Can those of you in countries other than the US or those who have researched in other countries tell us about what sources you use and how we may be able to help you from here? >Wendy are you still going to tell us all who else is on this mailing list. Yes, I'll get right to that today since nobody has objected. >I for one would like to know how many are in here. >Also Wendy you sent me the tree a while back (I am pasting at the bottom) >can you tell me who sent it to you. Percy Loveless was included in a pedigree done in 1988 by C. Bromley that was sent to Alton Loveless who then sent it to me. He included this: CAUTION: ATTACHMENT QUESTIONABLE OF ROBERT TO JAMES AND THOMAS! The rest of that outline was sent to me by you, I believe. Mr. Bromley believed that his ancestor, Robert b. abt. 1810, was a brother to James and Thomas but had not proven that fact. Has anyone seen anything else done by Mr. Bromley over the years? Wendy
Lori isn't on our list, but those of you of the NS line might want to contact her. Hello all! This is a very quite mailing list. Wendy are you still going to tell us all who else is on this mailing list. I for one would like to know how many are in here. Also Wendy you sent me the tree a while back (I am pasting at the bottom) can you tell me who sent it to you. I'd like to know because the whole tree is in England also there are a lot of familiar names in this tree and at the very bottom there is a Percy Loveless and here in Victoria Australia there are two main lines of Loveless's, one mine and the other who all descend from a Percy Loveless who arrived in Australia in the early 1900's. I know you are overload girl but it would be a big help. You sent it to me on 17/8/1998 if that is any help. Hello, Tolpuddle Group.- Dont know if I belong here or not, since I have only been observing correspondence for a few days.( Are previous queries "ARCHIVED") I grew up in Yorkshire, of a father born in Southampton whose mother, Martha Hurst, was born in Osmington dorsets. according to 1881 census, yet I was told she came from Puddletown and even knew that the name was changed from Piddletown. Her parents were Robert Hurst, son of Henry Hurst, carpenter, and Mary Anne, dau. of Joseph Bishop. They married in Osmington, 29 May 1867. By 1891 census Mary Anne was obviously widowed, I found her married to a Mr Hooper. I may just belong in the Dorset group, but wanted to explore this Puddletown/Tolpuddle link, if such existed. Wendy I found an entry in my notes of William. William Loveless emigrated from Dorset in 1828 and settled in Scarborough East of Toronto Canada. Then we have Robert Fookes Loveless writing to his brother William Loveless Scarboro Toronto York Post Office Upper Canada North. I notice on the map that there are two places near Toronto Canada called Scarborough and Scarboro. I have to go back and find where I found the entry of William emigrating. I know, I know, I should always record where I found the info, but early in the piece I never recorded the source so this tells me I found this entry along time ago. Hi Linda I read with interest your post about your Emily Loveless working on The Isle of Wight. Do you know if she had Loveless relatives there? I have a photo of Isle of Wight Loveless's, it was sent to me from my dad's cousin Betty. Betty has for years had a penfriend of the name of Loveless who lives on the Isle of Wight, this penfriend sent a photo of her descendents and said (as we all do at some stage) that they descended from the Tolpuddle Loveless's. The names on the photo dated 21st August 1912 are Grandpa Loveless Grandma Loveless (second wife) Uncle Harry Loveless Aunty Rose Loveless Albert Loveless Elly Cleek? Rose Cahill (Loveless) Albert Hodge Florence Loveless (Hodge) Uncle Fred Cahill Uncle Harry James? Aunty Flo James?(Cahill) Rose's Sister. Tiny? James (child of Harry and Flo) Leonard James (child of Harry and Flo) Vera James (child of Harry and Flo) Norman Loveless (child of Harry and Rose) Cyril Loveless ( child of Harry and Rose) So the photo tells us that all these families are connected to the Loveless's of the Isle of Wight, except maybe Elly Creek. These people are not elderly, the adults are probably between the ages of 20 & 50 and not a bad looking bunch either. I have posted this information to the Isle of Wight mailing list with no success. I have written to the daughter of Betty's penfriend but haven't posted it yet because Betty said they have Christmas away from home. So Linda do you think that Emily could have had relatives on the Isle or maybe Way's are a relative? This could be interesting to follow. Irene At 20:50 11/01/99 EST, you wrote: >Hi. Linda, I never did hear more from the gentleman you mentioned. After giving you his address, I pretty much forgot about him. I'll dig it out and see if I can find out more. As I recall, he wasn't a Loveless descendant but was merely a researcher that had touched on the Tolpuddle happenings. He authored an article; I'm not sure which one. I'll be pulling those up in the next few weeks. I know I have at least three. Thanks for posting your line. If you have anything scanned or scannable that you'd like put on the website, please let me know so that others can see what you have and possibly make a connection. Irene, I know I still owe the post of William of Scarborough; I'm getting to that. Keep talking! W.
Hi. I am happy to have this more focused Loveless list, as I continue my search for Loveless overseas. I am following up on research that I got from my aunt, my mother's sister. In addition to word of mouth information, she paid a woman in England to do some research. My earliest Loveless: William Loveless, b. m. Ann Hickland b. children: Mary Ann b. 7/29/1828 John b. 4/4/1832 Charles b. 2/21/1836 Sara Jane b. 6/24/1838 Matilda b. 2/04/1841 Jane b. 10/8/1843 Emily b. 1/22/1846 William b. 8/20/1848 All born Alton Pancras Dorsetshire, England My gr grandmother, Emily, also worked on Isle of Wight, for family of B. W. and E. A. Way. (I got this info from extract of 1871 census returns). Emily emigrated to Iowa, US with George Knight, of PiddleTrenthide, Dorset, whom she married in Dubuque Iowa in 1877. In my aunts research, she communicated with a Jack Loveless, of Bristol, who gave her names: Charles son Jack Henry, son: John daughter Kate son: Jake son: Arthur Edward daughters Jan, Coleen William Gertrude Alice son: Reginald Heath daughter: Marjorie Heath Emily George son Hector I have beatiful picture of Alton Pancras church with cemetery. Also, memorial card for Matrilda Ann Loveless, noting she was interred in Family Grave, Brislington Cemetery, and one for John Loveless, who died 11/27/1893, and was interred in Holdenhurst Churchyard. I think I am going to have to go over there again myself and start digging around. I wish I could connect to one of the Williams I keep seeing around! Good luck, and wish me luck.
