The following is taken from an excellent book called "The Book of the Martyrs of Tolpuddle 1834 - 1934) published by the Trades Union Congress General Council (London, England) in 1934 to mark the Centenary of the Dorsetshire labourers being transported for forming a trade union... "Tolpuddle Martyrs that emigrated to Canada landed at New York, travelled from there by train to Buffalo; then by ship to Port Stanley. From there they trekked by ox-team to London, Ontario. George Loveless settled on a farm about 2miles from the site of the first Methodist Church at Siloam, London. This church, which he helped to build was burnt down, being a wooden frame building; the present church was erected on the same site. Although he moved later to another farm, he always resided at London, and lived there till his death 6th march 1874. To the end he was true to his principles and never disguised his outspoken views. He was equally firm in his adherence to his religious faith; and regularly held Bible classes at the house which he had built. He preserved his love of flowers and his garden was a blaze of colour, reagrded with good natured envy by his neighbours." Irene - I too have valuable contacts and would never do anything that would ruin the relationship. The above-mentioned information was sent to me from my Cannell contact. He is a retired librairan and full of all sorts of information. Take care, Donna
Wendy, I would consider taking over management of this list. That's if you can coach me through it. Let me know what's involved etc. Do I need anything special at my ISP. I will be moving residences late Feb, early Mar and maybe offline for a few days then etc. I would consider this work being my payback for all the splendid work others have done on our behalf. Anyways, let me know. Donna Earliest Loveless Ancestor - John Loveless born circa 1831 Tolpuddle, Dorset, England -----Original Message----- From: Wendy L. Congratulations, Irene, I know how you feel about your daughters acceptance...my older son just started aerospace engineering at the university following 6 yrs in Marine Corp. My youngest graduated from college in May! Phillipa, Welcome to you too! Wish I'd have started seriously looking into my family at your age...so many more would have been alive and able to have answered questions and told stories we may never now know... Don't be afraid to ask...everyone was new to this at some time and most of us will admit to still learning. It's been great to learn from those on the lists who have so much more experience! Hi Phillipa My name is Irene Welcome, You have to start by seeing the birth, marriage or death certificate of your grandfather, if he is still alive ask him can you take the details off his certificates. It is very important for you to talk to your elderly relatives. (That was my New Years resolution, to go back and talk to my living relatives, again). In your relatives you should find at least one who has the same interest or one who would know if any relatives have done any genealogy. Women are often the story tellers. On the certificate you will get the name of maybe names of your grandfathers parents. If you cannot get a look at the certificates then go to the St Catherine House register in your nearest library or Morman Family History Centre. On this register you can find your father and even your grandfather it will give you the numbers so that you can order the certificate. I know that you can look at very resent births, marriages and deaths in England because I have looked up my hubby on the St Catherine and he is still alive and kicking and in his early forties. Don't be afraid to ask for help, at the libraries they are very helpful. Stay with us Phillipa and we can guide you through what you need to get, remember there are no short cuts you have to go back step by step. There are some very knowledgable and friendly people on this list so be cheeky, jump in when you like and ask questions. I am in Victoria Australia Phillipa so we are nearly neighbours ;-) >From Irene a very proud mum at the moment with a very clever daughter who received her entrance to University to do Medical Science }}}}}}}} see my puffed chest! Hello Wendy, Yes, that is "my" Crandall that you saw listed in the Cemtery Finding Aid. I noted your request that I write to the appropriate Societies for further info. on those listed. I will do that for those that I don't know of but for most of them there is no need to write as I do know who they are and how they fit in the Ontario branches. For anyone who has questions on those listed in the Aid please contact me and I will give you what I have. Unfortunately, I have experienced some software trouble of a serious nature (I lost about 50% of my Ontario data). I have ordered The Master Genealogist (which comes highly recommended by Greg) and am waiting for it to arrive. Once here, I will be downloading what I was able to salvage and reloading what I lost and now only have on paper. This is a MAJOR setback, to say the least. In spite of that, until I am up and running properly I will still try to answer what I can. Susan Lovelace, Ontario

Hello from Minneapolis I wanted to add that I also have confusions sometimes about abbreviations for locations. I may know the US state abbrevations, but I was grateful to see the Canadian provinces' abbreviations. Maybe we can spell out the states, counties, provinces, countries, etc., so we can all know where we are talking about. I am excited to be in touch with English, Australian researchers. thanks for everyone's postings. This is a query from the web site. The headings below can be confusing. George was the oldest proven ancestor; Louisa Biles was his wife. Alton Loveless has researched the Loveless line for more than 30 years and has collected paper pedigrees sent in by various researchers. He hasn't got the time to follow up on all this data, so he was kind enough to forward boxes of his information to me and another researcher in the hope that we might be able to help. The only problem is that most of the information is dated prior to 1970 and is not documented and is difficult to follow-up with. It was most interesting for me to find in the box a pedigree of our own family done in my mother's handwriting; she didn't remember ever being contacted by Alton and when I showed her the pedigree, she was most surprised! > >Just under Robert it has Charles Loveless b abt 1835 who married Eliza >Smith. Thanks Wendy for the letter abbreviations info. Can I make a suggestion please? Is it possible when a new person arrives in this mailing list that we can all be told, so that we can all say "Hi" and make them feel welcome. I know that Greg does this and it might be far to much to ask because I know that you are flat chat now. I have mentioned before that I know of a lot of people that have popped into the Loveless/Lovelace list and been overwhelmed by the amount of Loveless/Lovelace information going through, then find it impossible to find a connection and go away feeling frustrated. This is the whole reason this list was set up and it would be good if we all knew each other. Please feel free to tell me to bug off if I am asking to much.
