Thank you so much for the proof 1850 and 1860 they can be found in Gibson County, Tennessee. William died in March 1870 so he is not on that census but his last wife (there could have been another) Algeritta "Ann" J. Watts is in 1870 with her 1 year old child and 10 year old Doceler, child by Nancy Owens........ The other possible wife is Ann Noell/Noel .........there is a marriage in Gibson Co for W. Mathis to Ann Noel in 1861 ..........this has to be proven if it really is our William.........I believe it is because of another child named Thomas Mathis that was listed as half brother on the 1880 census of Weakley County, Tn in the household of of Samuel J.
