Good afternoon list. My name is Michael Berryman Smith. I am researching (at the moment) only the surname Galloway in the region of TN that is Sumner, Davidson, Dickson, Wilson Counties. I am very stuck and would like to entertain yall with were I am at. (in short) I am researching John Galloway (1786 VA - according to 1850 census) who married Sally Barrett in Wilson Co on 9 May, 1810. I believe that John is possibly from a family of Galloways who were in Sumner as early as 1 JUNE 1780. That Galloway being John Galloway who recieved a preemption in 1782 for having been there prior to that date. Now thatvery same land was sold in 1808 by the sheriff to Hugh Barr (one can see H. Barr on map Dist 10 just east of Shiloh). My opth theory is based on a grant; Galloway, James (SN) 1795 Dist N. Bk C - 3 p.290 grant # 2436 warrent # 1704. "Assignee of Ansalom Tefton PVT" I think that Tefton may actually be TATOM. Now the curious thing here is an Absalom tatom recieved 2 different grants also in District N but each also goes on to say Stones River which is in Wilson Co. (The entries don't have a county code). This is very intersting because when my John Galloway married Sally Barrett (which incidentally the actual name on Bond is Barnett) an Andrew Robertson was the bondsman. In an effort to use that as a clue - I have researched this Andrew Robertson and discovered that he is a son of Hugh Robertson who himself is a nephew of Gen. James Robertson. Hugh aquired land that was in both Davidson and Wilson Counties and the deeds mention Stoners creek. (if I'm not mistaken Stoners creek shoots of Stones river). If District N listed above is in Sumner for Galloway, james is the same as the Dist.
