There is a book "Map Guide to the U. S. Federal Censuses" by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide. It gives the development of counties by the use of maps. Copies of the individual states from this book can be purchased from: American Genealogical Linding Library, P. O. Box 244, Bountiful, Ut, 84010. Genealogical libraries should have copies of this book. I have found that most often it is not on the shelves but, held back for the asking. So ask the librarian if they have the book. It is copied so often, it wears quickly.
