Hello migration lovers, I too want to know how they traveled. It is facinating. Wish we could find a ancestor who wrote in his diary. This lady seems to know a great amount of facts. She has been doing research for over 52 years. I actually thought she was on the TNWILSON site since she knows so much about the area and its genealogy and history. But she is a part of the other group in VA that I subsribe to. Here is what she said about how our people came from Virginia to TN, my ancestor came from Prince Edward County Virginia to Wilson Co., Tennessee in apporx 1809-1810. --- pat <mountainmama42@bresnan.net> wrote: > >> They went by wagon train over the Cumberland Gap >> then on the Cumberland >> river to middle TN and departed in Wilson or Sumner >> which the river divides. >> Pat >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Donna Fischer" <donna_fischer2003@yahoo.com> >> To: <vaprince@rootsweb.com> >> Sent: Friday, June 22, 2007 3:41 PM >> Subject: Re: [VAPRINCE] Donna and Roberta, I am in >> the twilight zone --- Donna Fischer <donna_fischer2003@yahoo.com> wrote: > I will get back to you the name of the person who > gave > me extensive info regarding migration from Va to Tn > > Donna > --- JENKINSRAWHIDE@aol.com wrote: > > > I descend from the lineage of William Harris > Jenkins > > and Jemima Huguley who > > came to the west Wilson Co. area from near > Fairfax, > > Virginia. My, Coats family came we believe from Maryland to South Carolina, then to Logan County KY and then on into TN...showing up in Smith County TN...my Baker family came from Virginia to South Carolina, then Logan County KY and then on to first Bedford County, TN then Wilson County TN...all in the mid to late 1700s...and by 1817 they were all in Callaway County MO or at least my family...some stayed in TN... So migration patterns may all be different with different families...my John Baker was in the Rev and fought some battles in SC...so I'm wondering if some of them might have been exposed to other locales and after the wars moved into some of those area...it is all sure interesting....:) as young men they might very well have rode horse back as well...and those with a family probably in wagons... Bernice, If you could possibly look up any info you can find on this lineage, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Claire Johnson I am searching for a John JOHNSON b 1755 in Amelia, VA and died after October 1836 in Smith County. Census records show several John JOHNSONs in Smith County in the early 1800s. Unconfirmed research says his wife was named Elizabeth and they married in 1776 in Rowan Co, NC. This section of NC appears to have eventually formed parts of TN. They seem to have had several children - including (but not limited to) Jesse, Samuel (this would be my line), James, Sarah, John A, and Phebe. All of the children appear to have been born in Rowan Co, NC before 1790. My line - Samuel JOHNSON shows to have married Sarah (or Sally) MOSS in Wilson County, TN around 1799. Children of the marriage would include Joseph C (b 1814), Samuel G (b 1807), James (b 1803), William B (b 1818), John P (b 1812), and several daughters. All children were born in Wilson County. I'd most appreciate any info on Samuel Johnson, Sally Moss, and their parents, etc. I have a fair amount (marriages, etc) on some of Samuel and Sarah's children. Thank you!!!! Any info you have - confirmations or speculation - are greatly appreciated!!! Thanks! Claire Johnson
Thanks Alan!! This confirms a few marriages I was unsure about. No mention of Samuel and Sarah though? Ah well. Thanks again! I found a Harriett B. Grant, daughter of Jubal Grant and Nancy Hightower in a family tree on Ancestry.com (Public Member Trees)married to Benjamin Clifton. All other references are "Brant". Brant January 17, 1844 Wilson County, Tennessee My problem is that I can find no one with the surname BRANT in Wilson County. Does anyone have access to the original record for this marriage who can check to see if the bride's last name could be mis-spelled. This name really has me stuck. Here's where I stand...I'm hoping someone can help confirm my theories or give me some new information. Joseph C JOHNSON, born 21 May 1814 in Wilson County, TN was the son of Samuel JOHNSON and Sarah (aka Sallie) MOSS. Sarah MOSS was the daughter of Thomas MOSS and Jemima (Barton?), an original settler of Barton's Creek, Wilson County in 1799-1800. She married Samuel JOHNSON in 1798 in Sumner County (as, at that point, Wilson County had not been created from Sumner Co.) Samuel JOHNSON is thought to be the son of John JOHNSON and Elizabeth. There is no real confirmation of this that I can find....yet. Samuel JOHNSON was born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1779. It appears that Samuel's family moved to Wilson County in the late 1790s. Samuel and Sarah had 9 children - James, Elizabeth Moss, Samuel G, Nancy, John P, Joseph C (my line), Mary C, William B, and Sarah B. All children were born in Lebanon, Wilson County. At one point, it was thought that Samuel JOHNSON was the child of Rev. Richard JOHNSON of Sumner County, but it seems that this cannot be proven, and little is known of that particular Samuel. One theory shows that Samuel died as a child. At some point, various children of Samuel's moved to Missouri, some stayed in Wilson County. Any help you can provide on Samuel's parents, or Sarah's, and their children other than Joseph C would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! Claire Johnson
