Hi Lisa! I know we talked some time ago about the Philip Jaco Jr. line who married 2nd Drucilla James. I've been working with a descendant of Philip Jr and his first wife, Jane Hubbard, who died and left him with a 4 yr old daughter on the 1870 census named Martha A. Jaco. When Philip Jaco Jr married Drucilla James, they appear on the 1880 census and Lilliard Jaco was just 10 months old... Lilliard Jaco of course was the son of Drucilla and he also signed the death record of his father. Do you know where they (Philip E.J.Jr Jaco & Drucilla) married? I would guess since her parents lived in Statesville, that they married there but I've not ever looked for the marriage record. I never found any pictures of these folks and wondered if you had? Hello, Looking at how those bottom two links are written I think I see the problem....one has a _ in front of the link and the other has a ( in front of the link. I was able to access the link this way. http://www.momemorylane.com/resources/spreadsheettricks.pdf She also talks about simple instructions on Excel. I know it sounds complex but this is a way to organize your found information and you will not duplicate yourself. And it really is a worksheet/spreadsheet. Just start with small information and you will begin to be comfortable with the sheets. Yes Donna, Cedar Grove Baptist Church still stands. It is a white clapboard (best I recall) church sitting on the slope of a hill on Belotes Ferry Road at its intersection with Cedar Grove Road. You can get there by either going out Hwy.213 North about 4 miles more or less and turning left (coming from Lebanon) or going out Coles Ferry Pike to the Cedar Grove Road and following it to the "T" intersection with Belotes Ferry. I live about 2-3 miles as the crow flies, from there, on Coles Ferry Pike. I do not know of any log cabins in the area, but I could be overlooking one, because I am more familiar with that intersection than I am the area on down Belotes Ferry. L.T. Another road well traveled to Fort Nashboro that have fed migration to Middle Tennessee from 1788-1797, was the Avery Trace. Although it headed directly to Dixon Springs and Carthage, and on to the bluffs of the Cumberland River at what is now Nashville, it would have brought NC people into the area and many "Sumner County" migrants became "Wilson County" settlers. North Carolina gave encouragement to settlement of Middle Tennessee by ordering, in 1787, that a road be "cut" from the south end of Clinch Mountain to Bean's "lick." Peter Avery, a long hunter in the Washington District, guided a small army of men who blazing of the trail through "The Wilderness" by marking trees and chopping out a path. This "trace" crossed Clinch River and entered the Cumberland Mountains. It climbed up Crab Orchard Mountain, passed "Standing Stone" (now Monterey), and followed a winding route by way of Fort Blount to Nashville. A number of immigrants came to the Cumberland Settlements via The Trace in 1788. Many historic figures such as Judge John McNairy and Andrew Jackson also used the route. At first, the "road" was only a trail of marked and bent trees leading to the Cumberland Settlements. For a number of years, only pack horses could follow the route. But about 1795, it began to be called a "wagon road." And as rough and winding as it was, it was the chief passage to the Cumberland territory until 1797. This road is generally known as the North Carolina Road, or Avery's Trace. In 1794, the territorial Legislature ordered a road to be built from Southwest Point (now Kingston) to the "settlements" on the Cumberland River in the Mero District. These settlements later became what is now Nashville. There are a number of sites about The Avery Trace online. And there may still be working association based in Tennessee. There was once a logo and promotion of it with a route map printed up as a brochure highlighting the route. You may still be able to obtain these at www.sumnercountytourism.com/maps.aspx Lorene Cook Lambert
Of course the census is not absolute proof, but he is the only James or James A. Powell in Wilson Co. that census year and his daughter is named Mary, the same as his mother You will have to contact the Wilson Co. Archives in Lebanon, TN to request a marriage lookup for James and his sisters. Marriages for those years are not posted online and, as far as I know, no book of marriages for those years has been published You can also request a lookup for a Will for Wiley Powell from the Archives. Hi Logan, I think a great way to break down those walls for our unknowns could be to work on studying the migration of our ancestors. As a interested group of persons some could put together a Excel spreadsheet to show all the people who migrated from various counties in Virginia (each person taking a county of their choice). Then sharing and comparing the information with others. I mention this because I went to a genealogy meeting last nite and I would like to pass along what she mentioned. Her program Spreadsheet 101: Excel The Genealogists' Underutilized Tool. A. Tracking B. Abstracting C. Analysis 1. Discover Family Relationships 2. Chain Migration With this chain migration I think we could find out a great deal. She claims it works to break down walls. It appears there was a chain migration from Prince Edward County to Wilson Co. Tennessee. We would also be able to put together family relationships from these migrations. Then we would be able to have a more exact time of migration. And as this presenter said there was back and forth movement by many people. The presenter for this program was Jeanne Larzalere Bloom, CG who is a full time professional researcher specializing in Illinois. Her email address for questions is jl-bloom@mindspring.com Here is one resource she has in her sheet: "Excel Spreadsheet Tricks" "Resources - http://www.momemoryland.com/resources/spreadsheettricks.pdf by, Pamela K. Boyer, CG, CGL, Memory Lane, Inc. If you or anyone else wants to work on a migration study let me know which county you will be doing. That way we can compare notes at times. Remind me Logan, I think you live in Lebanon, Tennessee now, if that is right, do you know of a (older)Cedar Grove Church in the vacinity of Lebanon area still standing and any old log cabins homes. I have been told it is still standing along with my ancestors home, but I am not sure where it is. Not sure since that name has become a common name for some other churches in Tennessee.
