Posted on: Wilson Co. Tn Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tn/Wilson/10853 Surname: WESTBROOK, PEYTON, EDDINS, WINFREY, MCFARLAND ------------------------- Looking for anyone researching the children of Louis WESTBROOK, ESQ and Sara 'Jane' PEYTON. Louis was from MS and a law student at Cumberland University when he married Sarah 'Jane' Peyton in 1857 in Wilson Co. Do not know Louis's parents or birth date, he died between 1863-1872. Sarah Jane (1838-1860) was the daughter of James Harvey PEYTON, ESQ and Nancy MCFARLAND. The children of Louis and Jane WESTBROOK were: 1. Nancy (1858-1923) who married Jordan EDDINS in 1876. (I know their children but would like to hear from anyone researching Nanny and Jordan EDDINS.) 2. Charles WESTBROOK born 1860 married Lucy WINFREY. The children of Charles and Lucy WESTBROOK were Leon, Charles and Erin. Would be most grateful for any info at all about Charles's family or descendants.
Please help fill in the gaps! My gggg grandfather Abijah RICE was born about 1797 in Cocke Co., TN, according to his War of 1812 service record. He was in Middle TN by 1813, and enlisted in KY in April that year in the 24th US Reg. Inf. (made up of men from TN and headquartered in Nashville) under Capt. J. A. Rogers. The NARA cannot find the muster rolls for the 24th US Reg. Inf.; I was hoping I might that Abijah had enlisted along with a family member on the same date. He later was in the First US Rifles under Capt. Edw. Wadsworth. I believe that Abijah had a brother named Jehu who was enumerated in Sumner Co. in 1820; he later went to Southern IL (Hamilton and Franklin Cos.) Abijah and Jehu were 1/2 Cherokee, and Jehu's daughter Rhoda is lsited on the Cherokee Emigration Rolls in 1832 (according to a descendant.) The names Abijah and Jehu are both Biblical, names of kings of Israel. In June of 1817, he married Jaley Ann BROWN in Wilson Co., TN. By 1819, according to circuit court records, they had gone on to MO Territory, settling in the areas of New Madrid and Cape Girardeau Cos. They always settled in known Indian camps, first one near present day Bloomfield, MO (a Shawnee/Delaware/Cherokee camp under Chief Wahepalathy) and then in Chilletecaux, named for the Delaware Chiefwho headed the village, near present day Kennett, MO. In 1837, 300 hundred Indians and only 2 white families were living in this village. My ancestors considered themselves Indian. Abijah and Jaley had children: William, b. @ 1816; James Pascal (my ggg grandfather), b. @ 1818; Margaret J.; Elizabeth Bellona; and Susan or Susannah M. (either Mary or Martha). Margaret J. married Henry L. JONES; Elizabeth B. married Sam HECTOR; Susan married Benjamin S. ENLOW. Abijah and Jaley wnet their separate ways about 1837, when she had a child by a full blooded Indian named John EAST. Abijah and his oldest son William are enumerated in Cedar Co., MO, in 1850, Newton Co., MO, in 1860, and William and his family only (presumably Abijah died between 1860 and 1870, in either Newton Co., MO, or Neosho, KS) in 1870 in Wilson Co., KS. There is some evidence that Abijah and William moved away from Jaley and the other children after 1832, and went to Western ARK or NE Indian Territory. A marriage for an Abiher REECE [sic] has been found in the 1830's in Crawford Co., ARK. Quite possibly, Abijah continued to move west with the Cherokee Old Settlers. I cannot find him in 1840 on any census. His son Pascal, my ggg grandfather, is living in McCracken Co., KY, in 1840 (now Ballard Co., KY). In 1850, he and wife Sarah (according to family history, known as WENOKIE) and their children are in Jefferson Co., IL. By 1860, they are back in Mississippi Co., ARK. 1870 on they are in the area of Hornersville, Dunklin Co., MO. Jaley was the daughter of Leonard BROWN (possibly James Leonard BROWN) and an Indian woman named WATHACAPEE. No idea what tribe; possibly Saponi/Tutelo as they were from VA. Guion Miller applications say Cherokee, but I have my suspicions. Jaley's brother Stephen (who served as bondsman for her marriage) is in Lawrence Co., TN in 1820 (two houses from a James BROWN old enough to be his father and Stephen's father-in-law Elias CRANFORD); Lauderdale Co, AL in 1830 (next to father in law Elias CRANFORD and undoubtedly a brother named Leonard BROWN); Wayne Co., TN, in 1840; Tishomingo Co., MS in 1845; Searcy and Izard Cos., ARK, 1850 on. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug Powers

BASS..... I am looking for information on the family of Thomas JONES and Polly BASS and particularly a John William Jones b. abt 1795 that I believe is their son?. He married Elizabeth Crawford or Bransford I think.. Does anyone have anything on this family. Who were the children of Thomas Jones and Polly BASS Jones.? Any help on this family would be appreciated.. Are they part of the family currently being discussed on this list? Thanks Vivian EAKES Hull - Hermitage TN email: vhull@aol.com
Judy: So, you have BASS photos! I am a BASS descendent, too. I descend from Theophilis BASS's (he died 1820's, Wilson County) daughter, Polly BASS, who married John EDWARDS. So you and I are cousins. Definitely do NOT store the images in plastic. Plastic traps moisture. Go to a good, professional camera shop and ask them about their preservation supplies. They should have some kind of acid-free cardboard envelopes you could store the tintypes in - something like the old paper photos used to come in where there was an opening in the front that framed the picture, and then you could fold over the top and shut it. If you cannot get that sort of thing where you live, you can call near where I live. That is: Clix Photographs & Savables 30 N. Williams Street Crystal Lake, IL 60014 815/455-1092 Explain that you have some tintypes to preserve. They may have some new items on the market. Good luck! Yes, Debbie, these must be tintypes. They are not in a frame or case, and they are printed on tin (as nearly as I, an amateur, can tell) I am so thrilled to have been given them by a wonderful Wilson County cousin! I will have copies made and put the originals in my safe deposit box. What type container should they be in for protection, plastic or cardboard? I can't put them in there just loose, they are other items in there (mostly papers). One is of Will J. Wood (1820-1889) who is my great-great-grandfather. He married Elizabeth Letitia Alexander Finney (ca 1826-ca 1893) and was the father of my great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Wood (1860-1941) who married Francis Harmon Bass on 20 Nov 1879. The other is of seven Bass brothers: Thomas Jefferson Bass (1847-1915) Oren Dewitt Bass (1861-1901) Joseph Wilson Bass (1849-1921) James Henry Bass (1851-1929) William Sommerfield Bass (1842-1891) Perry Solomon "Peb" Bass (1859-1928) Francis Harmon Bass (1857-1925) my great-grandfather. The picture is not dated but since Sion Benjamin (not pictured) had a child in 1879 and William Sommerfield died in 1891, I am going to speculate it was after S.B.'s death and before W.S.'s death, so it was likely between 1879 and 1891. Any other suggestions? Any input on the families of these Bass brothers? I don't have a scanner but once I have copies made perhaps I can have someone scan it for the Wilson County site.
