I have been a surveying technician for 14 years. NOWADAYS, on the waters of, literally means that. As water's edges change, so does the land that the person owns. The boundary of that line is not definite, it meanders. Trees were used as landmarks to mark peoples properties, nowadays they do not use them, but set iron pins in the ground or in concrete. Creeks can dry up, change courses, so in 200 years, they may no longer exist anymore. I hope this helps.

Bill: I'm no expert, but my experience is that the land did not actually have to sit on the banks of the river or creek. It would be in the area that would drain into those waters. I have found land in Kentucky that mentions the larger river nearby, but the land was actually near a creek that ran into the larger river. I have found a different reference in Kentucky that says "on the Pond River". It does not say "on the waters of the Pond River". I am working on the assumption that this land is actually on the river, but I don't know for certain yet. Your question is an interesting one. Hope others will respond with their experiences. Hello List, I have been looking at some early Wilson County deeds - between 1810 and 1840. Does anyone know whether it can be taken literally when the deed says something like: "ON THE WATERS OF"? I'm merely wondering if such a deed means that the land was right on the creek. The boundary descriptions don't actually mention the creek, and they often don't mention any neighbor's lines - they just mention what trees or stakes are at the corners of the tract and how long the sides of the tracts are. I would appreciate any insight that any of you would care to share. My gr. gr. gr. grandfather (Joseph TROUT) bought land from Jonas BRADLEY in 1813. The deed says that the tract consisted of 136 acres of land "conveyed to Jonas BRADLEY by John (initial) BLOUNT on the waters of Cedar Creek." The deed was witnessed by Joseph WEIR and James WEIR, so I'm thinking the land might have been near the community of "WEIR." Its location is shown on the 1907 map on the wall at the Wilson Co. Archives in Lebanon, TN. It must have been at or near what is now called "Taylorsvill." Does anyone know for sure? Thanks, Bill Troutt in Katy, TX

I am looking for info on Charles "C. T." Harris of Wilson Co., later of Henry Co., TN. He was probably around for most of the 19th century. I believe he was md. more than once. His daughter Margaret Amanda Harris married Adam A. Hope in Henry Co. in the 1850s. Her sister (Martha F.?) married Robert A. Carson of Henry Co. After the deaths of Martha (ca 1870?) and Adam (1864), Robert married Margaret and they moved to TX then AR wuth their blended family. When Margaret died, Robert had her place of birth, Wilson Co., TN, put on her tombstone. What was C.T.'s ancestry? Where did he come from? Are there any records of him and/or his ancestors in Wilson Co.? Thanks for any help! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sorry, Fred, there isn't anything further in Mr. Partlow's book regarding Parks Goodall. There are no listings for Burge, and only the one on Dockins. Wish I could be of more help, but these are not my people, so I don't know anything about them. If there are any other lookups I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask. Teresa and others, I don't know why this happens, but it does. I'm subscribed twice, using two different accounts, and it happens to me too. The only thing I know to do is, occasionally browse through the archives to see if anything relevant to your work has slipped by you. And new to me is the new Archive to our list. I wonder when this changed? Access the TNWILSON list messages at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p= <a href="http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=">TNWILSON_Archive< /A> Once there, click the appropriate categories to get to Wilson County, TN. I would post the direct link, but it is about a mile long and probably wouldn't appear intact if I did. Sorry for this inconvenience. I have been receiving my Wilson Co.-L in digest form, but there are answers to queries I have never seen. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing something somewhere? It can be very confusing when you don't know what the query was and you may have an answer for someone. Also, it would be very helpful to everyone (I think) if each one who posted an answer would put a small description of the query in their reply. Some of them are very confusing without any identification of the query or answer. Just a suggestion. Teresa twalker@iland.net

I second Teresa's idea. Some information on those responses to help the rest of us follow the train. And yes, I too get lots of replies to questions that aren't in my Wilson Co., mailbox. By the way - for those of you with perhaps connections to Collin Co., TX - I once again mention the following website which has transcriptions of old newspapers - and lots of surnames. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9473 Jan
I am not related to any of these families. I have Mr. Partlow's book and just did a lookup to help out. Sorry.
