HELP! I thought I had found my brick-wall gg-grandmother Susan Harris DALE, but I was mistaken. I have found far too many DALE and HARRIS connections that look like they're going to lead to a break-through, but only produce more questions and heightened frustration. Maybe someone on this list can help me sort out these DALE men and their HARRIS and PITTS connections. **** Charles C. DALE - according to an IGI record, Charles C. DALE was born in Worcester Co Maryland on 23 May 1819. All census records found so far do indicate that he was born in Maryland about 1819. He died in 1903 while visiting children in Missouri Charles C. DALE married Susan HARRIS in Wilson County, Tennessee, on 27 October 1838 (marriage bond signed). Charles C. DALE and Thomas SCOTT signed the marriage bond. The text of the bond indicated Susan HARRIS was a resident of Wilson County, but didn't indicate the residence of Charles DALE or Thomas SCOTT. Charles C. DALE married his second wife, Tamazine Finley JONES, Nov 1848 in Fannin Co TX . They were living in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, in 1850, then moved to Red River County, Texas. **** John P. (possibly Pitts) DALE, born 3 August 1816 in Maryland or Tennessee, depending on the census record used; died 14 April 1887 in Red River Co TX. John P. DALE married (1) Elizabeth R. HARRIS in Wilson County, Tennessee, on 24 June 1840. Charles DALE signed the marriage bond. Elizabeth was born ?? in ??, and died about 1846 in Red River Co TX. John P. and Elizabeth R. Harris DALE settled in Red River County, Texas. When Elizabeth died, John returned to Wilson County, Tennessee, and married (2) Adaline Howard CRADDOCK on 5 July 1847. He and his new wife then returned to Red River county. Adaline Howard Craddock DALE was born in ?? about 1825 and died in 1911 in Red River County, TX. **** Thomas H. DALE (b. ??, d. ??), said to be the brother of John P. DALE, also married a Susan HARRIS (b. ??, d. ??). According to an IGI record, Thomas H. DALE married S. HARRIS in Lamar County, Texas, on 6 July 1848. According to deed records, Thomas and Susan DALE were in Lamar Co in January 1855, signing an agreement to sell land. Lamar County adjoins Red River County. **** IGI records and ancestral files that may or may not be relevant contain the following data: Thomas DALE was born in DeKalb County, Tennessee, which adjoins Wilson County, in 1817. His father was William DALE; his mother was Anne PITTS. NOTE: Charles C. DALE named his first daughter Sarah "Sallie" Pitts DALE and his only known son William DALE. Sallie Pitts DALE is my ggrandmother. ** Anne "Nancy" Postley [sic] PITTS was born in St. Martins Parish, Worcester County, Maryland, on 14 April 1784. Her father was Hillary PITTS; her mother was Sally PARKER (Hillary PITTS' 2nd wife). Anne Postly [sic] PITTS married William DALE in Worcester, Maryland, on 19 February 1803. She died in DeKalb County, Tennessee, on 13 September 1858. William DALE was born in Dekalb, Tennessee* on 4 May 1783. He married Nancy, surname unknown, in 1804 in Dekalb County, Tennessee*, and died in Dekalb, Tennessee on 25 September 1845. [*Birth and marriage in Dekalb, TN, may be based on his living there, and having no other information. Otherwise the names and dates are a pretty good fit.] ** Isaac Alexander DALE, born in Worcester County, Maryland, on 21 August 1791, married Catherine PITTS (apparently Anne Postley PITTS' half-sister) in Worcester County, Maryland, on 4 July 1815. Isaac may be the brother of William, mentioned above. Catherine Pitts was born 13 November 1798 in St. Martins Parish, Worcester County, Maryland. Her parents were Hillary PITTS and Catherine PURNELL (Hillary PITTS' 4th wife). Isaac Alexander DALE was born in Worcester County, Maryland, on 21 August 1791. His parents were Thomas DALE and Elizabeth EVANS (IGI record). According to a FamilySearch Ancestral File, Isaac Alexander DALE had brothers named Adam DALE, born 14 July 1768 in Worcester, Maryland; Thomas DALE, born 15 April 1778 in Worcester, Maryland; William DALE born 4 May 1783 in DeKalb, Tennessee; and John E. DALE, born 12 May 1785 in Worcester, Maryland. In a message board posting William is called Rev. William DALE and Adam DALE is referred to as the first settler of Liberty, Smith County, Tennessee. With all these correspondences in names and places, aside from the marriages and purported sibling relationship between John P. and Thomas H. DALE I have NO IDEA how these people fit together. There has to be SOME relationship, but I just can't find it!! Can anyone help me with these people?! Jo H. Virginia
Hi all. I desperately need someone to do a quick lookup for me if possible. I found someone I think is my Burtram/Bertrand Smith on the 1860 Wilson County census but I can't make out the surname of the household in which he is! So, if possible, could someone please look at page 304 for the name Bertrand Smith, age 25. He is in the household of someone named David ? from TN, age 22. Others in the household are: Elizabeth, 23, VA, Francie, 16, TN, David E, 12 or 13, TN, and Idaline, 11, TN. If anyone can make out the name on the census, I would be thrilled! It looks like Morning, Mooring, I just can't make it out. :( Denise's Random Thoughts: Families are like fudge .. mostly sweet with a few nuts.

For Delores Shearon. Just as an addition to all of Bob's information, I send the following from Thomas E. Partlow's WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, CHANCERY COURT RECORDS 1842-1892 - Bill of complaint of John C. Guild and Edy Sanderson against Emeline and husband, Louis Palmer, administrators of Eliza and Adeline Sanderson who are dead, the first dying in Sumner County and the second in Davidson County. Wade Sanderson in 1849 made his will which was admitted in Wilson County Probate Court where he lived and died. By the terms of the will, he bequeathed their freedom to his servants Edy, Emeline, Adeline, John, Eliza, and Austin Sanderson, and the father of John Sanderson. He likewise devised the tract of land in Wilson County to his said servants. He devised that his servants should be transported to Liberia. There was much controversy in regard to the estate. The original bill was filed in behalf of the old woman, Edy, who was far advanced in age more than any of them. Emeline, Adeline, and others, that Mary was not in existence at the death of Wade Sanderson, that she was a child of Adeline, born seven or eight years after the probate of the wil! l, she being now about eighteen or nineteen, was born perhaps in 1857. The probability is that she was not entitled to the decree, but Adeline, her mother, was. There were seven devisees who were entitled, if Mary was entitled, it would make eight. 1 January 1875 (Chancery Book 1874, Pp. 471-474) This seems to be an interesting anecdote to the previous information. Hello Betty, I believe this entry from Thomas E. Partlow's WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, CHANCERY COURT RECORDS 1842-1892 may give you some help, although the David Jackson in the entry has a middle name of Foster. Anyway, here it is: Bill of complaint of John Jackson and James Jackson, Thomas B. Stroud and William Brown against James Drennan, executor of Jessie Jackson. The complainants are two of the children of said Jessie Jackson. The balance, Manerva, the wife of Newton Underwood; Jane, the wife of Samuel A. Comer; Sarah E., the wife of Wiley Pafford of Rutherford County; Mary C., the wife of Thomas P. Richardson of Bedford County; Winfield C. Jackson of Kentucky; DAVID FOSTER JACKSON who died in Bedford County, leaving two children, to wit, THOMAS AND MINERVA who are minors; Benjamin Jackson of Davidson County; Elizabeth, the wife of John Martin; Jane who is a minor; Missouri Jane who married a Steeger of Kentucky; William Griffis of Davidson County who married Lucy Drew who died in 1862. Thomas Shelton testified that "I am 68 years of age and married a daughter of James Drennan and that James Drennan died the last of January 1867." He further stated that he moved in the James Drennan house in February 1868. (Chancery Book I, Pp. 144-195) Another entry may also be helpful. This one is of an earlier date. Bill of complaint of Lucy D. Griffin of Dickson County against James Drennan, administrator of Jessie Jackson of Wilson County and William Griffin of Dickson County. Lucy D. Griffin is a married woman through her next friend and brother, John B. Jackson, states that her father, Jessie Jackson, departed this life in Wilson County and left a widow, Nancy Jackson, and twelve children. Nancy Jackson departed this life in Wilson County. 8 February 1860 (Chancery Book H, Pp. 317-320) These are not my people. Just doing a lookup for you. There are other Jackson entries if you think they are yours. Looks like they were spread around several counties. I would suggest he was a gatekeeper on the toll road ... many of the roads were maintained by fees paid at the 'tollgate'. Hi Would someone in Lebanon(Wilson County) be willing to do a couple of lookups for me or does anyone know if the Bobo Funeral Home has an e mail address? Thank you very much Madge Snyder nannie29@Juno.com
I am curious as to what a gatekeeper might have been in 1860. My g-g-grandfather Isaac Stone was listed as a gatekeeper in the 1860 Wilson Co. Tn. census. He was in civil dist. 10, P.O. Lebanon. The next family was listed as Min. and Pres. of C.U. University. Does this University still exists and if so, at the same location? Would they have records of employees that far back? It has been suggested: 1.Gatekeeper at the University 2. Gatekeeper across land where a fee is charged 3. Gatekeeper across a body of water where a fee is charged. Isaac Stone was listed as age 74 at the time. Can anyone help me? Thank you, Ruth

Because of the dates involved, it appears that WILLIAM SANDERSON was the father of this family of eight children: (1) WILLIAM SANDERSON, JR. (2) THOMAS SANDERSON made his will January 8, 1819 and it was probated October 21, 1819. He mentions his mother, but not her name; brother, WADE SANDERSON'; sister DRUCILLA; brothers WILLIAM and DANIEL; two youngest sisters, ELIZABETH and JANE. He named his brothers WADE and WILLIAM as his executors. JOHN SANDERSON was one of the witnesses [W&I, 1816-1819, p. 496] (3) WADE SANDERSON (4) DANIEL SANDERSON, living in the 1st CD, household 63, 1850 Census of WCT, and was 52, born in VA, and living with him were JANE SANDERSON, 21; ELIZABETH SANDERSON, 18; THOMAS SANDERSON, 16; MARY SANDERSON, 13; PERMELIA SANDERSON, 9; and ELIZA SANDERSON, 5, all born in TN. (5) DRUCILLA SANDERSON who married SAMUEL NORRIS in VA. The latter made his will July 7, 1854, probated September 21, 1854. In addition to Drucilla, he named daughter, MANERVA ARNOLD and her two youngest children, JOHN B. ARNOLD and WILL ARNOLD; daughters, HARRIET NORRIS, CASSANDER NORRIS, ELIZABETH CHAMBERS, and MILDRED BUCKLEY. He named his friend, EDWARD WILLIS as executor. ALEXANDER BRETT was one of the witnesses. MANERVA NORRIS ARNOLD married WILLIAM ARNOLD. Their son, JOHN B., married FRANCES YOUNG, July 31, 1828, WCT, and had at least these children: MARY ARNOLD, 18; SUSAN ARNOLD, 16; ELIZABETH ARNOLD, 13; CHARLES ARNOLD, 15; PARTHENIA ARNOLD, 12; and JOHN ARNOLD, 11 [from 1850 census] Other children of MANERVA and WILLIAM ARNOLD, according to his will dated September 29, 1849, were daughter, SUSANNAH BASKINS, daughter POLLY MATTHEWS and her husband SAMUEL MATTHEWS (their children, WILLIAM, SUSANNAH, LUCY, DOSILLAR, SALLY, ISAAC, HARRIET, POLLY, PEGGY, and LOCKEY MATTHEWS). SUSANNAH ARNOLD BASKINS married ROBERT (or THOMAS) BASKINS April 19, 1828. MILDRED NORRIS, daughter of SAMUEL and DRUCILLA SANDERSON NORRIS, married CARLOS M. BUCKLEY, January 6, 1849, WCT. (6) ELIZABETH SANDERSON married JAMES THRIFT, 1825. He is called DREWRY THRIFT in court records. According to WADE SANDERSON's will, they had six children: JENNY THRIFT REED; MILDRED THRIFT CHILDRESS; MARY ANN THRIFT ROSS; FRANCES THRIFT'; SUSAN B. THRIFT; and JOHN THRIFT Of these MILDRED THRIFT married JOHN CHILDRESS and had at least one son, WILLIAM CHILDRESS. MARY ANN (POLLY) THRIFT married JARRATT ROSS, November 22, 1849. (7) JOHN SANDERSON (8) JANE SANDERSON From THOMAS SANDERSON, his brother WADE inherited the slaves "negro girl, Harriet" after the death of their mother, and the "negro girl, Mimy". ALEXANDER BRETT, executor of WADE SANDERSON' estate, finalized an estate sale reported to the court on December 6, 1852. Seven months later, SAMUEL NORRIS "et al" appears as defendants regarding the provisions of WADE SANDER-SON'S will. Reading between the lines of the court records, it seems that NORRIS and other heirs took control of the slaves before BRETT could carry out the will's provisions, including the slaves' right to inherit the landed property. BRETT was a son of BARTHOLOMEW BRETT (d, 1861) and married four times: (1) MALINDA JENNINGS, March 28, 1839; (2) LOUISA H. CARTER, May 27, 1845; (3) MARY B. BIRTHWRIGHT, June 15, 1847; and (4) CHARITY SOPHIA RUTLAND, January 13, 1857. Bob ______________________________

Thanks again to our tireless web master, Greg Tomerlin, for uploading an addition to the Benjamin PRICHARD family history today. If you haven't been out to the Wilson Co Depot site http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwcogs/index.html , you've missed one of the best designed genealogical web sites I have seen - A site like the Depot doesn't just happen - it takes many hours of planning and programming. Wilson Co is very lucky to have this talented gentleman and I hope y'all will take time to send him a private note of thanks the next time you find something helpful on the site. The PRICHARD family was one the first families to settle in the Norene (formerly Henderson Crossroad) area (about 11 miles south of Lebanon). The surnames mentioned in the addition are PRICHARD, BYERS, ROBERTSON, WHITE, MAYO, GREEN, TASSEY, BASS, GILLUM and MISNER. It can be found at : http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnwcogs/famhist/pricha01.html Renee Glenn Swicegood, daughter of Helen Green Glenn, daughter of Flaura White Green (1896), daughter of Flaura Robertson White (1867), daughter of Sarah Byers Robertson (1850), daughter of Lucretia Prichard Byers(1832), daughter of Benjamin Prichard (1792) & Mary Ann "Polly" Campbell (1796)
This is my occasional post about a certain Smith I'm still searching for. Burt/Bert (full name thought to be Bertrand Trammel SMITH, marriage license says Bertrand SMITH) b. 4/28/1835 in Lebanon, Wilson County, TN. (possibly in a community/area called Indian Ladder?) Married, 3/6/1866 in Lebanon, Wilson County, TN. to : Sarah Elizabeth 'Betty' FAKES, b. 2/24/1844 in K. The family says she went by the last name BROWN before her marriage as her mother had remarried a Mr William Coleman BROWN. Betty's parents were Albert L FAKES and Sarah B JOHNSON FAKES (later BROWN). Bert and Betty had the following children, all born around Lebanon, TN: Nancy Lou Ella, b.12/1866, never married, lived with her sister Laura during her adult years. James Thomas 'Jim', b. 5/1868 Sarah F. 'Sallie', b. 6/1870 William B 'Billy', b. 6/1872 ( he had a daughter named Lillie May) Laura Elizabeth, b. 6/1875, married Roscoe HANKINS Alexon Monroe 'Lex', b. 11/1879, married Faye Allen DUNN from Caldwell County, KY I seem to get nowhere in my search for Burt/Bert's parents and siblings. If anyone on the list knows of a connection or suspects one, please let me know. :-) Denise's Random Thoughts: Families are like fudge .. mostly sweet with a few nuts.

Bob

Hi, everyone. I've just resubscribed after being off the list for a little while. I have new information that I hope will help in my search for information about my gggrandmother Susan HARRIS. When Susan HARRIS married Charles C. DALE in 1838, signing the marriage bond along with Charles DALE was Thomas SCOTT. I have absolutely no idea who this is or what the connection is. Does anyone have a HARRIS-SCOTT connection in their family tree or in their files? (or DALE-SCOTT?) Any little crumb someone can offer will be greatly appreciated. Would someone other than a family member be likely to sign a marriage bond? Jo H.
I have changed providers and have a new email address, if we have corresponded you might want to change from my old one. Thanks, Gale Prince Nash
Thanks to all who responded to my query. Mary June
