    1. [TNWILSON] geography and wording questions
    2. michael smith
    3. we only have the Wilson Co deed books at our library - BUT - I looked through them today to see if the deeds for Absalon tatum from 1792 & 1793 were in them! They are not. This tells me that theymust be listed in the Sumner Co deed books. So I would assume that (by default) answers my question about the Dist. N being all the same dist in TN. Based on that and based on the fact that those 2 deeds mention Stones river and the other one which mentions James Galloway is listed as being in Sumner, this must mean that all three are now in what is Wilson. That leads me to the geography question! Stones River is in Wilson is it not? and Stoners creek is in the same location of that Stone river - is it not? the question on wording! again the deed listed to "James Galloway in 1795 which states "Assignee of Heirs of Absalom Tefton/Tatum PVT". Would this mean he is an "heir" as in a descendent or could this simply be that this Absalom Tefton/Tatum assigned him the land and called him an heir. This is higghly confusing? thanks michael __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail! http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/

    1. [TNWILSON] my introduction
    2. michael smith
    3. Good afternoon list. My name is Michael Berryman Smith. I am researching (at the moment) only the surname Galloway in the region of TN that is Sumner, Davidson, Dickson, Wilson Counties. I am very stuck and would like to entertain yall with were I am at. (in short) I am researching John Galloway (1786 VA - according to 1850 census) who married Sally Barrett in Wilson Co on 9 May, 1810. I believe that John is possibly from a family of Galloways who were in Sumner as early as 1 JUNE 1780. That Galloway being John Galloway who recieved a preemption in 1782 for having been there prior to that date. Now thatvery same land was sold in 1808 by the sheriff to Hugh Barr (one can see H. Barr on map Dist 10 just east of Shiloh). My opth theory is based on a grant; Galloway, James (SN) 1795 Dist N. Bk C - 3 p.290 grant # 2436 warrent # 1704. "Assignee of Ansalom Tefton PVT" I think that Tefton may actually be TATOM. Now the curious thing here is an Absalom tatom recieved 2 different grants also in District N but each also goes on to say Stones River which is in Wilson Co. (The entries don't have a county code). This is very intersting because when my John Galloway married Sally Barrett (which incidentally the actual name on Bond is Barnett) an Andrew Robertson was the bondsman. In an effort to use that as a clue - I have researched this Andrew Robertson and discovered that he is a son of Hugh Robertson who himself is a nephew of Gen. James Robertson. Hugh aquired land that was in both Davidson and Wilson Counties and the deeds mention Stoners creek. (if I'm not mistaken Stoners creek shoots of Stones river). If District N listed above is in Sumner for Galloway, james is the same as the Dist. N for Tatom then I might have the best clue so far as to John's father - that being James galloway the assignee of heirs! anythoughts greatly appriciated - and I Thank you for having me on the list. michael smith __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Thomas E. Partlow's WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, CHANCERY COURT RECORDS 1842-1892, has the following entry which does not contain a great deal of information: Bill of complaint of Drura (sic) Hall of Rutherford County against Samuel W. Shorter. 6 July 1874 (Chancery Book 1874, Pp. 198-199) This would undoubtedly be the younger Drury. There are a couple of other Hall entries which don't seem to have anything to do with this family. Here are the names in those entries: Amzi P.; Elizabeth F.; J. M.; Lucy J.; S. A.; William M. If you feel that any of these may be the ones you are seeking, I will be happy to transcribe them for you. These are not a part of my family. Just doing a lookup for you. 2. David Duncan
    3. Hello, Seeking information on Samuel A or H. Johnson who married Isabella Duncan Dec 2, 1865, in Wilson Co. TN. He most likely was born ca 1835 in Wilson Co. to Phillip Johnson and Nancy Carr Johnson but I cannot verify that. He and Isabella moved to Texas shortly after their marriage. Isabella Duncan was the orphan dau. of Wm. S. Duncan and Eliza Chambers and the grand dau of Wm S. Duncan Sr and Nancy Scott all of Wilson Co. Any information would be most helpful and appreciated. I don't believe that Wesley and Eli Hancock are of my direct line but probably are another branch of my tree. I am trying to help someone else as you are trying to help me. Thanks. "Did Eli go to Texas to get away from his huge debet?" Yes, I have always suspected so. He was quite a wheeler-dealer in Wislon, TN, frequently buying and selling land, businesses, slaves, etc. He evidently achieved some prominence in the community. He was named a Trustee of Campbell Academy in 1850. Shortly thereafter, he left the area for Texas. The financial problems did not destroy the marriage. Mary died 19 Jul 1869 and Eli died 22 Aug 1879. They are buried together in Lamar, TX. I am particularly interested in the relationship of Wesley and Eli. Wesley was 21 years older than Eli. Wesley remained in Wilson, TN and died there 8 Sep 1865. On 6 Feb 1837 Eli F. Hancock and Wesley Hancock sold 70 acres in the 19th District to John W. Booker. This would appear to be inherited land. From whom did they acquire the land? Arvil

    1. Re: [TNWILSON] ELI F. HANCOCK (1809-1879)
    2. Teresa Walker
    3. Thomas E. Partlow's WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, CHANCERY COURT RECORDS 1842-1892, has two entries for Eli Hancock. Neither of these entries gives his parentage, but they contain things of interest about Mary Powell's family which you may want to add to your records. (These are not my family, just doing a lookup for you.) 1. Mary H. Hancock versus Eli F. Hancock, William T. Powell, John G. Powell, Edward L. Powell, Samuel T. Powell, Benjamin D. Powell, Henry B. Powell, German L. Powell, Samuel T. Powell, Benjamin D. Powell, Henry B. Powell, and Elizabeth C. Powell, all of Wilson County; and Nancy C. Hodges and husband Richard, and Alexander S. Powell of Mississippi. In November 1847, John Powell, father of Mary H. Hancock, died intestate. Her mother Elizabeth A. Powell, died intestate in the month of June. Eli F. Hancock, husband of the said Mary H. Hancock, is greatly in debt. His debt would swallow up what she will receive. She is asking that an injunction be granted preventing the administrators from giving her share of the estate to her husband. 13 July 1850 (Chancery Court 1850-1854, Pp. 49-52) 2. James B. Rutland versus Eli Hancock and Wesley Hancock. Attachment. July 1852 (Chancery Court 1850-1854, Pp. 338-342) 3. Bill of complaint of Eli F. Hancock against Samuel T. Powell, Richard Hodges and wife Nancy C., William T. Powell, Elizabeth Powell, John G. Powell, administrator of John and Elizabeth Powell, Edward S. Powell, Benjamin D. Powell, Henry B. Powell, German S. Powell, Alexander H. Powell, Elizabeth C. Powell, Mary H. Hancock, all of Wilson County, except Richard Hodges and wife and Alexander H. Powell of Mississippi. Said Eli F. Hancock is seeking to determine the amount of Samuel T. Powell's interest in the estate of John and Elizabeth Powell. 28 October 1848 (Chancery Book D, Pp. 523-526) (I don't understand the last one in that Elizabeth Powell apparently did not die until June 1850. Also, what has Samuel T. Powell's interest in the estate have to do with Eli? Maybe you have more information which will help you figure this out.) Anyway, I hope these are helpful to you. Did Eli go to Texas to get away from his huge debts? One of the soldiers in his company was from Watertown. If anyone has any info on James Kelly, or that particular company, I would love it if they could share it with me! I just recently discovered this about him, he was my great-great Grandfather. Coincidentally, I used to live in Lebanon, during the summer of 1996. Nice town! I still visit once or twice a year. Christmas married one of the McLemore girls and his nephew John C. McLemore succeeded Christmas when he died about 1810. >> Does anyone know anything about Lemuel Nicholson who was married to Lavina Young in Wilson County, Tennessee on 25 November 1825, by Brinkley Bridges, J.P. and Robert Young as bondsman? I believe that Lavina was the widow of Banister Young, whom she married in Wake County, North Carolina in 1808 as Lavina Privitt. Banister Young was of a Franklin County, North Carolina Family.
