    1. Graves Family Association and Graves DNA project
    2. 2006 is here and our Executive Director of the Graves Family Association, Ken Graves, is already busy at work organizing the BIG Graves Family Reunion Jun 15-17 2007 in Williamsburg VA to coincide with the 400 year anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, VA of which Captain Thomas Graves was a part. He is also busy with the Graves DNA project. Anyone not a member of the association please consider joining. Go to WWW.GRAVESFA.ORG to find out more or email Ken at [email protected] To learn more about the DNA project which has some new interesting facts about the descendants of CAPT Thomas Graves of Jamestown (or should I say those who thought they were descendants) go to the site and click on DNA project and do some research on what Ken has to say. Also click onto the DNA scholarship site and see the generations who are contributing to the fund and the DNA samples from certain generations. JOIN today and learn more about the GRAVES family. Also, we are asking that as many of you that can contribute something to the DNA analysis project. Ken is $173 in the red for 2006 and since he is a 100% volunteer a $10 or $25 or $100 donation to help fund the tests is appreciated. There is also now a Graves Blog about which the details can be found on the Graves site and sign up for the association newsletter. Happy New Year to each of the cousins. Hope to meet many of you in Virginia in 2007. Ron Graves in Texas GFA Volunteer

    1. Old Family Cemetery on Trousdale Ferry Pike
    2. While driving to meet my real estate agent yesterday, I passed an old family cemetery on Trousdale Ferry Pike in Wilson County. The cemetery is right at the Wilson and Smith County line - due east of the Watermelon Moon estate. This cemetery looks like it is in need of Tender Loving Care from someone. Does anyone know what family is buried here? I took a moment to look it up and couldn't find anything. I am still trying to find all the marriages, etc, looking for descendants, who can shed some light on the Cooks. This John was still in Wilson in the 1860 census. Not sure where he is in 1870. But I am still looking. Let me ask, do you know for sure, or are you hoping this is your John F. Cook from Wilson Co.? One thing I would do is to order copies of your Otto Paul Cook's World War I records. Order his service papers, and also check with the VA and see if he recieved any medical care before he was wounded. Sometimes the Army has a wealth of information, other times, not, but worth a shot. They may have his parents names and/or who to contact if he should have died. The other thing to check is Ancestry.com, they have all the WWI draft registration cards online. All the boys, and men of a certain age had to fill out a card, whether they were drafted or not, and they had to put next of kin on the records. It may give you an idea as to where the family was living in that time period. I'll let you know if I find anything about the John F. Cook in Wilson. And if I can help, let me know. Sally

In the 1860 census Rachel evidently has married a B.P. Castleman. Rachel's children (Wright) and Castleman's children are living with them. In the 1870 census Rachel is listed, no husband, but two of her children and one of the Castleman children are living with her. I also found a marriage for a William Wright and Rachel Cook in Davidson Co. TN, 12 Dec. 1835. This would fit in with the above Rachels' age. Is this your Rachel? Sally

Surnames: Cook Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UiB.2ACI/1272.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you both for being so interested in the Cook family. Unfortunately, my information on them is still next to nothing. On one funeral record, that of my grandfather, John Roland Cook, his father is listed as " John F. Cook ". There is a very vague family story that this John F. Cook had been a skinner of buffalo, and, in 1899, abandoned his family, and, soon after, died in Deadwood, South Dakota. I do know that he actually did die between February, 1899, and June, 1900, but that is flat all; not even the place, or circumstances, are known. His wife's maiden name was Margaret Pirtle, from Henderson Co., Tennessee, and I know quite a bit about her family; but, even though she lived until the late 1940's, she seems to have spoken very little about greatgrandpa John F. Cook. I have an uncle, who does have papers which very possibly can reveal much, and I hope to soon be able to go through them with him. Besides my grandpa, John Roland Cook, greatgrandpa's children were Otto Paul Cook, killed in WWI; Charles James Cook, who died in the early 1950's, very soon followed by his wife, and eventually their only child. Harry Gerome Cook was the youngest of the brothers, and he died in Missouri, without any family. It appears that my greatgrandparents married around 1890. One son was then born in Garland Co., Arkansas, one in Tennessee, then, my grandpa was born in Paducah, Kentucky, on December 3, 1896, and the last, Harry Gerome, was born in Tennessee, in October, 1899.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UiB.2ACI/935.1 Message Board Post: Hi, I just answered a message about a John Cook, posted on this board. I believe related to Lemuel Cook. I came across the cemetery where Alvira (Elvira) and her husband Dr. Lemuel N. M. Cook are buried. I plan on cleaning up the cemetery, and would like to have a history of the family. The only mention of this cemetery is in one of Jeannette Acklen's books, published in the 1930's, and even then the person reading the graves was only able to read about 5 or 6 stones, and mentioned there were 6 other graves. I found a headstone for someone not mentioned in Tombstone Inscriptions and Bible Records. (Acklen's Book). But the cemetery apparently was in decline even in the 30's. The headstone I found was stacked up with some others. As stated in my other post, I just started the research this week, haven't looked at the Lassiter family, just beginning to sort out the Cook family. I would be more than happy to help you with anything you may need. Hope you still read this board! Sally

I believe John's father Jessee Cook was related to this family somehow. There were various Cook families near this property, and I believe they were related. Just not sure how exactly, but just started the research. I plan on cleaning up the cemetery, (it's a mess), it is small, but would love to find out some history of the family and possible descendants. Sally
