James is born 1750-60; Thomas is born 1770-80; and Alex is born 1800-10. There is little information on this line of the Roach family. There is a John N. Roach who married Rachel Hopkins and he left a will in 1846 so his family is fairly well known. There were three other brothers to John N. who were in Williamson County, TN, Simon, Stephen and William. Stephen died about 1816 in Williamson County, William went to Davidson County and Simon remained in Williamson County. Both William and Stephen left wills, so their line is fairly well known too. Simon did not leave a will. This group of brothers came into middle TN in the early 1800's, it appears out of North Carolina, possibly Onslow County. I believe the James-Thomas-Alex line is more than likely related to these brothers and perhaps is a missing brother to the several brothers listed above, but not sure. Has anyone researched the James-Thomas-Alex line, which appear that they could be Grandfather, Father and Son, but that is not certain? In 1828, there is an Alexander Roach who marries Elizabeth E. Wright in Wilson County, TN. It is probably this same Alex. Also, in the marriage records for Wilson County, TN, there are some Roach family who marry about the same time as Alex, in the late 1820's and 1830's, and they are not among John N. Roach's children. They could be Alex's siblings. Seeking help with this family. Marie

Dear Subscribers, I need some help in acquiring more identification of the subject man. Based on a transcribed Bible record [not the most reliable source], I believe he was the husband of one Sally or Sarah Williams, daughter of William Williams (d. Dec 1775 at Boonesborough) and his wife Phillis (some say Beckham) of Granville Co., NC. Sarah or Sally's only surviving brother was Samuel Farrar Williams (1759 Granville Co. NC- d. ca 1835 Henderson Co., KY). All evidence points to the fact that S.F.Williams is my ancestor. Is anyone on this rootsweb able to add additional information which you are willing to share concerning either Samuel Hogg (later of Wilson Co., TN) and his bride Sally or Sarah Williams? Here are some notes. I have a few more, but I don't want to bore you.: Preparer: E. W. Wallace, April 1998 Edited 6/99 Rev 8/2000 Rev 2/ 2004, Added to Oct 2004, rev. Mar 2005 SAMUEL HOGG. (ca 1760-aft 1820 TN?) husband of Sally Williams, who is said to have died in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. (Transcribed Sneed family Bible entry, said to have been at one time in the 1990s the hands of a person in Henderson Co., KY, a Mr. Soaper. The transcript was in the hands of Mrs. ...., San Diego, CA and the original was said to have been in Henderson Co. KY). The couple were married in 1792 in Granville Co. NC. We tend to believe that Sally Williams may have been a second or later wife of Samuel Hogg the elder. Samuel Hogg the elder is not to be confused with a younger Samuel Hogg, who seems to have been the elder's nephew and for whom the elder Samuel Hogg was guardian Granville Co., NC Deed Bk R-194 Know all men by these presents that I Samuel Hogg Senr. This may be the groom of Sally Williams. Note Smith Co. residence, state unknown but probably Virginia] There was a younger Samuel Hogg, who, according to his biography in BIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY OF THE TENNESSEE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Edwards Hogg. The younger man (1783-1842) was a physician, and he seemed to be a young adult in the early 1800s. He had attended schools in Caswell Co., North Carolina. According to other information, cited below, the younger Samuel Hogg was a nephew of the older Samuel Hogg. Samuel Hogg married Sally (Sarah or Sary) Williams, most probably the daughter of the deceased William Williams (d. Dec 1775 at Boonesborough) and his wife Phillis [Beckham?]. As stated, this relationship deduction is based on the "Sneed family Bible," as found among the Bible transcriptions which gave a date of death for Sarah/Sallie Williams, later Hogg. Sally Williams's older sister Mary was married to Stephen Sneed of Granville Co. while her older brother (and only surviving brother) Samuel Farrar Williams was married 1st) to Hannah Sneed, sister of Stephen Sneed. Hence, information about the Williamses would be included in a Sneed Bible, the whereabouts of which is not currently known (2006). Granville Co. marriage record: Saml. Hogge & Sarah Williams, 14 May 1792; W. Norwood, bm; Saml Worthington, wit. (Elizabeth Hicks Hummell in HICKS HISTORY OF GRANVILLE CO., NC, V. I, MARRIAGE BONDS, 1965 [Oxford, NC: Coble Publishing Co., 1965] p. 205.) This marriage record does not appear in Brent H. Holcomb's transcriptions of the marriage bonds of Granville Co., NC. A few errors have been noted in Holcomb's transcriptions. Study of Granville Co. land records indicates the Norwood family was a neighbor of the Williams family in the Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co. Concerning the bondsman: The Norwood family seem to have been close associates of the Williams family from at least 1752; hence, a bondsman named Norwood. John Norwood was witness to a deed to John Williams [Sr.] (Sally's grandfather) in 1752, and a later patent to John Williams [Sr.] indicated his land adjoined that of Nathaniel Norwood.) Granville Co. Deed bk 4, 1796-1799, page 40 gives the following information: Aug. 4, 1796 - Samuel Hogg appoints Robert Weakley and Howel Tatom of the Southwest Territory now called Tennessee, attorneys, to attend to the division of the lands of my brother Thomas Hogg and obtain 1000 acres as speedily as possible left me by will of said Thomas Hogg and convey same to Thomas Bedford, having sold to him and received full payment. Wts. : none. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, Court minutes of Granville County, North Carolina, 1746-1820 [Rocky Mount, NC: J. W. Watson, 1977], p. 199) This power of attorney indicates that Samuel Hogg was still residing in Granville Co. in 1796. Samuel Hogg's brother Thomas was the father of Dr. Samuel Hogg, the younger man who was prominent in politics in Tennessee. According to ............. in a e-mailed family journal dated 29 Jun 2000, Samuel Hogg was a Captain in the American Revolution (Virginia Soldiers of 1776, p. 912-913). He died in 1820 in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. (Ibid.) The one who received a pension (or applied for a pension) ca 1818 was no doubt the older Samuel Hogg as his age is given as age 73. State of Tennesse: Gibson Co., March Term 1833. Proved in court that Dr. Samuel Hogg of Nashville, and John B. Hogg of the town of Trenton, Gibson Co. are the only heirs at law of Samuel Hogg, Dec'd. late a Captain in the Rev. army. That Capt. Sam'l Hogg died in the year 1820 in the town of Lebanon, Wilson Co., Tenn. and that he died intestate and the foregoing was ordered certified, and the Clerk gave a certified copy thereof." (E-mail) Since the elder Samuel Hogg was reportedly a Revolutionary officer in Virginia, an online search of military records of Virginia was made March 2005. There were several military certificate numbers [bounty land certificates] issued by Virginia. Details are not known, but these are the Land Office certificate numbers of the first three listed on the Library of Virginia website: LO 73; LO 8052; LO ExMWt 437. [LO is land office. MWt is probably military warrant. EX not known.] Samuel Hogg was witness on 6 Mar 1811 to a power of attorney of Thomas Creedle of Granville Co. to Archibald Lucid of the same county to recover some money from Nathaniel Moss of Mecklenburg Co., VA. (Irwin Sneed, identity unknown, was another witness to the same document.) (Ransom McBride, "Migration As Shown in Powers of Attorney," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, V. 3, p. 236) If you can add information to this brief biography, please e-mail. E.W.Wallace

Looking for relatives of the Wilson County Hayes family. My great great grandfather was Jonathan Thomas of South Carolina who married Susan Hayes of the Wilson-Davidson County area in 1828. They then migrated to Marshall County, TN to the Verona-Farmington area. Family tradition has it that Susan and her family were neighbors to the "Jacksons," but I have never been able to substantiate it. One of their children, Susan Cassandra, married William Everett Musgrave. Any help would be appreciated. Most sincerely, William R. (Bill) Massey of Lewisburg/Marshall County, Tennessee

Thomas E. Partlow's WILSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, CHANCERY COURT RECORDS 1842-1892, has the following entries: 1. A bill of complaint by Sarah Elizabeth and William L. Andrews, minors who are represented by their uncle Roland G. Andrews, Alfred E. Donnell, Ebenezer Andrews, and William M. Andrews against Purnell H. Andrews and Norman Walsh. Sarah Elizabeth and William L. Andrews are the only heirs of their mother, Susannah Andrews, formerly Susannah Spears. After the death of their mother, their grandfather, William Spears, gave them a sum of money. Their father, Pernal G. Andrews, was appointed guardian. Said parties are seeking an injunction against their father to prevent him from spending their money on a tract of land. 23 December 1843 (Chancery Court 1842-1845, Pp. 260-270) 2. P. W. Simpson has in the estate of Daniel Kelly who died in August or September 1874. Said Simpson is a grandson of the intestate Kelly. The wards of C. W. Simpson, to wit, Lucy J. and John Simpson are the children of N. C. Simpson and grandchildren of said Kelly. N. C. Simpson left the State in 1866 or 67 and is believed to be in Illinois. One or two years after leaving the State, his wife or widow returned and stayed in the home of her husband's father for several months and then moved to Texas to live with relations. She intermarried in Texas with one John Penuel. It is believed that N. C.Simpson died in Illinois in 1868 or 1869. 12 April 1876 (Chancery Book 1875-1876, Pp. 258-260) 3. Joseph M. Anderson versus D. I asked much the same question of the several researchers at the Wilson County Archives one afternoon a couple years ago. It was my first visit. My 4th great grandfather had lived there for several years around 1809--1816. Bought and sold land as he moved through on his way to southern Indiana. The consensus was that no one reason existed, but that Wilson County was simply a crossroads; a place to stop on your way to somewhere else. I suspect the destinations were at least as diverse. Indiana was popular for the cheap land. 40 acres for $50.00 was a HUGE attraction. I know of some who went on to Illinois, Kansas, Iowa. Myron E.
