(WWR) Jones, William...died Monday last at the hands of another young man, named George Allen, near a grocery store at a somewhat famous place, 9 miles east of Franklin, known as "lousy Level". They had been shooting for money when angry words ensued. After imbibing more whiskey a quarrel was started. Allen shot Jones through the right thigh with a large rifle ball. When Jones fell he had a large open knife in his hand. Jones died 3 hours later. The father of Jones was drunk while the inquest was being held on the body of his son. (WWR 3-12-1847) The remains of Capt. William B. Allen, Robert W. Green, Julius C. Elliott, Inman Elliott, & Peter H. Martin, all who fell at Monterey, reached Nashville on 9 March 1847, on the steamer "Tennessee". Their funersl services were preached at the Presbyterian Church on March 11th by Rev. Dr. Edgar.
