    1. Re: [TNWILLIA] WHITE
    2. Hi Donna, and good morning! I'm glad to here that you want to get with others that are serious, you should!!! Espeacially if you want answers,Huh? What is this Tn. Tidbits you spoke of? Is it something written, edited, and distributed online in N.C. through a Historic Society or Association? Can someone subscribe to it? I have an article about "Granny White" in my Newspaper Clippings book somewhere,I'll dig it up as not only you and the 6 or 7 others that responded as well as T.Vance Little (Local Author,Lawyer,Historian) are inquiring, and there just isn't enough on Her out there !!! Let me tell you a little story about a greedy As____!!! I grew up seeing and wondering about "Granny White's Inn", it was on get this; "Granny White Pk.", a road about 7 houses down the street from me and I either crossed it,travelled on it,spoke of it etc.,nearly every day of my life from the age of 2-16yrs. Granny's Inn was Quite Famous then and I believe is even more Famous now...and the Man that owned the land that Her Inn was Still Standing On, although it was only a small portion of the original, that had numerous rooms and Additions.built on the original Cabin. When I was abt 4yrs old my Dad took me west/southwest on GrannyWhite pk. and showed me the Family's old Homestead in Brentwood,we had to drive right past Granny White's Inn on the way;even at the tender age of 4 yrs. I had a Serious sense of wonder about things that were OLD and HISTORIC,so when I asked my Dad what that old House was,He told me all about Granny White and that even though Her Inn was off of the "Trace" (Natchez Trace) which ran about 4 1/2 miles west from there, that people travelling the Trace would make a "B-line" to "Granny's Tavern". The likes of Andrew Jackson,Aaron Burr,James K. Polk, and Merriwether Lewis,as well as members of the White family, notably you can bet that Dr. John White and His brothers and cousins, also McDowell's,Hayes's,Sawyer's,McGavock's,and the Crockett's, including Davey Crockett who did not live in the immeadiate area, but often had visits with his family that like the rest mentioned before only lived within 2-3 miles down the road from the Inn (withe the exception of Jackson,Burr,Polk and Lewis, who lived futher away) All of the local Explorer's/Adventure'ers came by as often as they could, because Granny White was known as a very Colorful, and Flamboyant Innkeeper, that was one "Hell of a Cook" as someone said, and always had good Spirits around for Patrons to consume. At the time of my 1st visit I was hooked on the place! I often came by to look at it,something drew me near, little did I know that She was probably my Ancestor. The Inn had two other additions left that were originally added on to the center buiiding, which was the 1st. structure I believe, One day I drove past and they had demolished one side of the structure, because it had fallen down, now get this; The owner of the property the Inn sat on had ordered the Demo- lition and the State and Local Historic Agencies wanted the Remains to Preserve, and this Man would not let them, he didn't care about History and didn't want people comming by to stare at the place, even though he didn't live on the property itself, and swore he would "Tear the Inn down and make sure no one got the remains" ! And this he did in the early 80's,and thus ended a Unique and Colorful Part of Early American Pioneer History that should be and would have been around if not for the GREED of one person. I'll locate the article as soon as I can for you and send you a copy or give you the online location of the Article so you can share it with Family. Chuck McDowell *** P.S. It is possible that Dr. John White was Granny White's son, (Mary/Polly Burnam) who married Zacharia White is my 6th GrGrandmother,so I'm intrested in this very much.
