    3. Actually, no money was posted. The person who "made the bond" actually just signed as being responsible. The bondsman just certified that the person was, in fact, legible to marry. In theory if the prospective husband was not legible to marry, the bondsman could be charged the amount of the bond. The amount of the bond was set by the state. In practice, most of the time, the person making the bond could never have paid the amount which was probably years of income. Eldon J.
