    3. William, I'm taking a chance you might be able to help me with some Cartwright history. My gggrandfather, Samuel Orten (1785-1824) was from Rowan County, NC. He married Rebecca Campbell in 1804/5 in Rowan County. They eventually moved to 'around' Nashville and there we lose them. I've seen a date they moved as being 1811 or so. We can prove his first wife Rebecca lived until at least 1817. We've learned through family history Samuel Orton/Orten's second wife was Sarah Cartwright. We've found no marriage information for Samuel and Sarah so I really have very little to go by. I have no idea when or where they married. Samuel had 4 or 5 children and one more that we know of with second wife Sarah Cartwright. Samuel died around 1824 and Sarah and all the children came to Missouri. There we lose Sarah again. I have so little to work with I may not know what I'm seeing if it hit me in the face. If you have any information to share or suggestions I'd love to hear from you. Naturally I'll share whatever I have. 2. The State of Tennessee did not exist as a State in 1780,did it ? Almost all of the Land Patents were given from North Carolina, whose governing body thought owned the land destined to become The Great State of Tennessee !

    3. No. Williamson became a county in 1799.. The land was surveyed in 1780, and the State of TN granted the property to James Robertson, an assignee of John Ring in 1808. 3. Nothing bout the family is given. There also is a "W. D. Cartwright" who bought the land in 1879. He kept it until 1933. There is a Cartwright cemetery on the property, decendents of W. D. Cartwright. Nothing else is mentioned. 3. Colleen, This comes from the book: "Historic Williamson County" by Virginia Bowman: "Early Williamson County records show that the land on which this house (Beech Grove) was surveyed April 18, 1780, and was granted by the State of Tennessee to James Robertson, an assignee of John Ring in 1808. James Robinson sold the 274 acre tract to Ephraim Brown that same year. Six years later, Brown sold the tract where the house stands to his son George W. Brown. After John Cartwright bought the place in 1833, the Beechgrove Methodist Church was located on the premises from 1834 until 1849 when it combined with two other churches to form Bethlehem Methodist Church. ...(other owners)... Beech Grove is (today) located on Manley Lane one and one-half miles from Hillsboro Pike." 2. The Vowells are from my wife's side. However, I have not done that much research on that line. I believe the farthest back I have found is a John F. Vowell, born around 1851. Most of her Vowells were in the Lauderdale/Dyer Counties of TN. Ed ----------------------------- See home page at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adams1895

    3. Ed, I checked out your web site and noted that you are also following the Vowell family. I have several Vowells in my DB, but somewhat earlier than yours. Do you know anything about a John Vowell (b 1790/1800 ) who was married to a Martha G. (b. abt 1802)? I have their children as : Georgian, Mary Jane, William and Jones Robert(?) all born between 1827-1842. 3. My DB goes back to a Joseph Skyles Cowan (b 1777) m. Jean (Jane) Graham (b 1784), daughter Rosanna (b 1808) who married a James Meacham (1810-1851), who is my 2nd great grand uncle. I have more on both families, and glad to share what I have. I also have a number of Winsteads, but in the Hawkins County, TN area mostly. Would be interested in finding a connection to them in Williamson County.. 3. No they are originally from South Carolina and then moved to Georgia. From Georgia my ggg-grandfather Louis Harvey Gray moved to Winston County, Alabama. My great-grandfather, his dad and many of his siblings finally settled in Lawrence County, Tennessee. They got into Tennessee in the early 1900's. I do not know of any ties to Williamson County at this point.
