Does anyone know if there was an organized group of Quakers in the Williamson County area?? Do any of you happen to know if the order met in churchs or halls and if there were Quakers in the area, where did that group meet? My Koen Ancestors were Quakers in North Carolina, but may have left this religion prior to moving from there to Tn.. Thanks Sandra
I just received a copy of a death certificate and have a question. The place of burial looks like Se...... Fork Cemetery. Can anyone fill me in, and where this might be in the county? Thanks Gayle

I thought that interesting to see the "Stewart" middle name with the Burdett's. I found out a few days ago that my Samuel M. Burdett was married to a Sarah Stewart in TN, but it wouldn't have been until after the Civil War. I'll keep that name though to see what pops up. Thanks. Gayle, There are lots of BURDETTE's (an E added to the end of the name) that were in the Leiper's Fork area of Williamson County. There was an article in the Dec. 21, 1939 issue of The Review Appeal about Ben B. and Anna Waller Burdette celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary. It mentions that Ben is the son of John and Sally Hargrove Burdette. It also mentions that John came from Alabama and served 4 years in the Confederate Army. Ben was born in Williamson County Aug. 17, 1868. It mentions a brother Robert and a sister Rosa. Does this fit into anything you have? My husband is a descendant of Samuel Stewart BURDETT SR, b. 1823 in Bedford Co., TN, through his son, Samuel Stewart BURDETT JR [1852-1881]. SR was the son of William JR and Sarah Jane LOWE. Any connections? Lanita Sconce Miller www.lanitasloft.com My ancestors must be in a witness protection program!
Dave, Thanks, that Samuel M. Burdett of Bledsoe Co., TN , is Samuel Marion, while mine is Samuel Monroe. Real easy to get confused. I worked that Bledsoe census a few days ago, and thought for a bit I had found my man. I'm thinking that for whatever reason, my uncle Samuel was calling himself "John". I still have thirteen more pages from his Confederate Pension coming from the TN archives, plus I will order his widow's application as well. Your idea of checking neighboring counties is a good idea too. Like maybe Davidson? I'm sure some of you have found people by doing a page by page search, that were not listed on an index of that county. Thanks to you all for your ideas. I would be wrong on this Samuel Burdett, he died in Bledsoe County in 1922. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David R Masters" <davmast@houston.quik.com> To: <TNWILLIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 28, 2004 7:29 PM Subject: Re: [TNWILLIA] Burdett Query Gayle, Have you checked the Census images for the surrounding counties? There is a Samuel M. Burdett listed in the 1910 census for Bledsoe County, 6th district. His age is listed as 76. He is living with a daughter Laucrecia [Lavenia?], age 39. This census also asked if they were a Civil War Veteran, and this response was CA. It does list him as being born in Tennessee, but this response would depend upon who gave the answers. I have found incorrect information in the census on my ancestors also. A person has to make an analytic judgement call on some of these entries. Good luck in finding more information on your Confederate veteran. YOU SEE GAYLE,AS WE CARRY ON WITH THINGS IN OUR QUESTS,DON'T FORGET THESE ORGANIZATIONS ARE UPDATING THE INFORMATION THAT THEY HAVE,MORE AND MORE IS BEING TRANSCRIBED EVERY DAY,SO YOU MUST GO BACK AND TAKE ANOTHER LOOK FROM TIME TO TIME. TRY THE TNGENWEB,ON THESE PENSION RECORDS,YOUL SEE A LISTING ON THEM IF THEY APPLIED,BUT IT WON'T HAVE MUCH INFO FOR YOU,OR TRY THE TEXAS GENWEB,LOTS OF PEOPLE MOVED THERE TOO. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR QUEST.....CHUCK
Gayle, Have you checked the Census images for the surrounding counties? There is a Samuel M. Burdett listed in the 1910 census for Bledsoe County, 6th district. His age is listed as 76. He is living with a daughter Laucrecia [Lavenia?], age 39. This census also asked if they were a Civil War Veteran, and this response was CA. It does list him as being born in Tennessee, but this response would depend upon who gave the answers. I have found incorrect information in the census on my ancestors also. A person has to make an analytic judgement call on some of these entries. Good luck in finding more information on your Confederate veteran. He was born 10 Mar 1843 in Wedowee, Randolph Co., Alabama. He served with his two brothers (Benjamin Apling Burdett and Littleton Jesse Burdett) in the 13th AL. Infantry Co. E. At the close of the Civil War, he was released from Federal Prison in Nashville, Tennessee, and moved to Franklin. His Confederate Pension Application, indicates he died in WIlliamson County 28 Oct. 1929. From the application, I discovered his wife's name was Sarah and he still had one male child (age 13) living at home. Unfortunately, I've never found him on an 1870, 1880, 1910 and 1920 census, listed as Sam, or S.M. Burdett. . I did however, find a "John" Burdett living in that county up to the 1920 census. "John's" age fits, as does his and his parent's birth states. Interesting that this wife's name was Sarah, also I find a son Benjamin (his brother's name) and a son James (his father's name). I have heard that after the war, there were men he either changed their first names, or because of their distrust of the federal government, would give false info on the census (or would not register at all). Has anyone one the list, ever heard of any Burdett's living in Williamson county? If this "John" is the same man, there would also be other children present (Lavenia, Roland, Ellis, Manerva and Snowada) . Any ideas or directions? Thank you and sorry this is so long. GAYLE, I DID READ YOUR INQUIRY,WHAT I'M TRYING TO GET ACROSS IS A NICK- NAME CAN COME FROM ANY EVENT OR PLACE OR OCCURANCE,AND IN A TIME OF SUCH HORRIBLE STRIFE FOR THESE BOYS ANYTHING THEY COULD DO TO MAKE MERRY OR LIGHT OF THINGS AROUND THEM ,THEY DID !!! SO A FUNNY OUT OF CONTEXT NICKNAME WAS RIGHT IN LINE WITH THIER ACTIONS,IT WAS COMMON TO DO THIS. IF YOU'LL GO TO THE MILITARY RECORDS AT THE "NATIONAL- MILITARY ARCHIVES" IN ST.LOUIS,YOU'LL FIND THAT THEY HAVE OLD AS WELL AS LATER INFO ON JOHN....REMEMBER THEY PAID HIM A PENSION FOR MANY YEARS, SO THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU HOPEFULLY MORE THAN YOU MAY THINK. IT'S JUST A SUGGESTION ,WE GENEOLOGISTS USE THESE TYPES OF RECORDS FOR LOTS OF REASONS ,I THOUGHT IT MAY HELP YOU, AFTERALL, ANYTHING IS WORTH TRYING. CHUCK
Chuck, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I have verified that my Samuel Monroe Burdett, did serve with his brothers in the 13th AL. The three of them are present with Co. E on the Alabama Archives website, and the Soldiers & Sailors, plus I've been to two of the brothers' gravesites. I picked up Samuel's Muster Rolls last year, where I discovered a "last entry" in 1864. His Confederate Pension Application is from Williamson Co., Tennessee. My query was not how to confirm his service, but to possibly find a later link for him and his family. As for a nickname, I would have though it would have seen "Sam", "Sammy" or "S.M." ... but instead I found a "John". You might want to reread my query. Thanks very much for your reply. ONE ALMOST SURE WAY TO FIND OUT THE SKINNY ON THIS ELUSIVE RELATIVE IS.....IF HE INDEED SERVED IN THE CIVIL WAR,GO TO THE ALAGENWEB,AND LOCATE HIM IN HIS COMPANY AND REGIMENT....THEN GO TO THE TENNESSEE CIVILWAR PENSION RECORDS AT THE TNGENWEB,THEN ONCE YOU HAVE MADE THE ASSERTION THAT THE INFO IS INDEED YOUR GUY, ( REMEMBER,MEN HAD- NICKNAMES TOO,JOHNNY WAS COMMON) ,GO TO THE US GOVT MILITARY ARCHIVE IN ST. LOUIS MO.,WITH NAME ,PLACE OF BIRTH, OUTFIT SERVED IN,RANK, ETC.... PAY YOUR 17.00 AND GET HIS ENTIRE MILITARY RECORD...GIVES ALL THE INFO YOU SEEK. MOST MEN WHO SERVED WANTED TO GET THIER PENSION MONEY,SO IT WILL BE EASY TO FIND HIM,UNLESS HE NEVER APPLIED FOR IT. HIS PENSION APPLICATION WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY BE IN TN. HOPE THAT WASN'T TOO LONG AS WELL ! CHUCK
I believe the best bet for obtaining Confederate records would be thru the National Archives [NARA]. The Military Records Center in St Louis would only have custody of U.S.Military Personnel Records, mostly, I believe, from WWI on, maybe later. Another source of Confederate record transcriptions might be thru the Family History Centers, etc. The Confederate Pensions was paid by the state of Tennessee. I obtained the Confederate record transcription of my Great-Grandfather from NARA. The contents depend upon what was obtained by the Federal War Department after the conflict.
